Elizabeth Kirke (morethanmagic) | 41 comments It looks like there are a lot of writers on here (both published and non). Since we have a "where do you read" topic, I thought we should have one for writing too!

I'll write anywhere I can! That said, my favorite spot is a little window nook at my parents' beach house. It's a little alcove on the second floor. I sit on a pillow with my back against one wall and put my laptop on a stool in front of me. There's just enough space to type comfortably. The best part is that the window overlooks a bay. With the window open I can hear gulls and passing fishing boats. There's nothing like writing with a nice slightly salty scented breeze and the sound of the water.

Where do you like to write?

message 2: by Sammy Goode (new)

Sammy Goode | 5380 comments Well, I write scripts--and I write in my little upstairs office. A window overlooks my back yard which backs directly onto a state park--so yeah, pretty!

message 3: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments I write at the dining room table, in front of my big window looking out at the back yard (and conveniently close to the tea kettle.) My little dog is a chewer - he loves to eat wood and fabric. So there are parts of the house he's not allowed to go unsupervised. But the dining room is the center of his domain, so when he so chooses he'll come over and ask to jump up in my lap for a cuddle and a nap.

K (k-polipetl) | 4090 comments I usually write at the kitchen table... Like Kaje my dogs don't get free run of the house and spend most of the time in there, if I try and work elsewhere in the house during the day I get whined and barked at (after all I am there purely to give them attention!)

I have the old lap top set up without internet connection so I can't get distracted, well no more than usual anyway.

(I will admit that sometimes if a bunny bites hard I have been known to write whilst at work ... my bosses can't read this can they??)

message 5: by Lori (new)

Lori Strongin | 52 comments While I can do my editing at home, I'm more creative in places where my cat isn't constantly trying to sit on my keyboard. So I'll usually hole up in a coffee house or small cafe and curl into the couch with my laptop and stay there for HOURS, typing away!

message 6: by Shawn (new)

Shawn | 2 comments It depends. In college I wrote in the lab late at night when no one was around. (Even though I had a laptop.)Now...it's either at my house late at night. (Like between 1-6 am) or at my friends coffee shop.

message 7: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments 1 and 6 am ?! Man, you would not be able to read anything I generated that late at night. You must be a real night owl.

message 8: by Summer (new)

Summer Michaels | 361 comments I usually write the best sitting on the couch with pen and paper. Staring at the blank screen is intimidating and the internet is really shiny! I get sidetracked!

Balancing tea, cookies, paper and pen as you teeter on the arm in the wake of a rampaging child - no wonder your writing has so much energy to it :)

message 11: by Haley (new)

Haley (thatwritergirl75) | 10 comments Weirdly enough, I get the most creative writing done in school. Being out of my natural environment (my house) really stimulates my creativity...That, and the fact that I may not be interested in the class. ;) When I'm at home, I like to write sitting on my bed, or on my favorite couch in our bonus room.

message 12: by Summer (new)

Summer Michaels | 361 comments Alex, my kids usually help me name my characters. They think it's "cool" to help. My four and five year old have the best imaginations. They are always running around creating new worlds for themselves. I love the energy have and envy it.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments Alex wrote: "Ten and seven. Danny's the brother, and he has dyspraxia. Amelia's 7, the weirdest little girl you'll meet but very bright."

Weird but bright girls grow up to be amazing - just saying. I'm raising two of them. They're lucky to have you for a brother.

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments Alex wrote: "Aww, thank you! They love me enough to bring me jaffa cakes. :3"

Wow, more than my brothers ever did; those are the biscuits with something like fruit jelly and chocolate, right?

message 15: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17376 comments Alex wrote: "Don't start that debate!!!!!! Basicially, they're like sponge slices with chocolate over one side and orange inbetween. Tasty.... And now the whole cake V biscuit war will start... *takes cover*"

Since we call them cookies and snack-cakes, I'm not even going there. I love Pims, which are similar but definitely cookies/biscuits. Jaffa cakes are occasionally seen in an imports section.

Byron (byft) @ Alex... (how I missed this in Jan I have no idea... )

I've heard of these things called Jaffa cakes in the UK... they are supposed to be REALLY nice...

Depends if you like dry sponge, with a blob of overly sweet orange jelly, covered on the top with dark chocolate (yep, not my favourite thing :o) )

Yum - sounds good to me :)

@ Meagan - I used to handwrite everything but it's too slow; I bet it's good for lyrics though where you give each word more thought.

Well she is a playwright already; and she is doing a short for the adult group Love is Always Write anthology. So unless she wimps out, she is going to be published. But I would definitely go along with the hug.

The tablet thing sounds good, except my ideas come when I'm driving or something else that makes typing questionable. I'm thinking about a voice recorder - can't do that in public though LOL (not even sure I can do it aloud alone in my car - hm...Might be a problem..) It sounds like your dog and mine could get together and complain about how boring mom is when that computer is on - mine sleeps in my lap, but eventually gets bored and starts cruising around looking for things to snatch that I can't just ignore.
