I've started that on my Kindle, I like it too. Was surprised at the end of that first part at how that ended.

(Which reminds me, my currently reading list is out of date!)

Erica | 77 comments Reading Shogun A Novel of Japan by James Clavell Shogun: A Novel of Japan and about to start The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller The Song of Achilles on my kindle. Just borrowed it from the library.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Read The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller last year and liked it. Not as much fighting as you'd expect and get a bit romance-y in places.

There is several authors on this one?? Can you tell the different writing styles??

Nothing wrong with liking Hugh Howey. Have you read Wool Omnibus yet?

It's been on my Kindle forever and I keep getting distracted but I will sometime soon. I have vacation coming up in June so I figure I can visit Grandma and then pretend I want to walk the city and read instead.

I think you probably can, but more from the way the story jumps about rather than from the style. I'm just past the end of the free kindle sample (10% of the book?) and have been through 3 separate threads with different, so far unrelated characters and themes.
Still it's good enough for me to shell out and buy the rest of it.

I don't want to discourage you from reading it but the first half is about Achilles and Patrokles growing up and falling in love. Even later during the war you'll get some camp romance.

Here is my review if you want more specifics, memories of books fade with time: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Dawn (caveatlector) I've had a couple friends that raved about Wool Omnibus but I'm always concerned about it because it started out as a self-pub book and I haven't had particularily good experiences with those.
So if you two could get a move on and give me your opinions...... ;)

Can't speak for Wool but his other work Sand Omnibus is great so far (though I am only 25% in). I think worse stuff has been published so I'd try it. If you want to wait, it may take a few months. :P

message 4517: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I'm in no hurry, I'm waiting to collect as many opinions as possible before I decide. I have 1000 (literally) other books on my TBR so I'm not in a rush. :D

message 4518: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I still haven't tried any Mary Renault books and will have to do so sometime. I think I have The Praise Singer in my TBR.

Jaime (goodreadsjaime_contreras) | 38 comments I am currently reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty , The Trickster by Muriel Gray and It's Only a Demon A Model of Christian Deliverance by David W Appleby . I hope to have them read within the next three weeks.

Do you ever go through and weed out stuff? I go through periodically and stuff I'm no longer interested in, I delete.

I did but its not, well not so far.

very interesting magic setup. Its very historical urban fantasy.

In my humble opinion, Wool Omnibus was great. Gave it 5 stars. I'm reading Shift right now, and it's good so far.

I just did that a couple weeks ago actually. I am down to 958 on the TBR, I think I got rid of around 100. I looked through the whole list and couldn't get rid of any more than that. :)

No way! I obviously wanted to read them at some point. The only thing keeping me from reading all of my 3,000+ books is death. And when I die, I won't know how many books I didn't get to anyways :P

message 4529: by Dawn (new)

Missy G | 16 comments I jusy finished Odin's Wolves Raven book 3, and am going to read Whale toad and back to GilesvKristian . I say this because it is my inteny although it could change....I get mixed reviews and have read mixed reviews on Whale Road. Because of the mixed reviews I will give it about 5 chapters but it is so hard when you find a story teller with talent! I truly believe that Giles Kristen will only get better and better, he isn't Bernard Cornwell but he is sharp , crisp, delightful and insightfull. so what if any thoughts on Whale Road?

message 4532: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Little do you know......you'll be somewhere in the afterlife moaning about the books you didn't get to finish. ;)

message 4533: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Of course, if we didn't spend so much time on GR's we could get more reading done!

Any thoughts on The Whale Road?? You will find some of the biggest fans of Robert Low in this group! :)

I do suggest you give it more than 5 chapters. While I really like this series it took me a bit to get into the first book. I suggest at least 125 pages for a good idea of the book and the rest of the series.

message 4536: by Dawn (last edited Apr 17, 2014 03:50PM) (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Oh wait, maybe I mean 150 pages. I just reread my review and it said "it was a solid 4 star despite the first 100 pages"

It is my shelf waiting to be read, (long sigh...) I am in the middle of The Skystone. Surprisingly good so far.

Like dawn, Missy, I recommend getting at least to halfway. I am one of the biggest fans of that series and yet I nearly gave up on The Whale Road when I first discovered it. The first 100 pages or so didn't grab me much and I found them disorienting.

I put the book aside, came back to it a long time later and tried again. Fell in love with the series after that. Very glad I gave it another chance.

Dawn (caveatlector) Hi Edward, I do like the classics too. The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells has always pissed me off though, so I refuse to read it! :)

BTW, you can link to books on GR's by using the add book/author link right above the comment box. Instead of a third party link.

Yes Dawn I just figured that out and I think I corrected it (I think), first time reading H.G.Wells; but so far my favorite author is Bernard Cornwell. Just finished up reading War Lord Chronicles-loved them, now I expect every Historical novel to be written that well. Thank you and I'm glad to be here.

Hi Edward. Welcome. :)

I felt the same way about Bernard Cornwell when I found The Last Kingdom. It woke me up. Made me realise a lot of the stuff I had been reading before was truly second rate.

Why did it p#ss you off? Curious to learn more.

message 4547: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Oh, it's the ending. I hate science fiction books where humans win by default. Really, really hate them, I want one side or the other to fight and win. Not this (view spoiler) I mean seriously, what a crappy anti-climactic ending!!

message 4549: by Sceadugenga (new)

Sceadugenga In for a penny...in for a pound, I can't get enough of this series so now I'm off to Miklagard in the company of Raven Odin's Wolves (Raven, #3) by Giles Kristian Odin's Wolves

message 4550: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) And then you'll be finished the series....what will you read next??
