A GR friend recommended
Three Six Seven by Peter Vansittart Three Six Seven then subsequently A Choice Of Murder : about Timoleon of Syracuse. The library had #2 but I bought #1. I'm always looking for stuff set in ancient Rome and Three six seven was set during the last days of Roman Britain and certainly offbeat. I'd like to read The Siege: A Novel and Lancelot. I'm enjoying Wall. Only other books I've read set during Aurelian's time are the Agent of Rome series.

Let me know what you think of Vansittart, Bryn. I'm over half finished with Wall, feel sure I'll rate it highly, but am not sure how to word a review, right now.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Jane wrote: "Let me know what you think of Vansittart, Bryn."

Shall do. I had a sudden enthusiasm as I do and bought 3 cheap secondhand.
Wall
Three Six Seven
A Safe Conduct (15thC Germany, Children's Revolt)
Not necessarily the ones I most wanted. That's Lancelot, very hard to get, and I've only found one review ("a grim figure in a grim age").

Anyhow thanks for the lead!

One GR friend has given marvellous offbeat suggestions, Bryn. With the Roman stuff, I've read the usuals and am looking for the more unusuals.

Well, I guess it's Greek and all, so it makes the right impression... I know that we have absolutely no idea as to what they were wearing at that time, at least in terms of helmets.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Hue and Cry. Read a quarter, it's nicely written, I like it. Shifting points-of-view and a bit of 16thC or Scots language, well done because you can tell by context what the words mean.

Jane | 3480 comments Started Death and the Maiden (Liebermann Papers, #6) by Frank Tallis Death and the Maiden-- fin de siecle Vienna; murder of an opera singer.
As soon as I saw the title and with my love of music I couldn't pass this one up! I'm assuming this novel has nothing to do with Franz Schubert! :)

Milo | 5 comments Just enjoyed the three new Q.V. Hunter Late Roman spy adventures, "Embers of Empire" series recommended to me by Amazon search engines who know my tastes in antiquity. I can heartily recommend.

The Veiled Assassin (Embers of Empire, #1) by Q.V. Hunter , Usurpers, a Novel of the Late Roman Empire (Embers of Empire #2) by Q.V. Hunter and The Back Gate to Hell A Novel of the Late Roman Empire by Q.V. Hunter

Now I'm reading some non-fiction on The Franks, by Edward James. Anybody know any good historical fiction about the early Franks to go with it?

Hi Milo,
Any recs may get lost in this thread. I highly recommend the 'Looking for a Book About..' folder.

It is a good place for members to ask for recommendations on more specific topics. :)

Laurentiu Lazar (laur1989) | 82 comments Tomorrow I finish The 47 Ronin Story, which I can only characterize as a very straightforward book. Like? No. Dislike? No. Good retelling of a legend.

Afterwards, I want to restartWarriorsby Jack Ludlow and continue with the 3rd installment to finish the trilogy.

Then, I'll be heading back to Ancient Rome novels. I've been a busy little bee since December last year, and I made several acquisitions:
The Boat of Fate by Keith Roberts Hardback edition in marvelous condition, received it from Canada,it took 45 days to arrive but wow... I was speechless, it looks brand new despite being published in 1971
The Three Legions by Gregory Solon I actually read the first 3 chapters and the book seems quality.
Hawk by George Green the same author that wrote Hound
Three Six Seven by Peter Vansittart

Since you read Hound at the same time as me, Bobby, it will interesting to see what you think of it in comparison to Hound.
I recall when we read Hound you thought there to be some modern language?
