Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Just finished THE ALCHEMIST and gave it four stars, but my review was very subjective. My review is on goodreads. Cannot find any way to make the title conform to policy. Sorry.

Portia Is anyone reading The Luminaries? I have the book on my TBR stack. Would it be candidate for the 1800s thread?

Certainly, if you promise to add the link for it...... :)

Portia You bet. I was on my phone when I thought of it. Here it is The Luminaries.

Portia PS Why do they call these things Smart Phones when they can't spell or post links :P

Thanks for the link here but I meant you are welcome to post this book in the Modern Age folder.

I assumed you were on a device that didn't let you add links before. Definitely something they should add to all their apps. :)

I loved this book. I'm getting ready to start the second in the series. I've been trying to finish up some other books so I can just enjoy another good Bernard Cornwell read.

So stupid that they don't have the link feature in the app. That's why I don't use it on my mobile devices.
I have the GR site bookmarked on my screen and go directly to the website avoiding that awful app all together.

You're the lucky one then lol. I've waited all this time for it to be available and now can't push myself past 150 pages. What a let down! I feel like nothings really even happened yet and the writing style is questionable.

message 3623: by Derek (new)

Derek Birks | 25 comments I know what you mean Allie. I did persevere with it and there were some nice touches but there was just too little plot for me.

Well, as Terri said, opinion seems very divided. For me it didn't get any more interesting but others absolutely love it.

I guess the good news is that they are library books, not out-of-your-pocket ones. Hope you don't feel like you've waisted too much time :(

I found it took me a little time to get into the rhythm of the writing, but once I did, I really enjoyed it.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 564 comments Two-thirds of the way through Sacred Treason, which I began because I was going on a plane and wanted a book that I wouldn't have to shut down on takeoff and landing. I'm enjoying it so much that I already bought the two sequels and have fallen way behind on Goodreads. ;-)

It's so refreshing to read a book about Elizabethan England where Henry VIII and his wives are bit players, mentioned but not featured. Even someone as Tudored-out as I am can get into a story like this one.

Oh man! I had considered buying it with an Xmas gift card but found something I liked better. Whew!

message 3634: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I was also on the dislike side for this book and I thought I would see how the ratings have stacked up for it amoung the members of this group:

5 star - 46
4 star - 30
3 star - 18
2 star - 7
1 star - 9

message 3635: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Definitely leaning towards the 'really liked it'.
But when it comes to popular books I often wonder how many 3 stars are actually two stars..
I thought the same thing when I gave The Name of the Rose 2 stars.
People can get shy about admitting they don't like a book their GR friends all like.

message 3636: by happy (last edited Nov 26, 2013 11:08PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I liked Bring Up the Bodies more than Wolf Hall. However, I don't think they were the best HF written in the last couple of yrs. Her writing style does take some getting used to.

message 3637: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments For me WH was just another Tudor in the end. And I did buy it, on what was said about it. I spent on a Henry 8 novel?? That'll teach me.

message 3638: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments The more I hear about WH the more I don't want to read it. I don't like the Tudor era really, anyway; I think it's been overdone.

@Terri, I try to be really honest in my reviews; a 2 star is actually a 2 star and I'm not afraid to give them--case in point, our favorite book of the year! :)

For those interested in Sutton Hoo, the British History Podcast just spent a couple of excellent episodes covering the dig:

He also covered the Staffordshire hoard in other fascinating programs.

Having read People's Queen, I felt the style got in the way of the content in the end - while Mantel pulled it off with Wolf Hall. I think you have to be a pretty accomplished writer to mess around with things like present tense in a novel, and People's Queen, while good, didn't quite do it for me.

message 3645: by Jane (last edited Nov 27, 2013 09:31AM) (new)

Jane | 3480 comments maybe someday I should get WH from the library, just to see what all the hullabaloo is about--absolutely no priority on this. I am planning to read one of hers on the French revolution, though.

message 3646: by Portia (new)

Portia I'm doing some clean-up this weekend, books I am half-way through and want to finish:The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry; Case Histories; The Quest of the Holy Grail. Want to have a clean slate for A&M's December reads.

Oh, and Jane? Another group I belong to is reading The Horse Goddess. Good choice!
