Just finished THE ALCHEMIST and gave it four stars, but my review was very subjective. My review is on goodreads. Cannot find any way to make the title conform to policy. Sorry.

Is anyone reading The Luminaries? I have the book on my TBR stack. Would it be candidate for the 1800s thread?
Portia wrote: "Is anyone reading The Luminaries? I have the book on my TBR stack. Would it be a candidate for the 1800s thread?"Certainly, if you promise to add the link for it...... :)

Allie, please let me know when you post your reviews(s).
Portia wrote: "You bet. I was on my phone when I thought of it. Here it is The Luminaries."Thanks for the link here but I meant you are welcome to post this book in the Modern Age folder.
I assumed you were on a device that didn't let you add links before. Definitely something they should add to all their apps. :)

Alicja wrote: "Half way through, I am in love with The Last Kingdom, I think I read more than worked today in my cubicle. I think I may be addicted!"I loved this book. I'm getting ready to start the second in the series. I've been trying to finish up some other books so I can just enjoy another good Bernard Cornwell read.

I finished it now, it is brilliant and awesome and amazing! Loved it!
Portia wrote: "PS Why do they call these things Smart Phones when they can't spell or post links :P"So stupid that they don't have the link feature in the app. That's why I don't use it on my mobile devices.
I have the GR site bookmarked on my screen and go directly to the website avoiding that awful app all together.

I don't post reviews :( but I can tell you now what I think of Wolf Hall, BLAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! So don't get what all the fuss is about.

Guess that about says it :-)

I haven't read it yet. Maybe one day....or not..

You're the lucky one then lol. I've waited all this time for it to be available and now can't push myself past 150 pages. What a let down! I feel like nothings really even happened yet and the writing style is questionable.
I know what you mean Allie. I did persevere with it and there were some nice touches but there was just too little plot for me.
Allie wrote: "So you're saying it doesn't get any better? Thanks Derek lol."Well, as Terri said, opinion seems very divided. For me it didn't get any more interesting but others absolutely love it.
Yeah, I'd only heard GREAT things about it. So disappointing. Well, I know I'm in that "other" category :)
Just started
Horses of Heaven this afternoon. Typical Bradford, but interesting time and place: Seleucid Bactria and Afghanistan.
Allie wrote: "Yeah, I'd only heard GREAT things about it. So disappointing. Well, I know I'm in that "other" category :)"I guess the good news is that they are library books, not out-of-your-pocket ones. Hope you don't feel like you've waisted too much time :(
Just posted review of The Leopard and the Cliff. Although I read the book over a year ago, here is the review:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...

I found it took me a little time to get into the rhythm of the writing, but once I did, I really enjoyed it.
Two-thirds of the way through Sacred Treason, which I began because I was going on a plane and wanted a book that I wouldn't have to shut down on takeoff and landing. I'm enjoying it so much that I already bought the two sequels and have fallen way behind on Goodreads. ;-)It's so refreshing to read a book about Elizabethan England where Henry VIII and his wives are bit players, mentioned but not featured. Even someone as Tudored-out as I am can get into a story like this one.

Oh man! I had considered buying it with an Xmas gift card but found something I liked better. Whew!
I was also on the dislike side for this book and I thought I would see how the ratings have stacked up for it amoung the members of this group:5 star - 46
4 star - 30
3 star - 18
2 star - 7
1 star - 9
Definitely leaning towards the 'really liked it'. But when it comes to popular books I often wonder how many 3 stars are actually two stars..
I thought the same thing when I gave The Name of the Rose 2 stars.
People can get shy about admitting they don't like a book their GR friends all like.
I liked Bring Up the Bodies more than Wolf Hall. However, I don't think they were the best HF written in the last couple of yrs. Her writing style does take some getting used to.
For me WH was just another Tudor in the end. And I did buy it, on what was said about it. I spent on a Henry 8 novel?? That'll teach me.
The more I hear about WH the more I don't want to read it. I don't like the Tudor era really, anyway; I think it's been overdone.@Terri, I try to be really honest in my reviews; a 2 star is actually a 2 star and I'm not afraid to give them--case in point, our favorite book of the year! :)

I liked WH well enough to recommend it to my Spouse. He finished it but had a difficult time with the voice/point of view.
Marina wrote: "I, personally, loved

I think you have to be a pretty accomplished writer to mess around with things like present tense in a novel, and People's Queen, while good, didn't quite do it for me.
maybe someday I should get WH from the library, just to see what all the hullabaloo is about--absolutely no priority on this. I am planning to read one of hers on the French revolution, though.
I'm doing some clean-up this weekend, books I am half-way through and want to finish:The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry; Case Histories; The Quest of the Holy Grail. Want to have a clean slate for A&M's December reads.Oh, and Jane? Another group I belong to is reading The Horse Goddess. Good choice!
