I will start reading the biography of Vlad the Impaler, Because it fascinates me that he became so famous through the centuries. Did anyone read it?

Started Last of the Amazons. Amazing how Pressfield has created a whole civilization! I wonder if I'll figure out why sometimes he uses Greek names for the characters, e.g., Eleuthera, and sometimes a straight English translation, e.g., Mother Bones. That's kind of a jarring note until I'll get used to it...

We had a few people read it. It was a losing book in our group read Polls last year and a couple people read it instead of reading the group read winner, and I know since then some others have read it with mixed reviews.

I prefer the real names, not the modern.

I just ordered "Petrus Romanus" from the library, also another of his books, "The Nephilim" which is not shown on GR wgich is rather strange seeing it was published in 2007.
Is this the book Anne? Nephilim Stargates: The Year 2012 and the Return of the WatchersI fixed his name (it was written as Horn, Thomas R. as opposed to how it's meant to be on GR) so it should appear more readily now.

Me too. Another writer I've enjoyed in the past and glad to hear there's a new series
The Death of Wallenstein on a historical figure in the Thirty Years' War. Play by Schiller, 1799. Free ebook version -- a great translation by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Hi Friends last of the Amazons Steve Pressfield130 pages in and enjoying this story waiting for some really rough weather to spend some cabin time while the snow falls and blows around oops forgot about my other Love All Terrain skiing and I want to be out doing that to such is life
have a relaxing weekend
cheers
Rod
Just finished Benjamin Franklin's Bastard: A Novel which I enjoyed very much. We know that Franklin had an illegitimate son that he raised with his wife Deborah but we don't know who the mother was. In this book, the author creates Annie, a young, impoverished but opportunistic girl to play that role. It was a fast, fun read with a good blend of fact and fiction.

Keep us posted on what you think of Last of the Amazons as you go, Rod.
Reading Maureen Ash's Canterbury Murders which is her newest and By Eastern Windows which was ( happily) free on Amazon when I got it..

Not yet, just adding covers or sites when they are missing.

I know I said yesterday that I was going to read
but having not liked the Roman read I just did, I have decided to veer off Roman and read something else.So I think I will get a start on the last book in Robert Low's Kingdom Trilogy.
Just started The Ides of March Wilder's "fantasia", written as a set of letters, journal entries, etc. Enjoyable so far.
Just finished The First Blast of the Trumpet (16th-century Scotland), and I'm about to start Katherine (14th-century England) for the Classic Historical Fiction group read.I've also made a start on Cecilia Holland's Varanger (Vikings in 9th-century Russia), but I haven't had time to get far with that. It looks good, though.
Jane wrote: "Let me know what you think of Varanger when you're finished, please."Happy to! I'll post here when I'm done.

C.P., did you add a review for
. I've added it to my TBR due to previous reviewers.
I can see that, even from the little I've read so far. He makes everything sound perfectly logical, plus you can see the different personalities through the letters, etc.
Bobby wrote: "C.P., did you add a review for . I've added it to my TBR due to previous reviewers."Bobby, I didn't, because I am about to interview the author, and when I do that, I don't review or rate the book. I just use the review space to post a link to the interview when it goes live.
I found this book very interesting, though, so I think it's well worth reading. It uses a lot of Scots dialect (as the characters would have), but I didn't have much trouble figuring out unfamiliar words from their context.
finished
The Ides of April - meh, The mystery was okay, but I really didn't connect with Albia. I think she is trying too hard to recapture Falco of the early novels. 3+ starsI will read the follow up when it is released
I'll post a more complete review later
Gates of Fire Your reviews have inspired me. Picked it up at the library on my way home from work & will start tonight or tomorrow.
