Just finished Sarah Hawkswood's latest Medieval Mystery (aka Bradcote and Catchpoll Mysteries) - ninth in the series.
Good one, Liam! I'm reading "Hammer of Rome", and I'm quite disappointed that it's the last in the series.
I love it, Liam! This author has now been promoted to my Favorite Author List. He's similar to Bernard Cornwell.
Ill need to read some of his books, i love that era like i said, conn igguldens rome series got me into it. I was always put of WOt because of the size and theres alot of hate towards it.

"I love the series, and finished Wolf at the Door last weekend. Found it a bit bloodthirsty, but otherwise the same good characterisation and humour I´m used from the main persons.
Liam wrote: "...I was always put of WOt because of the size and theres alot of hate towards it."I think that's due to the middle-ish books of the series. There is a fair bit of filler contained within them. But when the author was dying, he pulled in Brandon Sanderson for the last three books. He gave detailed instructions for every arc of the story, which by this time had become quite immense, and how things were to wrap up. I'm not a fan of Sanderson, but I've got to say that he did a good job in carrying out Robert Jordan's wishes.
I just finished “Portrait of a Spy” by Daniel Silva. He is one of my favorite writers; gee, can he ever write! Next up is “The First Man in Rome” by Colleen McCullough. I think I’m one of the last to read her. I was put off by that other novel of hers, the one that takes place in Australia that features the love story that involves a priest. Can’t think of the name right now but it really put me off .
Oh my gosh. I finished Hammer of Rome: Gaius Valerius Verrens 9, and now I am at a loss. I'm afraid to start another book about ancient Rome right away, because what if I unfairly compare it to this outstanding series? I know me, and I'd be comparing away. Maybe I'll re-read another Michael J. Sullivan fantasy as a palate cleanser. I want to start a new-to-me Ben Kane story, but I've never read him before and I want to give him a fair shake. Maybe after the fantasy book I'll try it.
Just finished Bernard Cornwell's War Lord. Always love the protagonist, Uhtred of Bebbanburg.Continue with Lee Child's Blue Moon and Valerio Manfreddi's Odyssey.
Bought few books of Robert Fabbri, Simon Scarrow and Robyn Young. September and Oxtober will be excited months!
Any suggestions from you all regarding Robert Fabbri's books? Thanks a lot
I´d be interested to hear about Fabbri too, because I downloaded some books by him that were on sale recently.
I'm reading Cecilia Hollands' Corban Loosestrife series. Just finished the first book The Soul Thief. Quite enthralling.
I am unfamiliar with this part of Roman history; there is a plethora of Latin names; and reading through Wikipedia cuts through the quick. But I’ll stick thru it yet. There are also a lot of distractions; Afghanistan; the race for the baseball World Series; the start of the football season…
I'm re-reading, "Caesar", by Colleen McCullough.. I've read pretty near all of her Master's of Rome series, and they are top notch historical fiction at it's finest, meticulous in detail with plenty of maps. Caesar

I've recently finished 3 medieval mysteries - 2 by Paul Doherty ( the latest Hugh Corbett mysteries and the latest Jack Blackjack mystery by Michael Jecks
All are good way to kill some time. All are bit formulaic, but I really don't mind - the mysteries are good. The Doherty's have a bit more convoluted plot and are set in the early stages of Edward II reign. The Jack Blackjack is set during the reign of Mary I ( Henry VIII daughter)
Also currently reading the second volume of Nathan Makaryk's Robin Hood series. (view spoiler)

I’m back to Suzanna Gregory: A KILLER IN THE WINTER. I am continually engaged by Matt Bartholomew & Brother Michael!!
I'm all caught up on the Matt Bartholomew series - it is one of my favorites. I wish she would release another one :)
I tried several things of late, (The Man With Two Names, Birth of the 10th Legion, and Caligula), but nothing seems to hit my Enjoyment Bone quite like the Gaius Valerius Verrens series. So I went back to one of my favorite fantasy books: Nyphron Rising.
I just finished book 8 of Lindsey Davis's Flavia Albia Roman Mystery series.
Not bad - solid 4 stars I think. When I read the first one, I got the impression she was trying too hard to recapture the light/fun feeling of the first Falco mysteries and wasn't too impressed. I think Ms Davis has found her stride again and this really was a fun read. I think I'll have to go back and read some of the other entries in the series.

I'm currently starting Ragtime. Having seen the musical at the USF this past month, I want to go back and see just how much of the novel was cut out. It's been almost 50 yrs since I read it and about all I remember is the Stanford White/Elizabeth Nesbit scandal (which actually happened)
Michelle wrote: "I finished a great book last night: Wounds of Honour, and started the sequel directly after."Thanks, Michelle, for reminding me that I have this book on my Kindle. Your recommendation encourages me to read it next!
I just finished Arrows of Fury, the sequel to Wounds of Honour, and I really enjoyed it. I bought the third book, which I'll start within the next few days. I had a hold at my library for a fantasy work, The Blacktongue Thief, and it is now on my kindle. I need to read that first!
Marilyn wrote: "Finished THE GRASS CROWN #2 by Colleen McCullough. On to FORTUNE’S FAVORITES #3 Yep, I’m hooked!"Glad your enjoying the series, they just keep getting better and better.
Oh, yes! To say nothing about the education I’m getting. I knew about Julius Caesar, et al., but not about Sulla or Gaius Marius. This series is very enjoyable. Did I miss knowing about the last two because I never got to finish my last two years of college?
Other Paul Doherty fans here ? Started The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series a couple of weeks ago and now tackling book 10 The House of Shadows. Really "good reads" !
Christopher wrote: "I just started The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller earlier today. Only a few chapters in but definitely enjoying it so far..."I read "The Song of Achilles" years ago and loved it.
Terri wrote: "I'm currently reading My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin. This is a reread for me. I love this book.
My Brilliant Career"
Anita wrote: "Other Paul Doherty fans here ? Started The Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series a couple of weeks ago and now tackling book 10 The House of Shadows. Really "good reads" !"Oh, yeah!!!! I just barely finished the latest two in his Hugh Corbett series and just got the latest Bro Athelstan - it will have to wait till I get a couple of other books read :)
I finished The Blacktongue Thief last night which was hysterical, although definitely not to everyone's taste. And I started the third in the Empire series, Arrows of Fury. I'm worried about what will happen in this book, because I became upset with something in particular that happened fairly quickly! I've grown attached to these characters.
I finished Ragtime this past week. I read it when it first came out, but I didn't really remember much of it, just that there were actual historical figures in it - Evelyn Nesbit (the first IT girl), Harry Houdini, JP Morgan among others. Since I saw the musical at the USF this past month, I decided I wanted to reread it and see just what they cut for the musical. The book has three main plot lines - the story of a white upper middle class family living in New Rochelle, NY, a black ragtime pianist and a poor Jewish Immigrant from what would become the Soviet Union and there interactions. While telling the story many real historical people float in and out of the story, driving the actions of the historical figures. The two main Real Life characters are Evelyn Nesbit, who the brother of the Mother falls for and Emma Goldman- the anarchist, who also influences Brother.
The musical pares the story that of Coalhouse Walker, a black ragtime pianist and his interactions with white upper middle class family in New Rochelle NY and the racism that was endemic in society of the time and what it drives him to.
The book is a definate 4+ star read, if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.
Currently reading the first of Douglas Jackson's Hero of Rome series
It's been a while since I've read any Roman era fiction, and I am really enjoying it.
I finished The Eagle's Vengeance last night which was immensely enjoyable! Though this series isn't perfect, the author spins a good yarn. I bought the next in the series, but I'm re-reading one of my favorite series by Janny Wurts at the same time, starting with The Curse of the Mistwraith. This book is 850 pages long, so it will take me a bit to finish before I get to the next in Anthony Riches' series.
currently reading Gates of Athens by Conn Iggulden and fairly non plussed with lack of action, adventure, excitement..... think you get the picture.... others have done the period far better for me.
I read the second book in the series about the wives of Henry VIII. by Alison Weir, Anne Boleyn: A King's Obsession. Started better than the first, then dragged and ended quite sudden. Okay, but I don´t think I will continue the series.
I finished Hero of Rome - I really, really enjoyed it. It is the story of Bodiccea's rebellion and really sucked me in. I will definetely continue with the series. In fact I downloaded the next two to my Nook :)Currently reading Paul Doherty's latest Bro Athelstan
