Eileen Iciek | 553 comments It isn't fiction, but I'm reading Road to Manzikert Byzantine and Islamic Warfare 527-1071 by Brian Todd Carey about what led up to the battle of Manzikert in 1071. A lot of useful information in it, but the writing is not riveting.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Finished Aitcheson's Knights of the Hawk

Pretty good solid 4 stars, the series covers an era not often written about - the post Hastings subduing of England by the Normans.

I'm not sure what of my next read either Harry Sidebottom's

Blood and Steel (Throne of the Caesars, #2) by Harry Sidebottom

The second volume in his series on 3rd century Rome

or

Shakespeare and the Countess The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe by Chris Laoutaris a Non fiction look at creation of the Globe Theater.

If you do read Blood and Steel I think you'll enjoy it.

Histolicious Histolicious I finished Song of Princes (Homeric Chronicles, #1) by Janell Rhiannon it was ... okay. I love Troy, but this book just wanted to much, in to little time/pages.

I started The Plague Charmer by Karen Maitland

message 7409: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I decided my next read would be Blood and Steel

It's been excellent so far. The story is mid third century Rome and the attempt of the Gordians to take the throne.

Started a new HF series.... Charles Lenox Mysteries by Charles Finch A Beautiful Blue Death (Charles Lenox Mysteries, #1) by Charles Finch . Not far at all but it's a very easy read so far. Perfect for summer reading :)

I finished Blood and Steel.

Very good read, definite 4 stars. It's the story of the Gordian's, father and son, attempt to depose Maximus Thrax as emperor. It all takes place in about 2 or 3 weeks in 238 AD.

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I'm reading The Passage which I'm enjoying. For a vampire book, its not really a vampire book (really). This might be why I'm enjoying it so much.

What a good idea! I'm sure they'll love it!

I loved The Plague.

Paul Burnette | 57 comments Alice wrote: "I'm currently reading Watership Down (I know, it's not historical fiction), and am enjoying it very much."

Adams' Watership Down is a fictional comment on Nazi-ism in conflict with more democratic government, I think. But more than that, it is a wonderful story with captivating characters facing challenges to survival and incredible conflict. Powerful, evocative, and true in the best sense of 'true'!

I liked Outlander so much more than I ever thought I would. I'm now on a used book store quest for the next one. I just don't think it's a book I can read in the time the library allows me.

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I'm a third of the way through reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Its about 200 years ago, slave trading, the situation is dire, and I'm disgusted by the way we humans can have so little regard for each other's worth.

message 7436: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader I have just finished And Less Than Kind (Doubled Edge, #4) by Mercedes Lackey

It may not exactly fit the group criteria, since it is a very, very fictionised version of Tudor story with Sidhe mixing themselves up in the affairs of England. Still, my review, if interested;

I finished Shakespeare and the Countess: The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe.

Not bad, but the title is a bit of a misnomer - Shakespeare and the Globe don't appear until the book is about 2/3rds done. This is really a biography of Elizabeth Russell - the self-styled Dowager Countess of Beford. According the practices of the English Nobility, she really wasn't.

I found it to be a weak 4 star read and a little dry in spots

My thoughts if anyone is intrested.
