Gretchen (eab2012) I just added Roseblood to my tbr along with a few other Paul Doherty novels. I can't figure out why that list isn't getting shorter.

message 5252: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I can't figure out how mine got over 1000 again either! :)

I've tried four of Paul Doherty's series and I find he's a really solid 3 star author for me.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Paul Doherty really is a dependable author. Occasionally you get 4 star reads, but you know that we will get a good, reliably entertaining 3 star read.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments To be honest I got because, I want a sense of her writing because I was more interested in The Table of Less Valued Knights by Marie Phillips The Table of Less Valued Knights released this week. I got both and expect the knight one to be hilarious.

Diego (gambitox) | 71 comments I just started Warlock A Novel of Ancient Egypt by Wilbur Smith Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt...I hope this one is better than it's predecessors.

I mean, they were good books, but this is my 5th Wilbur, and I always have a little trouble finishing them - I've drop them all by the middle, then I grab them up again after reading around 10 different books -. Except for the last one, Monsoon (Courtney #10) by Wilbur Smith Monsoon. What a great read this was from the first page. But before continuing the Courtney's Saga, I think I'm gonna give another try at the Egyptian Series.

Diego, I read it some time ago and it was a library book, but I remember it as appalling - and I liked River God. This one shouldn't be the second one in the series, maybe the third? and I really think that if the author wasn't so famous it would have been cause of laugh, or horror, or both at the publishing house.
I really hope to be remembering badly.

I just put that on my wish/TBR list. My daily Off the Shelf email did a review on it and it looks hilarious. Can't wait to read. Please let me know how it goes.

That bad?? :( hmmmm...Oh well, I'm still giving it a shot. I found this one along with the 4th in the series, they were both on the used books shelf at my local bookshop, so I have to read them both.

Must finish...all books on my shelf...or I'll start...brbrbrzzz...malfunctioning =P

Hey, If I could finish the abominable The Lost Symbol, I think I could go through this one...

It's interesting, especially the way it is written (it's alt-history fic). My review ==> https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I'm about 100 pages into The Whale Road (Oathsworn, #1) by Robert Low by Robert Low
I looked at a quiz on Goodreads about the book and spoiled it for myself :(

I abandoned it. There was some important character background that didn't make sense to me from a Jewish perspective.

message 5285: by Alicja (new)

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 657 comments Just finished House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds , OMG that was awesome!

I am also finishing up The House of the Vestals (Roma Sub Rosa, #6) by Steven Saylor .

The Rise and the Fall of the Sacred Band of Thebes by G.A. Hauser is awful. The author has no understanding of ancient Greek culture at all. And the awful thing is most of the story so far revolves around that misunderstanding.

Time's Eye (A Time Odyssey, #1) by Arthur C. Clarke is cool so far. Its like Alexander the Great v. Mongols v. British in India (like Sharpe) v. prehistoric humans v. science fiction time travel battle royale. Off to a good start...

message 5286: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 55 comments I am currently reading Antidote to Murder, the second book in the Dody McCleland series by Felicity Young. It takes place in London in 1911. Dody is physician who works part time at women's clinic for the poor. One of her patients was found dead of a botched abortion and Dody is accused of being the abortionist. Dody is in favor of birth control, but opposed to abortion. She must find out the identity of the abortionist responsible. In a separate plot line, Mata Hari is also a character in this book. This is a real page turner.

message 5287: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I had to take a break from The Archer's Tale. I keep hoping it's going to pick up and it's not. I started reading A Flower for the Queen. It's a book about botany during the Age of Discovery. It has some great characters like Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks. I don't really know a ton about botany (despite my biologist mother's desperate attempts in my youth) but I am finding it to be an interesting book so far.

Yes, but not this particular book. The author frames ancient Greek morals and society through a 21st century lens and has no real understanding. Its disappointing.

Wow, I'm impressed. I have never been able to read more than one book at a time :)

I finally finished my NON FICTION read on the Tudors

Tudor The Family Story by Leanda de Lisle

The family relationships are emphized more that the politics. De Lisle does a good job of telling the story on Henry VIII's sisters, Mary and Margret, who both married Kings (France and Scotland).

Currently reading another NON FICTION book on the War of 1812

1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman

I usually have a history...recent fiction and maybe a Stephen Kingish going.

I've been known to go on book binges, Dawn. Where all I read are books on a particular subject.
