Derek Birks | 25 comments I must admit that when I started Dissolution I did find it slow, but once I got into the characters I was hooked and enjoyed all the subsequent books in the series.

Shomeret | 55 comments I sometimes pick up series when the most recent book calls itself to my attention. I started reading the series with Revelationbecause the case sounded very interesting. Then I looked for another book that sounded interesting and went back to Dark Fire. Then Heartstonewas released and I read that next. By then, I felt very invested in the characters, but wanted to know more about their history. So I finally read Dissolution quite recently and wasn't the least bit bored. My strategy of reading out of order may not work for everyone, but it works for me. I still haven't read Sovereign or Lamentation.

Andy | 1510 comments Glad you're giving it another go Darcy, really enjoyed it & loved the characters. Dark fire was very good too imo

Derek Birks | 25 comments Lamentation not yet out, I think... Looking forward to it.

Tedious is a good way to put it, I think. That's kind of how I felt when I read Dissolution but the next four books in the series were excellent. I'm going to be sad when I finish the fifth since there's no release date yet in the States for the sixth.

message 5156: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I'm continuing on with the Ursula Blanchard novels and To Ruin A Queen. I'm quickly becoming annoyed with Ursula but the story and the atmosphere keeps me entertained. I don't know how quickly I am going to press through the next eight books. I'm waiting on the next few Steven Saylor Roma Sub Rosa books from my library.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I really enjoyed that series
I wish she would write more of them

message 5159: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I think it's a great series too. A unusual time period and subject.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Tonight I intend to finish the last 60 or so pages of Dissolution and then start on Ironfire. This along with August's group read, will knock off another three from our Listopia ;)

Dawn (caveatlector) Started a couple more. Nothing like ILL's to spur a person onto read fast, especially when they take 4 months to show up, you have 2 weeks to read them and you get 7 at the same time!! :)

If you're like me you may start some that in your opinion may turn out to be 'dogs' then that would cut down your pile. :)

BTW, I just started [book:No One Sleeps in Alexandria|21138275] No One Sleeps in Alexandria by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid by Ibrahim Abdel Meguid: how WWII affects Alexandria, Egypt and it tells of the friendship between a Muslim man and a Coptic man. It promises to be interesting, once I get used to the names.

message 5164: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have had very few of those lately but the first of my ILL's was dead boring so I quit and took it back.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Push Not the River by James Conroyd Martin. I thought it would be a read on Polish history, but it is leaning toward a bodice ripper (perhaps a little bust duster to boot). I won't condemn the author just yet as I am only a few pages into the book. How do male authors write about the sensitivities of young virgins? How do they know and understand about such deep, inner feelings that women have? That they do is a mystery to me.

message 5171: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) The five year old is on vacation with grandma and grandpa for the next ten days and I have a stack of books to get through while double trouble naps. They include finishing The Autobiography of Henry VIII with Notes by His Fool, Will Somers, Queen of Ambition, and The Queen's Handmaid. Once those are finished I hope to get through Sisters of Treason,The Seven Wonders, and Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman. I have the August group reads on hold at my library. Just waiting for them to come in! I'm feeling ambitious!

message 5172: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I have a nice long weekend coming up so am also feeling ambitious. I have a stack by my chair already and am making a trip to the library this afternoon.

I've started Ramses The Eternal Temple (Ramses, #2) by Christian Jacq Ramses: The Eternal Temple by Christian Jacq

Jane | 3480 comments This cover from the Marius Mules series is great--statue, but of Vercingetorix: Marius' Mules Prelude to War by S.J.A. Turney Marius' Mules: Prelude to War. This one makes sense in the context: Caesar vs Vercingetorix. The other is Hercules: what has he to do with the story?

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I just started Leanda De Lisle's history of the Tudors - NON FICTION

Tudor The Family Story by Leanda de Lisle

So far it's been very readable. She starts the story much earlier than most histories of the Tudors, with Henry VII's grandfather, who although a poor commoner, married a queen - Henry V's widow Catherine.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I hadn't heard of the book until I learned about the movie. Thought I'd best read the book. :)

message 5194: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I'm running out of time! My daughter is only on vacation for three more days and I've only finished one book. In my defense, I spent most of this afternoon rummaging through a used book store enjoying various tea samples. I only brought home three more books to add to my tbr list. I finished Queen of Ambition and I'm going to try really hard to finish The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers. That book is proving to be some kind of Everest for me. Ugh.

I'm jealous. Your afternoon sounds lovely. Much better than mine anyway. I had to call the cops on my loud, rude, crazy neighbors.

message 5199: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I had those neighbors once. They also didn't believe in paying to have their garbage collected and it tended to end up all over my lawn.
