Stephen Atropos is one of the three fates, specifically the one responsible for cutting the thread of life. I know that this book starts with Hornblower aiding in the funeral for Horatio Nelson but other than that it's one of the least deadly voyages of Hornblower's valiant career.

I'm wondering if there was a hidden meaning in the name of the ship that I've just been too dense to understand.

Stephen Bump? Does no one have any insights they'd like to share?

Michael Alford I honestly had never thought about the name of the ship until just now.
