It's good to know that those of us intelligent enough to read understand that this "epidemic" is riduculous and wasteful.

If I see one more or hear one more comment I might scream. I don't even watch the news!

At work today they posted tons of signs all over the place telling people how to wash their hands and what to do if they feel sick. I am going to find a plastic pig snout to buy this weekend and wear it to work monday, then I'll tell them I think I have symptoms of the swine flu!

LOL. Better be careful, Emilee. You might find yourself whisked away in an ambulance before you know what hit you.

As long as I have a book!

message 104: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) And people should be practicing proper hygiene all the time! If people always coughed and sneezed into their elbows, disposed of tissue properly, kept their hands off their faces, washed their hands frequently and wiped down their phones, keyboards and doorknobs, the spread of all kinds of contagious illnesses would be drastically cut. My 8 year old knows to do these things. I can't even begin to tell you the amount of times I've seen adults picking their noses on public transportation and not wash their hands after using a public bathroom. I've seen dirty tissues lying in grocery carts and telephones that are visibly dirty.

message 105: by [deleted user] (new)

Beth I agree. At my work the Manger of the office doesn't wash her hands and she has to meet people and shake hands with people. Gross!

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, so the highschool has called everyday this week to tell us how to handle the symptoms of swine flu. Getting a little old.

message 107: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) Seriously! It's all common sense! When I used to work, our boss (who is a Dr.) had the nasty habit of not washing his hands after using the bathroom. I got this bit of information from a very reliable male source! Jacob's school has sent home two notes this week about what we should do and what they will do in the event that there's a "probable" or "confirmed" case. Sometimes I just have to roll my eyes!

message 108: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) I haven't been active in the group yet but remedying that.

Fiona sorry to hear about your uncle but it is good to know he had a full life. We all want that in the end don't we?

I have been on a downturn in reading until today. Finally got it back. We are expecting thunderstorms all weekend so it'll be a good time for reading....

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

Sharon we are glad to ha ve you. Rain and thunderstorms are great for reading. I like when the power goes out then I can read by candle and lantern light. Thus the reason I wear glasses.

message 110: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Emilee wrote: "Rain and thunderstorms are great for reading. I like when the power goes out then I can read by candle and lantern light. ..."

You'd like it here in the rainforest then. Power outtages almost every single day here. Sometimes more than once. Oh, and plenty of thunderstorms as I live in an area known as 'lightning alley'. :-D

message 111: by [deleted user] (new)

That would be so pleasant then I could get so much reading done.

Very interesting "lightning alley".

message 112: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Its an area that extends about 60-80 miles that cuts down between various islands and generates a lot of lightning with and without thunder or rain.

The power outtages here are terrible. They come in the morning when you were just about to have your shower and current is off for an hour or two ('load-shedding') or mid-morning when you were working hard on your computer ('routine maintenance') or mid-afternoon (some building contractor cut through a power line) or evening just as American Idol comes on ('weight of vines growing on power lines') or just all through the night in the rain so no-one is going to fix it till morning. If only I could afford a generator....

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay I wouldn't like my shower to be interrupted.

message 114: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) Oh okay I would be way frustrated with that many power outages! How off that there is and isn't rain. I have never been around lightening unless it was a rain storm.

I did get a lot of reading done yesterday it was a fabulous day to just curl up! Hoping to get to do that more this week. I live with my folks though and do the house and yard and mom many weeks can come up with quite a list and I am on this thing of working out alot at the Y across the street. Still I will be very efficient with all my "duties" this week as I have Berg's and Picoult's new books in transit at the library!

We just finished once a month power outage. This one lasted two days. It was by far the worst I've experienced 90 degree heat, no fans, no breeze, no water and to top it off a SAND STORM! So I am busy cleaning up after this. I find the easiest more fun way to clean after a sand storm is flooding the floors (the house is all tile) It makes for a nice wet break.

But power outages aren't all bad, As my husband says "candle light makes everything more beautiful and romantic, or any spooky book more spookier"

message 116: by [deleted user] (new)

A two day power outage might be a little okay a lot frustrating. I would be forced to eat all the ice cream in my freezer.

message 117: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) ROFLMAO

I actually did that! not that there was a lot left. but still it was nice to have an excuse to eat it all.lol

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

Any excuse for Icecream is good!

message 120: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) I love ice cream! I am on a big diet though but I did find one Skinny Cow that is both good and not too fattening!

For Mother's Day (I live with my folks) I am grilling mom a pork loin and making her favorite lemon meringue pie. Got her a nice little gift from Amazon did my shopping from home this year!

Oh I bought a Nintendo DS and Brain Age and a Crosswords game. I am loving it! That is my mom's day to myself! Strange enough I didn't buy a book. Probably because of the staggering stack I already have and have promised myself to read...

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

I love ice cream too but I so have to have the sugar!

Is Brain Age fun. We've been thinking about getting that.

message 122: by [deleted user] (new)

I use too many cliches and too much slang. I so need to work on getting the cliches and slang out of my everyday verbage.

message 123: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) The last two reviews I wrote (Nim Chimpsky and The Last Night I Spent With You) are notable for the large number of cliches I wrote. Really really bad writing. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd edit them.

message 124: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all mums xx

message 125: by [deleted user] (new)

Petra: I think sometimes it is just easier to use the cliches. I really need to work on it myself.

message 126: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) Brain Age is fun you should try it! I like crosswords too. And I am going to get a game called Curious something where you have brainteasers to get the guy to his mission or something!

Sorry I haven't been around. It looks like it has been slow anyway though.

Today is my first day to quit smoking. Wish me luck. I am on the patch and zyban so should be good to go. I am already exercising every day and have just lost 40 pounds so I thought you know doing all that and still smoking sheesh how dumb.

I am temping today and will be the only one in the office so taking Fiorina's book to finish and a cozy read. I won't get to read much this weekend as my daughter and two friends are coming in...

message 127: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Sharon, good luck. Both my husband and I quit smoking. It has lasted. Some say a hard candy to suck on once a day after dinner helps. Whatever, our first time quitting was the magic one. Will be rooting hard for you. Now, please root for me to lose 10 pounds.

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

Good luck Sharon. You can do it! When YOu crave a cig just grab a book!

message 129: by [deleted user] (new)

Sharon it sounds like Sandra will be a great help! A support is more like it.

message 130: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Sharon, after a few weeks foods will taste better, smell better, your clothes and hair will smell better.
You will be healthier.

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy Memorial DAy Everyone!

message 132: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I don't know what Memorial Day is (other than its a holiday). In the UK its May Bank Holiday and I don't know what that's for either, but happy bank hols to everyone in the US and UK.

message 133: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Memorial Day in the US is in honor of war veterans who died in service of country. People often put flowers on graves of loved ones. It is also the day summer activities like pool and lake openings may take place.

I don't know what Bank Holiday is or Boxing Day, either.

message 134: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Sandra wrote: "I don't know what Bank Holiday is or Boxing Day, either."

A Bank Holiday is exactly what it says, the banks close, it is a public holiday for everyone. (Of course all the big stores open and have sales!) There isn't a Memorial Day in the UK, but there is a Poppy Day or Remembrance Sunday held through the British Commonwealth and that is more or less the same thing except its not a holiday.

I knew that the US didn't celebrate Boxing Day, but because of the the number of sales advertised on the tv, I thought it must be something familiar. To quote from Wikipedia,

"Boxing Day is a bank holiday or a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and countries in the Commonwealth of Nations with a mainly Christian population. Though not officially recognized in the United States, the name is still known there (particularly in areas near Canada). It is based on the tradition of giving gifts (a "Christmas box") to the less fortunate members of society" on the day after Christmas.

message 135: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Thank you, Petra. It was nice of you to take the time to explain them.

message 136: by Sandra (last edited May 25, 2009 06:13PM) (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Sharon, how is it going with the stopping of smoking?
The first week I think is the hardest. Rooting for you to succeed.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy Bank Day to those in the UK! I guess it would be over now but it is always nice to have another day off.

message 138: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) Thanks for all your support! Sandra it is going great now I know I have not completely quit cause I am on the patch but I think it will work cause I'll lose the habit and that has been really hard to overcome. My mind just keeps saying now we smoke (after doing things you know). Working well though and I intend to be on the lowest dose of the patch by next Friday...

You guys are great!

Took my daughter and her friends to see Angels and Demons good movie. We did a lot of running around and I stayed busy today too getting the house back in order. Tomorrow I will get back to the gym then going ot a baseball game so that will keep me busy then. One day at a time! I did get some reading in to boot!

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

Sharon: You are doing great. Keep it up!

message 140: by Terra Timmons (new)

Terra Timmons Hey peeps! I am here. I know I have been gone a little while, but so much has been going on in my life. Hopefully I can be here more often. Even though I've been busy with life, I still haven't stopped reading! :-)

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad you didn't leave!

message 142: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Hi Sharon, how is it going? Wishing you smooth sailing.

Hello, what is new with everyone? It's good to be out of the paperwork blizzard and back to fun things.

message 143: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just wanted to let my RISI friends know today is my 1st wedding anniversary to my beloved husband. We are planning on going out for a meal 2morrow nite while the children are at their grandparents overnight.

Today, we are taking them to our local theme park lol.

Have a good day x

Kipahni | 45 comments I agree, Richard a whole day in bed is the most wonderful way to replenish.

However I find if I do it two days in a row I swing the opposite and slip into an abyss of lethergy

message 145: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune)
Richard, for years my life was run by my job jar. It seldom gave me time off between teaching, being a wife and mother and other activities. Finally I discovered my job jar was there to serve me and I could throw it in the trash sometimes. Since then I try to listen to my body as it tells me what it needs. I kept shushing it resulting in stress build up. Glad to hear your whole day in bed made a difference in your wellbeing. Good for you.

message 146: by Kipahni (new)

Kipahni | 45 comments yay for the healing power of rest. i know that when my nerves are on end it is usually because of the lack of just dwelling.

message 147: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Meditation - does anyone else here besides Richard and I do it?

message 148: by [deleted user] (new)

Richard: Bed for an entire day actually sounds very refreshing. I might actually try to take your suggestion.

message 149: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy anniversary Fiona!

message 150: by [deleted user] (new)

When I use to do yoga every day I felt new and refreshed. I should really start doing yoga again.
