With running 3 kids all over I like the quick 15-30 minute meals. Granted i love to cook and wish i had more time. Sunday i usually make a big yummy meal that takes a few hours to cook. But very excited that it is getting warmer out because I can BBQ. Summer is much easier.

message 52: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) We love BBQ too. We grill almost everything!

message 62: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) Good Morning! April is a beautiful month here. Our flowering trees are either in bloom or starting, the spring bulbs are still blooming and the new spring green leaves on trees not far from showing color. We are learning to call dandelions golden pennies so we don't have to use chemicals on our lawns. Right now we have a great riches in dandelions. Cheerful bits of yellow.

message 63: by [deleted user] (new)

I love spring. All the flowers blooming the trees blossoming. My Daffils & iris are up the tulips aren't up all the way but I'm sure they will be over the weekend.

My favourite meal is brown rice, mung beans, lentils, Brussels sprouts and chestnuts seasoned with soy sauce, some garlic and a little very fierce Scotch bonnet pepper sauce. Sometimes I cook the brown rice in coconut milk and add pumpkin.

I'm not a vegetarian. I just like veg food a lot.

message 73: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Happy Birthday Fiona Q. I hope this is your best year yet but not the best to be.

I used to make my own coconut milk as I have loads of fallen coconuts in the garden, but I either buy it in a can or make it from dessicated coconut. All the grating of the fresh coconut was too much effort. http://www.coconut-connections.com/co... tells you how to make it. Only takes a couple of minutes.

The best pumpkin rice is white rice cooked in coconut milk with chunks of orange pumpkin added about 15 mins before its cooked, or less if you like it firm. Add some nutmeg and brown sugar....

Or miss out the nutmeg and brown sugar and cook it with fried onions and hot pepper sauce, you can add pigeon peas or even petit pois, or anything else for that matter.

message 81: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) For my b/day I received the following books:

10 Reasons Not to Fall in Love - Linda Green.

Whiskey Sour - J. A Konarth

Sepulchre - Kate Mosse

Sundays At Tiffanys - James Patterson

The Vows of Silence - Susan Hill

Whispers of the Dead - Simon Beckett

Keeping the Dead - Tess Gerritsen

Terra Timmons Has anyone read, The Red Tent?

I just got it from a friend. Just curious on your thoughts.

message 86: by Kipahni (new)

Kipahni | 45 comments I have read the Red Tent a long time ago. It's good historical fiction. I don't know how accurate she is and how much she made up but I still enjoyed it

Thanks Kipahni! I'm always open for new reads. This on eis on my list, among others.

message 88: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Terra that's what I thought about "The Red Tent":
Diamant has created a wonderful story about the women of biblical times, our fore-mothers Rebecca, Sarah, Rachel, and Leah, from Dinah's point of view. Although I was eager to read this book, I didn't expect it to have such an impact on me, nor did I expect to love it as much as I did. Highly recommended. It is especially gratifying to find a sympathetic, detailed, and believable account of an Old Testament woman's life set in this era and part of the world. The book was a pleasure for even this non-religious feminist to read. The images are riveting. The characters are memorable. I wish I were a screenwriter because the Red Tent would make a wonderful movie.

message 89: by [deleted user] (new)

It sounds really good. I bought it and just need to read it.

message 90: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Enjoy the book both Terra and Emilee

message 91: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) A long time ago it was read by our in person book discussion group and thoroughly enjoyed by all of various faiths as well as those not of any faith.
Vivid, Amazing way of bonding in those days. Almost felt envious.

message 92: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (sharon2020) I am going to have to read it. Have thought to several times but kept being unsure. It sounds like a good one though from what you all say.

I am reading bios of presidents right now. Reading Truman by David McCullough and it is a huge one but great reading! I am kind of on a non fiction thing right now as over the years I have bought so many and not read them going with fiction instead. I am also going to read TS Eliot's poems I think....Sharon

message 93: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Just starting Nim Chimpsky by Elizabeth Hess. I like animal behaviour books.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

If I hear anymore about the Swine Flu I put on a set of ear muffs. Dang it's the flu. Deal with it!

message 95: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) I know what you mean, Emilee. People need to put this in perspective. The experts are saying that 30,000 Americans die from the seasonal flu every year, and do you hear about that every five minutes on TV? People are going on about this like it's the black plague!

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

Beth: your totally right. They don't ever advertise that the death rate from seasonal flu. Apparently some countries currently are recommending that people have food and other supplies at hand if the outbreak gets really bad! It's not like the black plague! Chill!

message 97: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) Someone told me that those vaccines actually killed some people. I also think that those masks people are wearing aren't very effective and give people a false sense of "security."

message 98: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sanddune) From what I heard last night on the news the warmer weather is about to cause the end of already dwindling epidemic. And that in the US cases were mild with one or two exceptions. Apparently the seeming rise in cases is in the delayed reporting of same. Als0 let's leave the pigs alone; they have no part in causing this disease outbreak. At my age I see these scares come and go. Healthy well nourished people have a tremendous resistance to illness. I found this out living in Brazil during which time 50 a day were dying of meningitis. This was not much of a threat to the well-nourished healthy. I rode public transit every day. It hit the poor and those living in unhygenic conditions. Take the doctors and the nurses, how is it they manage to treat ill patients all day long and stay remarkably well as a rule?

message 99: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) I think the media are realizing that they were the primary cause of the "epidemic" by their riduculous coverage of an insignificant outbreak in the grand scheme of global illnesses. That's why we now see very little coverage of the actual "epidemic" and a ridculous number of articles about not blaming the poor pigs for the disease.

Tom (tommyro) Dan wrote: "I think the media are realizing that they were the primary cause of the "epidemic" by their riduculous coverage of an insignificant outbreak in the grand scheme of global illnesses. That's why we ..."

Maybe the media blew this out of proportion - but that seems to be their job these days. But if all the hype gets more people to take basic precautions, then the media chatter has been worth it. The best advice is the simplest. Wash your hands - often. Some of the books that are being listed on plagues are really good, from Camus's The Plague to Love in the Time of Cholera and the non-fiction accounts of the black death (the 3-year plague from 1347-1350 is perhaps the single most important event in European history) or the 1918 influenza, which killed more people than were killed on the battlefields of WWI. While there are good books on AIDS, there are also some great books on the succesful efforts to eradicate small pox and polio. Another good science book for lay people is the Microbe Hunters.
