T.M. M. Brenner I'd have to say the best wizard is that cute little paperclip in Windows that helps you out.

No, not really.

Alain DeWitt Lorenzo wrote: "The Druid Allanon (The Sword of Shannara). Is there any doubt?" Um, yeah. Because he's a druid and not a wizard.

Alain DeWitt Hazel wrote: "has anyone mentioned Belgareth yet? Or Beldin?" No, because the Belgariad and the Malloreon are crap series.

Respawn? lol

message 259: by Howard (new) - rated it 5 stars

Howard L lol! Master Rahl, Zeddicus Zoul ZerRander, Harry Dresdin, Addicus, Vin, Rand, Demondred, Shytan, Ergon, 100's More!! Gandolf, although the oldest and the standard to measure all by, is not the only great wizard out there.

message 263: by John (new) - rated it 5 stars

John What about Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander? A wizard of the first order from the Terry Goodkind series: Sword of Truth.

Lana Bradstream I knew there was a lot of wizards I was unfamiliar with, but I did not know it was to this extent! There are quite a few (with the exception of the obvious ones) that I never even heard of! Guess I better get to reading!

Micaela Will wrote: "Lolo wrote: "My D&D character."

Wait D&D is Dungeons and Dragons right?

message 266: by Will (new) - rated it 5 stars

Will IV That is correct.

Micaela Yay!!!!!!

An excellent choice.

I would have a hard time deciding between Allanon from the Brooks' Sword of Shanara series, or Pug from Feist's Riftwar Saga series.

If it came down to it, I think I'd have to go with Pug as my first choice as a wizard and then Allanon.

Allanon would win for my favorite overall cool character of all-time though. I like to describe Allanon to others this way: If you think of Lord of the Rings, Allanon would be like Aragorn and Gandalf rolled into one character.

Lauren Wood I don't care what anyone says!! Gandalf is the best wizard in the world!!! He defeated Sauron, Balrog, and a million orcs! Aside from that, he went from Gandalf the Grey to Gandalf the White! He rules :)
GO LOTR!!!!

Chris Lauren wrote: "I don't care what anyone says!! Gandalf is the best wizard in the world!!! He defeated Sauron, Balrog, and a million orcs! Aside from that, he went from Gandalf the Grey to Gandalf the White! He r..."

Gandalf didn't actually defeat Sauron. Technically, Frodo did. Also, he did not defeat a million orcs. Surely he killed many, many orcs, but so did the army that was with him.

I'm not trying to down Gandalf - Gandalf is awesome! Just clarifying your facts.

LOTR is the most epic fantasy book of all......but that doesn't mean other wizards weren't written to be even more powerful. Keep in mind, most of the other wizards (except Merlin) probably use Gandalf as their model to some degree.

message 271: by Lauren (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lauren Wood First of all I meant Saruman. Second of all, the killing millions of orcs wasn't meant to be specific; yes I know he didn't kill them all by himself. Third, I'm just voicing my opinion, so it doesn't need to be taken so seriously. I know there were other wizards, but again, just my opinion

message 272: by Schawn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Schawn schoepke Merlin and Gandalf are by far the greatest wizards. Dumbledore has his merits but when I put his world against Gandalf's or Merlins it seems well child like....

message 273: by Egle (new) - rated it 4 stars

Egle Snape! Severus Snape!

The charachter really was amazing, intresting and dynamic.

message 274: by Katie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Katie Fizban from the Dragonlance series ...... When he was first introduced into the books as Fizban, I thought it was hilarious. He's been my favorite "Wizard" ever since. Raistlin from the same series is a very close second.

message 275: by Pascal (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pascal has to be Gandalf. no competition

Christopher Keith David Copperfield

Gabi ALBUS PERCIVAL WULFRIC BRIAN DUMBLEDORE IS SUPERIOR! Gandalf sucks eggs. Bad word him!

^Green Pnanda O.o Guys, keep in mind that were talking about LORD OF THE RINGS wizards not harry potter and all that other stuff

Will IV ^Green Pnanda O.o wrote: "Guys, keep in mind that were talking about LORD OF THE RINGS wizards not harry potter and all that other stuff"

Uh, no. This is about wizards from any fiction. The OP himself mentioned Voldemort and Merlin, and the discussion thus far has included any wizard from any book.

Then why is the dicussion call "The HOBBIT" discussion?

^Green Pnanda O.o And Gabi,
Galdalf does not suck eggs.
Really?
You really had to say that.
Wow

Because, maybe she thought of the question after reading the book? The question is completely relevant to The Hobbit.

Tom Bombardil is not a wizard

message 285: by Anoop (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anoop Chatterjee It has to be Gandalf The White!!!

Marc Griffith They're all good choices but nobody beats "Merlin." jmo :)

message 288: by Stephen (last edited Feb 24, 2012 10:04AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Stephen Herfst Obviously it has to be Merlin from 'The Sword in the Stone' - I love that film.

I apologise for usurping your literary wizards with the far-superior cartoon one :)

...let the games begin!

message 289: by E.W. (new) - added it

E.W. Greenlee Gandalf, bar none.

*snicker* Thank you. It cheered me up just to write that. ;)

Andy

message 291: by J.D. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J.D. Field Merlin was the original and best, all the others were based on him. Most recently he crops up here Rock Anthem by J.D. Field

Kristina I believe Zeddicus and Adie from The Sword of Truth deserve a nod. They are just so cool. Not the greatest, but a big nod at least.

message 293: by Olivia (new) - rated it 4 stars

Olivia Just because he's from the first fantasy book i read, i NEED to say...Dumbledore. Wise with his powers, but able to kick some butt when needed.

Katherine Gandalf is definitely the best! I know Merlin came before him and everything, but Gandalf is more likeable in my opinion. As for Dumbledore...I think of him as this old, doddering, kind of annoying old guy, probably due mostly to the movies (sorry to Dumbledore fans!) He just doesn't seem that powerful. Gandalf is awesome -- he's a great leader, he's wise and good, he has a really funny dry wit, and he pretty much saves Middle Earth! Best wizard of all time!

message 295: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris Ben Adaephon Delat aka "Quick Ben"

message 296: by Mark (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mark A. This is a tough question to answer, but my first thought was Raistlin Majere. I think you could make arguements for others though.

message 297: by [deleted user] (new)

I'd say the big three are Merlin, Dumbledore and Gandalf and I'd go for Gandalf all the way!! There's NO competition there. I'm pretty sure Merlin was said to be the son of the devil and yes, Dumbledore is very wise and powerful but Gandalf is even more so (not to mention he comes from the Valar).

Caitlin dumbledore..

Totally true! Though I think the term 'wizard' is a little broad - so many other sorcerers, Druids and other kinds of magical 'masters' fit into this discussion!

And speaking of Druids, perhaps the most endearing is good ole Getafix.
