Do the 50 books have to be in the history genre?

May I participate? Should I list all the books I have already read this year? If I start a book, but decide to not finish it because it is terrible, may I mention it? I do not want to count it toward the challenge. I just want to keep track of having started it and will write why I gave up on it.
Your are ready to go, Chrissie. Yes, you can add the books you read so far.The first post shows you the format you must use.
Enjoy!
Bryan,thank you. Please answer the question I put to you in message 54. I want to also keep track of the books I have dumped, but do not want to count them for the challenge.
Chrissie wrote: "Bryan,thank you. Please answer the question I put to you in message 54. Does that help answer your question?
Bryan, I do not want to count them but I do want to leave a comment on my list about why I have dumped a given book. Is that OK? I will go show you what I mean and then you can tell me if it is OK. I will do it now.
I understand what you are saying, Chrissie. I think you would confuse people because the expectation is that you finished the book. If you finish a book, there is no problem with giving a book an F. It happens. However, the bottom line is that the thread really is for finished books.

OK
Christopher, sure. There is a format available that you must follow but we will help you along the way. And if you have questions we will advise you.
Bentley, I have a question. How should one switch 1-5 star ratings to A-F grades? I was originally thinking:5stars = A
4stars = B
3stars = C
2stars = D
1 star = F
But I am unsure if this is correct. Please explain.
Is it correct that when we write the reviews we should NEVER link to Internet sites for further information, and we should NEVER link to the next book in the series, but we can mention that it is a part of the series. Basically you do not want links, and you want the review very short.
I am trying to get the hang of this. I really do want to get it right according to your rules, so I can try again.
We try to keep the site as responsive as possible and you will notice that threads that have long posts and images take a long time to be brought up and refresh. Christopher just added some reviews and he did them perfectly. Check his out. You can have an A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F and you are pretty close to what the stars would equate to I imagine.
I really do not often ever have an F or a D read because I am fairly selective about what I read from the get go. But I know that many folks do and probably sample far more than I do.
I have given an F to movies because I have found that many times what critics and the average consumer thinks is funny or great stuff - I find I think it is rubbish with no story plot whatsoever and comedy which is not even slightly humorous.
I would never link to other Internet sites for further information (in terms of 50 Books) - too cumbersome I think and I believe it would be a mistake for you because you seem to digress too much for the space allowed. I would never link to the next book in the series either. Just keep your focus on the one book you are talking about - do not get distracted. I think the rule for you should be no links and keep the review very, very, short.
Also we have a rule that there are no links or references to personal reviews or blogs elsewhere - we have no self promotion and these posts would be automatically deleted.
I hope this helps.

We have a format which must be followed for the thread - we will help you but you must follow it. Is that something you agree to do?

Please set me up for 2013--On pace already.

I know I am getting a late start, but I would like to try to read 50 this year. Could you please set up a thread for me. Thanks
Steve I set up a thread for you and you are ready to go. Let us know if you need a hand with the format. Good luck!

Thanks
Steve, here is the link to your thread. It was there but maybe hard to find.http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
Hi, I've read 41 books so I think it shouldn't be a problem getting to 50. May I join the challenge, please?
Aloha, do you think you could list your 41 books for us in the format that you see in the other member threads?We usually don't set a challenge up this late in the year, but let me know your thoughts; it would be some work for you to do.
Thank you, Bryan. Now I have to curb my reviews to only a few sentences since I have a lot of books to list. That will be difficult to do. :o) I'll prepare them in the Pages program before I post them all.
If you'll be doing this again in 2014, can you please set up a thread for me? Thanks! I think it's a fun idea and a great motivator. It's also interesting to see what other books than history people are enjoying (or sometimes not enjoying).
I will get these set up by next week. And will open up threads for all of the folks who have them this year as well as any other folks who sign up here including Bill and Dave.
My home page already has a challenge counter for 2014 books. I want to read 140. It would be easier for everyone to use those and not gave to keep track there and here, wouldn't it. As you finish a book it automatically adds it once you click "read".
I'd like to be added to the HBC 50 books challenge. (I am especially fond of reading the HBC reviews others write and have used them as guidelines for future reads, so I am looking forward to this years selections). Should I also write a PM?
We will pick up all the members that participated in the challenge in 2013, G., so a PM is not necessary. Anxious to see what you will be reading this year.
We are working on the 2014 challenge and should have a thread for everyone who requested one plus all those from the 2013 challenge in about another hour. Any questions or requests......please post them here. Thanks.
For all members who are participating in the "50 Books Read" topic for the first time, please refer to the Introduction to that folder to assure that you are familiar with the required format. Thanks.
