Definitely not its ISBN. Published in 1970 as an Ace paperback (found a cover), it probably had no ISBN.

Could it have been an SBN? They only have 9 digits and predate ISBNs.

Actually, the 9 digit numbers were not to save cost. Those were SBNs, which predated ISBNs. Placing a zero in front of a SBN usually produces a valid ISBN but only if the SBN was from a US publisher. I've noticed UK used a one in front. I'm not sure about other countries. But remember that the last digit is a check digit and may need changing as well.
