Book to get a modern vocabulary in a motion

Hello Battle_slug
I am not a native speaker either, so I think I can recommend this book. The language is kind of trivial in some way, but in another it is a little bit technical at times. For example weapons and medical and physical processes are described which is rather difficult to understand if your English is not up to a certain level yet. Even I had to look up a lot of things. ;-)
I will send you a personal message for other recommendations to not "destroy" this thread in doing so. ;-)
you're welcome

I am not an English native speaker, and I am trying to broaden my every-day vocabulary (I mean - not only words, but whole common phrases, constructions useful in the real life (to talk to another people, read other books, newspapes)) while reading interesting books.
Please advise an interesting book in English to get this goal, because it gets too much time to understand if vocabulary in this particular book is obsolet or made-up.
Thank you, everyone.
