Lisa | 24 comments I agree about the early HPs being more for kids, and then the later ones being more adult-themed. Pretty heavy stuff they have to deal with.

And yes, the latest HP movie is very dark. Darker even than the last one. Can't wait for the last movie!

I think the Twilight series got worse as it went on.

message 1702: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 6 comments I just finished Hunger Games and thought it was great! I am currently reading Vampire Academy and it is light and entertaining. I have been putting off starting Awakened because I know I'll devour it in one sitting and then I'll have to impatiently wait months for the next installment.

I'm so glad to finally know that I am not the only one who thought Twilight was wasted potential.

I too have not read Harry Potter and have not seen the movie. Maybe I'll give it a try since so many have recommended it.

message 1703: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am currently reading I Have Lived A Thousand Years: Growing Up In The Holocaust, having just finished The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman: A Novel.

The beginning of the book I just finished fooled me. I thought it would be great, but it turned out to be a disappointment. My review explains why: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I feel like an idiot b/c I liked it so much in the beginning. The lines WERE funny! I feel duped. I don't dare open my mouth about the one I am currently reading. Two mistakes in a row, that I want to avoid. Yes, I do like it. Please let it remain good.

Chet | 1 comments I'm new (hello) and feel a little like the oddball here, because I am mostly into current political works and biograhies lately.

I've packed food, firewood and and other supplies because I am just about a quarter through Mark Twain's (Clements) Autobiography. It is AMAZING. We would expect it to be full of humor (and it certainly is), but he gets into such details about his life, where certain characters came from, etc... and he oftens makes comments to me, the reader, knowing that he is speaking from the grave.

message 1705: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (aesquibel25) | 8 comments I'm reading The Terror which is pretty good but a little bit slow about sailors in the 1800's trying to find a way through the Artic when their ships get stuck in the ice and they are terrorized by the cold and the isolation and dwindling food supplies as well as a malevolent creature killing off the crew. It's a pretty big book and I hope it stays interesting throughout.

I also started The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and I am also enjoying this one as well although the first few pages I didn't like the writing but the concept is interesting.

message 1706: by Susan (new)

Susan I am now starting Twisted by Andrea Kane..I go from crying with Kristin Hannah to scaring the you know what out of me with Andrea Kane! :)

message 1707: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Hello! I'm new to this group. I'm currently reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski . So far, I find it interesting. I've heard a lot of mixed comments on the book, so I'm interested to see how it plays out.

message 1708: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 13 comments I'm currently reading The Feast of all Saints by Anne Rice , because I like Anne Rice's books and it looked interesting.

I'm also reading The Dead and the Gone By Susan Beth Pferrer , because I read the first one and liked it.

message 1709: by Becky (new)

Becky (divadog) Hi Chet - The new Twain Bio is definitely on my list.

I just started "Parrot and Olivier in America". So far I'm enjoying.

message 1711: by Cecily (last edited Jan 19, 2011 03:30AM) (new)

Cecily | 576 comments Sam wrote: Re the first Harry Potters being written for children "...My friends have said the same Nicole but I'll admit I remain slightly sceptical, especially after reading the twilight saga books and not finding much improvement with them...."

The huge difference between HP (which I have read) and Twilight (which I haven't), is that in HP, the protagonists age as the books go on. Each novel is roughly appropriate for the age that Harry and his friends are at that stage of the narrative. I can't think of any other of series of books that do that, and it was great for my son who was about 9 when the first one came out: he grew up with Harry.

Where I think HP may struggle to stand the test of time is that now the whole series is available, children who enjoy the first one or two may find the later ones too daunting (in sheer size as well as plot), whereas older teens and adults may find the early books too childish.

message 1712: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments Cecily, I agree that the HP books (the two I've read so far anyway) do suit the age of the characters. I only made the comparison with Twilight because of the amount of publicity and media coverage which for both has been very similar, both in quantity and approach (both are said to be generally suitable for all ages). And Twilight did suit the ages of the characters to a certain extent, it's just that it's a shorter series and covers a shorter time period than HP (in my opinion it did anyway).

I think both series' may struggle to last because of the hype around them and because like you say about HP, some readers may enjoy only parts of the series, based on their ages. They don't come across as ones that you can read as a child or teen and still be able to enjoy later in life, unlike the Narnia series or Lord of the Rings.

I am reading American Gods by N. Gaiman and have been trying to read it for longer than 6 months. It got good reviews, and it's not a terrible book, but it's a tough read for some reason. Have you read it?

message 1715: by Lori (new)

Lori | 4 comments Hi, I am new to your book club!! I am reading The Last days of Ptolemy Grey. So far it's interesting, but slow. I like a more guts to a book. anywho, it's about a 90 yr old who lives daily with dementia and fear. According to the book summary, the man will be offered a drug to bring back his life in normal form and he will have a choice to do so and die younger or continue on as is.

I am a geriatric nurse, and so far I am finding the experience of this older gent interesting and a bit sad. Lori

Emma | 34 comments I'm currently reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin for a book club I'll be attending next week.

message 1717: by Tina (new)

Tina (garcia02) I've just started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but I'm not far enough into it to have an opinion. I've heard great things about it & can't wait to really get into the story. I just finished The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset which I really liked. I was so engrossed in the trilogy I couldn't read it fast enough. I hope The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo doesn't disappoint.

message 1718: by Alexis (last edited Jan 19, 2011 02:55PM) (new)

Alexis (aesquibel25) | 8 comments Nancy,
I have heard good thinks about American Gods as well I just haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. I like a lot of his books but some of his other ones you have to be in the mood for his writing in my opinion. I will probably be starting that soon though so if I finish it first I will let you know what I think! if you like him as an author or if you have another author you like, let me know I might have some suggestions. I finished "The Graveyard Book" today and will be starting on "What the Night Knows" by Dean Koontz.

message 1719: by Becky (new)

Becky (divadog) Hey Lori - Welcome! I'm fairly new (end of December), and so far enjoy the conversations.

I just looked up The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey and it looks very good. My husband volunteers to help seniors, and I've had relatives who have dementia - bless you and your work!

Pyxis | 10 comments I just started http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/64.... I didn't know it was non-fiction until I opened it up. It came highly recommended by my favorite reading partner, my daughter, so I have to give it a go ahead.

message 1723: by Pyxis (new)

Hi Emma,
I tried reading The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo and Ikept putting it down. Then one day a gal in a beautyshop was reading it and she really talked that book up. I bought it again and will delve into it once I am finished reading a book i have now. So good luck with it...and keep at it!

message 1725: by Rinji (new)

Rinji I am currently reading 4 different book. Book 1 Arrow's Flight (reading it because I was introduced to the author by my aunt and like the author.) Book 2 Dracula (recommended by my mom.) Book 3 Alanna The First Adventure: Series Song of the Lioness (love the author.) And lastly book 4 Dawn Rochelle Four Novels: Six Months To Live, I Want To Live, So Much To Live For, and No Time To Cry (have loved the author's works since middle school.) I love reading and always have. I try to find books that will keep my interest and I try to read books that are suggested to me.

message 1726: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I will now start Spoon River Anthology. I need a breath of fresh air, having just finished I Have Lived A Thousand Years: Growing Up In The Holocaust. Please do not misunderstand me, this book should be read by all. I, personally, would not classify it as a YA book! Here follows my GR review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 1727: by Beth (new)

Beth I'm currently reading Roadside Crosses (Kathryn Dance, #2) by Jeffery Deaver Roadside Crosses by Jeffery Deaver, because I love his books and although the Kathryn Dance character is not my favourite, I know it will be an enthralling read.

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments I'm now making my way through Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and so far its not too bad, looking to be a bit better than the first two so far.

I'm also reading The Great Right Hope by Mark Jackman, which I won on GR at the end of last year and so far it is rather amusing.

I've already read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and agree that it is a bit difficult to get through at the beginning. It was difficult for me to put down though once I got past the first 100 pages or so. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did in the end.

I just finished it last night and I really enjoyed it. Gretchen is very relatable, because she was not unhappy with her life, she just realized that she could make adjustments to bring more happiness to her life. I liked the way she went about making resolutions to follow each month and she provides lots of tips, including comments from her blog, on how to find activities to make you happier as well. I did think she overused the blog comments at some points, but even though I didn't always find them useful, I'm sure other readers will. If you read it, I hope you'll enjoy it too.

message 1732: by Chrissie (last edited Jan 21, 2011 12:39PM) (new)

Chrissie I cannot JUST read poem after poem in Spoon River Anthology, so at the same time I am reading Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps. Even though the latter is written by a poet, Ted Kooser is the 13th Poet Laureate of the US, the book is written in prose form. It is a memoir. I am loving it. I think both Amazon and B&N have a bit to taste!

message 1733: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 24 comments I finished up The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption and very much enjoyed it. What a wonderful tale (tail?) of redemption.

I then read A Walk to Rememberwhich was a quick, sappy read.

Currently about halfway through Perfection: A Memoir of Betrayal and Renewal and although it is very bittersweet, I love how the author is very honest and upfront with her emotions. It is a very "real" memoir.

message 1734: by Jan (new)

Jan | 5 comments Now I'm reading Song of the Sparrow which is a tale of Elaine of Auscolt. I've been intrigued and obsessed with the Arthurian Legend since when I was little and books about it never seem to cease in interest for me.

Valerie | 95 comments Getting ready to start readingRomancing Miss Bronte by Juliet Gael. This will be my first time reading this author... I'm going to read it because it sounded interesting, different, and I've been on a bit of a Bronte kick lately. All the reviews I've read here on GR were wonderful, so I'm really looking forward to reading it. I recently finished 2 other books about Charlotte Bronte that I really enjoyed!! The Secret Adventures of Charlotte Brontë and Bedlam: The Further Secret Adventures of Charlotte Bronte written by Laura Joh Rowland

Tory Hendershot (nghtstlkr64) | 48 comments I'm reading Dead Past Dead Past (Diane Fallon Forensic Investigation series #4) by Beverly Connor which I got as a Christmas present. Not something I would have picked up myself but I really like it. This is the fourth in the series and I just picked up the first one from the library so it'll be ready when I'm done.
I'm also reading Getting Personal Getting Personal (Red Dress Ink) by Chris Manby which I picked up due to the cover. One of my favorite things in London is riding the Tube with the evening papers and going through the personals. You always wonder about the people who write them. I'm not too fond of the book so far but I'm hoping it will get better.
One more for the moment is The Doll in the Garden The Doll in the Garden by Mary Downing Hahn , one of my favorite books. It's been awhile since I've read it.

Beverly | 194 comments I'm reading The Memory Palace by Mira Bartok. It's a memoir about children living with their mentally ill mother. Very heavy in some places. Reading the book makes me wonder how children make it through the trauma that these sisters did. It is a real commentary on the mental health conditions in the U.S.
