Eleanora (irishgirl1000) Oh and just finished Crankand it was good but read it when you either are in a bad mood or have the whole day to do nothing because you won't want to put it down!

Charli (Chazbee938) | 8 comments I've just finished reading 'Shutter Island' by Dennis Lehane and I really enjoyed it, I finished it in 3 days! So now i'm just about to strt on 'Mystic River' by the same author, i'm hoping it's a good one too. Anyone already read it? Any good?

:)

message 1603: by Chrissie (last edited Jan 04, 2011 03:20AM) (new)

Chrissie I am currently reading The Gift of Rain. For me, it is a mixed bag! I am about 2/3 through and I have learned quite a bit, but the characters seem two dimensional..... I chose it to learn more about the Far East during WW2 and also to learn more about Japanese, Chinese and Malayan cultures.

Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968, which I read over Xmas, was fabulous. My review follows: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... I cannot praise it enough!

I also read and reviewedBuddha's Orphans:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

This book really disappointed me! Disregard the blurb in the book description. It is completely misleading! Well, that is what I think......

Jan | 5 comments Right now I'm reading two books...
I'm re-reading Jane Eyre because the new film is being released in the spring and I've already read the book 3-4 times, but just to refresh my love.
I'm also reading Sophie Jordan's Firelight as recommended to me by a friend. Sort of liking it...but nothing amazing...

message 1605: by Ivan (new)

Ivan Just started reading The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells. So far another gem. This is my fifth Wells in a row, and is the February group read selection in the H. G. Wells group http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3367... - if you're interested you should pop on over and give us your input.

message 1606: by Jessica (new)

message 1611: by David (new)

David Right now I'm reading Straight Man, by Richard Russo because it has a duck on the cover and a great New York Time's Book Review ("The funniest serious novel I have read since..."). I'm enjoyng it very much.

I'm also listening to The Clan of the Cave Bear because it was recommended to me about 20 years ago.

message 1612: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nkb992) I'm reading Sleepwalk with Me by Mike Birbiglia because he is my favorite comedian of all time (no seriously, he's absolutely hilarious!). I got this one for Christmas. It's great so far but I'm only like 30 pages in.

Dudley, I haven't read Straight Man but I did read Empire Falls by Richard Russo last year and loved it. I asked for another one of his books for Christmas, too. Hope your book is just as good!

message 1613: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 24 comments Finished Making Toast: A Family Story. Love it! So honest and refreshing and real.

Currently reading (and almost finished with) Crazy for the Storm and really enjoying it as well. It is so interesting how his father's influence affected his childhood, as well as his survival instincts.

Next up:

The Passage
The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption
A Walk to Remember

Michelle, I love to chill out with Carl Hiaasen. The great thing about his books is that he is a writer for the newspaper in South Florida and you know some of the stuff that shows up in his books comes from crazy things in the newspaper which reinforces that truth is stranger than fiction!!

message 1616: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (yuphoria) | 1 comments Hi I am new to this club!
I am reading Revolt in Paradise by Ketut Tantri; the name sounds local, but she wasn't.

message 1617: by Chrissie (last edited Jan 06, 2011 10:10PM) (new)

Chrissie Lulu, that does sound like an interesting book. I added it to my lists. I am currently reading The Gift of Rain, which is about the Japanese occupation of Malaya during WW2 - so there are similarities. However I prefer memoirs over fiction, and the book you mentioned tells more about Indonesian history. Do you believe it is true? Is the book engaging? Are you reading it in English or perhaps the untranslated version? Please tell me a bit more about it. Can you recommend other books by good Indonesian authors. I like reading about different cultures through stories of people living in these different times and places. Things I am unfamiliar with! Welcom on board! GR is fabulous. It brings together people from all over the world. I like that :0)

message 1618: by Amy (new)

Amy Norman (normana) | 5 comments Currently reading Kathy Reichs books, she is amazing, but i am reading them because I love love love the series Bones on TV and now I am hooked.

message 1619: by Emma (new)

Emma | 34 comments I'm currently reading Always the Baker, Never the Bride by Sandra D. Bricker. The book isn't as silly as the title sounds, but I picked it up on a recent trip to the library, because I love to bake.

message 1620: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Shimotakahara (lshimo) I'm currently reading Room by Emma Donoghue, who was my mentor in a writing program last year. Wonderful novel! I love the freshness of the child narrator's perspective and his sense of wonder and disorientation in confronting the world, after five years in captivity....

message 1621: by Chrissie (last edited Jan 08, 2011 08:09AM) (new)

Chrissie I finished The Gift of Rain and I liked very much the descriptive information about Malayan history and Japanese and Chinese traditions. The plot was fast moving. Neverteless I did not feel empathy or understand the two main characters. You could say, I didn't like the story. So I gave it three stars. My GR review explains this in more detail: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I just started Shanghai Diary: A Young Girl's Journey from Hitler's Hate to War-Torn China and I absolutely adore it, even though I have only read about 30 pages. I felt compeled to begin a review. This never happened with the last book! It is fascinating to read about the Jews who fled to Shanghai, when so many other countries closed their doors to them during WW2. Here are my thoughts about this memoir: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

I bet I will end up loving this book. I feel it in my bones.

message 1622: by Heather (new)

Heather (danesgoddess) I am currently reading City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. I am reading because it is the second in the Mortal Instruments series and I loved the first book.

message 1623: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) I am currently reading the Private series by Kate Brian. I read the first one maybe 5 days ago and I'm on number 9 right now. They're a really good, quick but intense YA series about a private high school. Its got murder, suspense, love interests and of course tons of designer name dropping, but still really good!

I have also recently read the 3rd and 4th Diary of a Wimpy Kid books - hilarious, and am in the middle of reading Realityland: True Life Adventures at Walt Disney World, because I looove Disney :)

message 1624: by Aileen (new)

Aileen I'm currently readingWolf Hall and love it. I got it as an Xmas present. Will be reading the Book Thief (sorry, the link-thing wouldn't work) on my Mum's recommendation.

message 1625: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 70 comments Aileen - glad to hear you like Wolf Hall. It's next on my list. I heard it's a bit confusing because the author never identifies who the "he" is.

Mel (zosohoorah) Hi newbie here!

I'm reading Awakened. A friend of mine bought me the first 5 or so of these and well now i have to know how it ends. It's a little too YA for me but i read along anyway.

message 1631: by Laura (new)

Laura Inlow (lauranette) I'm currently reading Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris. I'm into fantasy fiction, as long as it's not too crazy... Harry Potter, the Twilight series, Lord of the Rings, and most currently, the Sookie Stackhouse novels. After I started reading them I also tried the TV show again and liked it a lot better after I'd gotten the chance to know the characters on my own via the books.

Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 13 comments I'm currently reading The Lord of the Rings, mainly because it was on a list of books, that was on average American has only read 6 of. Having only read 6 of them when I found the list, I've started reading more of them.

message 1636: by Chrissie (last edited Jan 12, 2011 02:24AM) (new)

Chrissie I will start today The Beautiful Mrs. Seidenman: A Novel. I like reading translated works. This Polish novel of historical fiction is said to be excellent.

I just finished Shanghai Diary: A Young Girl's Journey from Hitler's Hate to War-Torn China which was very informative and the kind of book that immediately sucks you in. The author fled in 1939, 10 years old, with her family to Shanghai, one of the few countries that left their doors open to the European Jews! My review follows, if you are curious about the book's contents and the prose style:

It's not going good, this Book The Crying of Lot 49is a tough read, very hard to get into, plus having to analize it from a literature perspective could be difficult, the other books I have to read for the class won't be as difficult so I'm just going to have to get through it the best I can!! I have to read chapers 1-4 by next Tuesday!!

I was thinking of adding this to my to-read list. It is addressed prominently in How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster, which I am reading now, as a classic quest book.

message 1639: by Jaylabelle (new)

Jaylabelle Hi!
I just signed up, it's my very first book club and I'm really excited!
I started "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by recommendation of a friend and it's taken me a while to start liking it but now it's going ok. I must say that the Spanish translation is really bad/weird, and maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time with it.
I'll keep you posted.

I also downloaded the Geography of Bliss, which is the perfect book for my daily commute. It is funny and very educational. I am learning a great deal about other cultures and countries, things that I would not find in a travel guide. The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World

Andrea (Willowpoint) | 2 comments I'm reading The Girl Who Played with Fire because I enjoyed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson so much. I am also reading The Maze Runner . First the cover caught my eye, then the story line. For me, it falls into my young adult category, and should appeal to boys. This is the cover- The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner

message 1649: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Read the maze runner, it's along the lines of the Hunger Games series, also read the Scorch Trial which is new and the 2nd book in the series. Enjoyed them both.
