:)

Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968, which I read over Xmas, was fabulous. My review follows: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/.... I cannot praise it enough!
I also read and reviewedBuddha's Orphans:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
This book really disappointed me! Disregard the blurb in the book description. It is completely misleading! Well, that is what I think......

I'm re-reading Jane Eyre because the new film is being released in the spring and I've already read the book 3-4 times, but just to refresh my love.
I'm also reading Sophie Jordan's Firelight as recommended to me by a friend. Sort of liking it...but nothing amazing...

I hope you're also reading it so you can join in this month's group discussion, which has just started here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
Looking forward to seeing you there. ;-)

:)

I'd love to join- thanks for letting me know:)

I'm also listening to The Clan of the Cave Bear because it was recommended to me about 20 years ago.

Dudley, I haven't read Straight Man but I did read Empire Falls by Richard Russo last year and loved it. I asked for another one of his books for Christmas, too. Hope your book is just as good!

Currently reading (and almost finished with) Crazy for the Storm and really enjoying it as well. It is so interesting how his father's influence affected his childhood, as well as his survival instincts.
Next up:
The Passage
The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick's Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption
A Walk to Remember

Michelle, I love to chill out with Carl Hiaasen. The great thing about his books is that he is a writer for the newspaper in South Florida and you know some of the stuff that shows up in his books comes from crazy things in the newspaper which reinforces that truth is stranger than fiction!!

I am reading Revolt in Paradise by Ketut Tantri; the name sounds local, but she wasn't.

I just started Shanghai Diary: A Young Girl's Journey from Hitler's Hate to War-Torn China and I absolutely adore it, even though I have only read about 30 pages. I felt compeled to begin a review. This never happened with the last book! It is fascinating to read about the Jews who fled to Shanghai, when so many other countries closed their doors to them during WW2. Here are my thoughts about this memoir: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I bet I will end up loving this book. I feel it in my bones.

I have also recently read the 3rd and 4th Diary of a Wimpy Kid books - hilarious, and am in the middle of reading Realityland: True Life Adventures at Walt Disney World, because I looove Disney :)

LOL, I reading The Crying of Lot 49because I'm taking an Lit course and it's required!! I feel your pain. I also have to read She's Come Undone, Black Water, My Ishmael, Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps, The Handmaid's Tale and last but not least: The Glass Castle. It's going to be an interesting semester!!!

I'm reading Awakened. A friend of mine bought me the first 5 or so of these and well now i have to know how it ends. It's a little too YA for me but i read along anyway.

great Book!

I just finished Shanghai Diary: A Young Girl's Journey from Hitler's Hate to War-Torn China which was very informative and the kind of book that immediately sucks you in. The author fled in 1939, 10 years old, with her family to Shanghai, one of the few countries that left their doors open to the European Jews! My review follows, if you are curious about the book's contents and the prose style:

It's not going good, this Book The Crying of Lot 49is a tough read, very hard to get into, plus having to analize it from a literature perspective could be difficult, the other books I have to read for the class won't be as difficult so I'm just going to have to get through it the best I can!! I have to read chapers 1-4 by next Tuesday!!

I was thinking of adding this to my to-read list. It is addressed prominently in How to Read Literature Like a Professor: A Lively and Entertaining Guide to Reading Between the Lines by Thomas C. Foster, which I am reading now, as a classic quest book.

I just signed up, it's my very first book club and I'm really excited!
I started "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by recommendation of a friend and it's taken me a while to start liking it but now it's going ok. I must say that the Spanish translation is really bad/weird, and maybe that's why I'm having such a hard time with it.
I'll keep you posted.

Susan,
Thanks so much I think I will pick that book up!! Luckly the colleg I'm going to has a writing center as well and the professor has repeated several times that she is available for any help needed during the course!!

Jo, LOL, thanks! You really do envy me, don't you? LOL!! The book is very short, but as the professor says you may feel like you are getting away with something but what is packed in the book is rich with layers! The Crying of Lot 49

:)

Mandy, I loved The Heretic's Daughter and have The Wolves of Andover (sequel to Heretic's) on my TBR list.

I also downloaded the Geography of Bliss, which is the perfect book for my daily commute. It is funny and very educational. I am learning a great deal about other cultures and countries, things that I would not find in a travel guide. The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World
