I really enjoyed The Scar. Hope you like it. There is some great imagery in the pages.

Stuart wrote: "I am readingThe Scar by China Miéville, as I wanted to see if his books lived up to the hype."I hope you enjoy it. It is the only Mieville I have read, but I confess I was disappointed. There were flashes of brilliance (particularly concerning the joyous liberation of becoming literate and of becoming amphibious, as well as some interesting ideas near the end about alternative realities and parallel universes), but overall I found it inconsistent in plot, pace, language and even genre. I felt it needed considerable work to turn it into the good book it could and probably should be.

I just finished The Homecoming Party, which I adored. It is about an Albanian/ Italian family, but of course they are just like you and I. Gorgeous writing. Funny! Touching! Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...I think I will soon start Two Babushkas tomorrow! I am reading it with a GR friend! :0) What do I do until then? Twiddle my thumbs? No, I will read GR!
I'm just starting The Bishop's Man , last year's Giller winner. It is currently snowing so it is a good excuse to stay home and read!
I have just started The Cellist of Sarajevo. Finished The Little Giant of Aberdeen Countywhich I thought was so-so. Will adjust my review after Monday's bookclub meeting. And John, why not go play in the snow? You don't usually get that much.
Chrissie wrote: "Well Shanon, didn't you love The Cellist of Sarajevo?! I did!"I will know soon, I have only just started it but glad you enjoyed it.
I must have been very tired when I read GR last night...... I thought you had finished it, and yet your message says plain and clearly that you just started it!!! Anyhow, I think you will like it! ENJOY!
I am part way through reading Never Let Me Goand have got The Weekendand Between the Assassinationsas the next two books to read. It took me a while to get into the style of writing in Never Let Me Go, but now that I have I'm enjoying the book a lot more.
Brenda wrote: "I'm just starting The Little Giant of Aberdeen County. I have heard good things about this one."Will be interested to hear what you think about it.
I recently gave up on The Disappearing Spoon, which I explain here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...I gave it two stars - it was simply "OK".
Now I have begun Two Babushkas which is the same book as Ester and Ruzya. I am not a librarian so I cannot put them together here at GR..... Maybe someone could help me?! This book is good. I like it b/c history is felt rather than told. Through these two grandmothers' lives the reader lives through Hitler's war and Stalin's peace. You learn alot about life in Bialystok, Poland. This is a Polish city dominated by the Jews. I will be reading this with a GR friend - buddy reading. We will be discussing it on her and my reviews. We will mark spoilers clearly. Here is the GR site: (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...)
Anybody may of course join us! That would be great.
Nancy wrote: "What do you think of Her Fearful Symmetry so far? I checked it out from the library a month or so ago but didn't get around to starting it. I do want to read it although all the reviews I read said..."I'm about halfway through now and it is very different to The Time Traveller's Wife. I'm not emotionally involved with the characters but they are all certainly a bit odd!!
Hello everyone!...i'm currently reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman, everything about seemed interesting to me, but i chose it at first because of the main theme, magic, off course xD..i'm halfaway through it but i surely recommend it to teenagers from 17 and above ;)
I am reading Ingrid Betancourt's Even Silence Has an End. It's long, but a very compelling and intriguing book.
I just gave up on the NY Review Classic The Family Mashber. Here is why: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...I have switched to Loving Frank. I like it immediately. It helps to enjoy Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture; you can picture the rooms and houses described. I am hoping to learn more about who he was inside!
I am reading Saturn's Children byCharles Stross which was the November read for the "Beyond Reality" group
I just finished Loving Frank and I highly recommend it if you like Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture and design. This book will tell you more about him, what his personality was like! His faults and his great abilities. You will learn about life with him, what that could have been like. Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...Now I am very excited about starting Buddha's Orphans. Why am I reading it? Well b/c it is a love story and I think I will learn about Nepal. It has also gotten great reviews.
Half Broke HorsesSo good. Started it because The Glass Castlewas so good and I found Walls to be such a gifted writer in it. The Glass Castle doesn't disappoint. Entertaining reading and gives a real-life look at ranching life and a strong, spirited woman as she grows up then raises a family using her intelligence and not a little feistiness on the tough western U.S. landscape.
Chrissie wrote: "I just finished Loving Frank and I highly recommend it if you like Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture and design. This book will tell you more about him, what his personality was like!..."Hi Chrissie, Glad you liked Loving Frank. It's one of the books my in person book group keeps mentioning even though it's been months since we read it.
It's been a busy few weeks what with holiday stuff but I did manage to finish The Illuminator which I really enjoyed and a classic mystery, Night Ferry to Death which was also terrific. Currently reading The Lodger for my in person group and Last Rituals.
I am reading At My Mother's Knee by Paul O'Grady - an unusual choice for me because I do not normally choose to read celebrity autobiographies, but this one has had very good reviews. I downloaded it as one of my six book treats for Xmas (we are likely to get snowed in again during the Xmas and New Year break).
OMG, Jenny, I tried reading that book and didn't get any further than the scene where the child George looks into the mailbox and, I guess, gets pulled in...seemed very gruesome to me. I also have tried watching the miniseries movie, but the clown scared me too much...

OMG That clown was terrifying. I hid in another room with my head under the pillow so I couldn't hear the movie while my roommates watched it. (I am not very good with scary movies - obviously) I can't even look at the cover of that book.
Jenny wrote: "I'm giving It a go. May take me a while though, it's huge!!"My absolute favorite King book!
Cries Unheard: Why Children Kill: The Story of Mary Belli somehow got to the mary bell case and it really interested me and i wanted to find out more about this. couldnt get ahold of the original one written in the 70s, so i got this one!
Catherine wrote: "im readingEclipseat the moment only getting around to reading it now"that is my FAVORITE book in the series! enjoy :)
I'm currently reading Lady Susan by Jane Austen and Must Love Dogs by Claire Cooke.I chose Lady Susan because it was short and I loved Pride & Prejudice.
I chose Must Love Dogs because I LOVED the movie and I am always interested in reading the book versions. Also, had I not seen the movie, the title would have caught my attention, as I am an avid dog lover.
I am reading the Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano and Have You Met Miss Jones by Tarsha Jones.I am big fan of Bolano so it goes without saying that I'm trying to read as many of his books that are printed in English as possible. The second book by Miss Jones, is a memoir from radio personality and former R&B singer, Miss Jones. I guess I was just curious. I've been reading a lot of memoirs/biographies mixed in with my literary fiction. Before this one, I read Basquiat: A Quick Killing In Art (about Jean-Michel Basquiat) and Let's Talk About Pepa (about rapper Pepa from Salt & Pepa).
Currently reading Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. Read it years ago but didn't get it back then. I recently found a paperback copy on bookmooch so am giving it another go. Trouble is I've been ill all over christmas so not got much reading done!
I am currently reading Kirby's Animal Factory.
I was asked to do a review of the work but have a great interest in learning about the topic. I just started the work but I have heard a lot of good things about it!
I'm currently reading 'Mariana' by Susanna Kearsley. This is my usual read but was ...a recommendation. I'm a historical romance addict whereas this is more a ghost/timeslip/romance but after a slow start I'm now thorougly gripped.
I'm reading Gone by Michael Grant AGAIN because I just finished Lies (also from the gone series) and I can't find a better book plus the Gone series is the one series I don't mind reading again lol =P Ity's a while till Plague comes out though but I'm really excited lol =)
I started this new book: The Princess & The Thug Hood Love. So far so good. I like romances with a twist.
I'm currently reading Murakami's 'After dark' and Pamuk's Snow.. I really like Murakami's books and have read some before...
I am reading the Magdalene La Batarde series by Roberta Gellis and really liking it. I chose it because I liked the Mistress of the art of Death series. I am actually new to this genre but interested in any good medieval mystery recommendations.
at the moment i am re-reading "the color purple" by alice walker. Why? well the smart aleck answer would be why not lol JK but seriously i love the way that alice writes her imagery, her truthfulness of the time and because i love any good book with an awesome heroine in it and this book has more than one
Hi! I'm brand new to Goodreads and I'm currently reading The Catcher In The Rye (can't believe I haven't read it before now!) and its great, of course. I find myself underlining phrases on almost every page that I don't want to forget. Anyway, I'm really open to more book recommendations, please!
currently reading the animorphs The Invasion as they're approx 90 pages each and I can read therm in a day. Work and life generally means unless it's the school holidays I don't have time to read. Although next on my list will be the Millenium triology The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which I've had since summer.
I'm reading Jane Eyre, and to be honest I don't know what happened to me because before September last year I wasn't reading more then 2-3 books a year. Since then I read 7 or 8.Now back to the question, I wanted to read a classic, and this book was recommended by a friend. Plus I want to improve my English Vocabulary so every word I don't know I'm putting it down on paper. ( doesn't seem a hard read though )
