Nascha (najstar125) | 10 comments Jenny, I'll try to remember to come back and post a review. (But I will most definitely write one). I'd heard a lot about this book and I'm finally reading it.

Melanie, I read an article about Roberto Bolano's books in the NYT and picked up a few of them. So I'll definitely write a review and let you know what I think.

message 103: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Jenny, In the same vein as TOBG, I read the queen's fool by Philippa Gregory. I actually liked that one a lot more than some of her other books (*cough*Wideacre*cough*).

message 104: by Elise (new)

Elise Ravenclaw (eliseravenclaw) I'm reading The pillow book by Sei Shonagon, it's nice and easy to read since it is a journal and the entries are short.

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments I'm now reading A Christmas Carol, but the bf has just got back from working offshore for 2 months and is distracting me. I do so much reading while he is away :)

message 106: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments I've got a couple on the go, just now;

I'm reading my first attempt at an ebook (not as much fun, reading off your PC screen, as it would be if I had a laptop, I must say) so I selected a collection of shorts by Kelly Link entitled "Stranger Things Happen"; they're okay so far...
Also, as my 'walking around' book, I'm reading one of Sharyn McCrumb's Appalachian Ballads ("The Rosewood Casket") which I'm really enjoying, as I expected I would!

message 107: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Finished Virtually Eliminated by Jefferson Scott over the weekend. It was alright..not great, but alright.

Now about 60 pages from the end of The Dangerous Husband by Jane Shapiro. I am not liking it in the least, but I figured I should finish it.

Up next is The Anxiety of Everyday Objects by I'm not sure but the last name starts in an S. I think after that one I am going to finish up the last two books in the Series of Unfortunate events and that will be it for my S's right now. Then on to the T authors.

message 108: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I have read A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens & Harvesting the Heart - Jodi Picoult for a couple of challenges on Goodreads. I am now reading Skipping Christmas - John Grisham for a booksite's December read.

I don't like reading e-books either because I have to finagle the laptop away from the husby so I can read. At least with a book you don't have to wait for someone to finish writing an e-mail !

message 110: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Silent Night - Mary Higgins Clark. Will read The Babysitter's Club: Dawn's Big Date - Ann. M. Martin.

message 111: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments yeah...well, I'm still making my way thru "Stranger Things", but I've finished with "The Rosewood Casket" (LUVed it!!) and now I'm just picking up "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham.

message 112: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished The Babysitter's Club: Dawn's Big Date - Ann. M. Martin. Will now read Lucky - Alice Sebold.

message 113: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 240 comments Fiona,

I really liked Lucky. It's definitely not light reading, but I found it well written. The events that take place in the book happen not too far from where I live. Anyway, I liked this book better than Lovely Bones.

message 114: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I read Lovely Bones and thought that was ok. I was not impressed with The Almost Moon.

message 115: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) I started The Thirteenth Tale today - loving it so far!

message 116: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 240 comments Fiona,
I have a copy of The Almost Moon that I got through a book swapping site. It's on my TBR but I have heard many people say they didn't care for it. Is it even worth giving a shot? Lucky was definitely my favorite of the three books she wrote. It actually didn't even get that much attention until The Lovely Bones came out. They actually re-released it. I'm so glad they did! I think part of the reason I like it so much is that it is a memoir. The topic is not pleasant but it was a page-turner for me.

message 117: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Jaime, imo hun, I would let you make your own decision concerning The Almost Moon. I am gonna be starting Lucky today.

message 118: by Zainab (new)

Zainab | 3 comments I finished reading Kartography by Kamila Shamsie last night. And it's by far one of the best books I have read so far. Just the way she describes relationships is just magical and transports you into a completely different world.

message 119: by Zainab (new)

Zainab | 3 comments I also loved The time traveler's wife. I don't see how the two are connected but maybe I finished reading God of small things before I started the time traveler's wife that maybe I find the two beautiful in the same context. So I suggest that the people who liked the time traveler's wife should read God of small things. It's worth it.

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments As well as reading the Woman in White, I'm now reading the Cider House Rules by John Irving. I've had it checked out of the library for ages now, and I'm sure they are going to demand it back soon :P

message 122: by Zainab (new)

Zainab | 3 comments I'm reading the White Mughals currently. I have heard a lot about it so decided to read it. Hope I won't be disappointed=)

message 123: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Been reading Rhinoceros - Colin Forbes

message 124: by Nascha (new)

Nascha (najstar125) | 10 comments Finished reading White Teeth late last week. It was good in my opinion. I gave it 4 stars. I also wrote a review for it. There are a mix of reviews for this book but I think that's because Smith didn't give us a direct plot for the book and there was a lot of history and details given. But it was interesting and I enjoyed it.

I'm reading Distant Star by Bolano now and will read Nights in Chile next.

message 125: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Rhinocerous - Colin Forbes. About to start When The Bough Breaks - Jonathan Kellerman

message 126: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Just started Saving fish from Drowning by Amy Tan. I'm having a hard time getting into it, but I really like her writing, so I am going to try and stick with it. Um...over this past weekend-ish I read The Penultimate Peril & The End by Lemony Snicket and then I read Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes. Meh...easy and fun for all of them.

I'm getting so close to the end of the alphabet, I can almost taste it. Alas, I will still have over a hundred on my TBR shelf by the time Christmas rolls around, and all I asked for this year was books. I fear I am never going to get it down.

message 127: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I am reading 4 books in total:

The Greek Key - Colin Forbes
Lucky - Alice Sebold
When the Bough Breaks - Jonathan Kellerman
In Their Footsteps - Tess Gerritsen

message 128: by Anna (new)

Anna (AnnaPeace) | 4 comments Hello everyone, I'm new here and would love to share with you a couple of books I have just finished:

Gods Own Country by Ross Raisin - first person narrative about a teenager from Yorkshire that lives in a farm at the top of the hill and watches as the town below grows higher and closer to him. He is mocking of the townfolk and their ignorance of country ways but he then falls for the daughter of some newcomers. Increasingly disturbing yet remaining hilarious at the same time - wonderful.

Also - If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor which alternates from third person to first person. Its about the effect of a tragic event on a street and how the residents react to it. Its a beautifully written poetic book and staggering for a debut novel

message 129: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Anna, I met Jon McGregor a couple of months ago. A nice man as well.

message 130: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments Hey Anna welcome to the group! The Ross Raisin book I've just been looking at as I think it's his first book and was published in 2008 :) Fits one of our monthly read themes for January!

message 131: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Fi,

How was Lucky? I have it on my TBR shelf and I passed it over on my last jaunt through the S's. I was just hesitant to read it.

By the by, Still reading Saving Fish From Drowning. I feel like I've been reading it for forever (since Sunday).

Also, in a related vein. OMG what am I going to do you guys? I still have about 122 on my TBR shelf and I know for certain I am getting oodles of books for Christmas (saw mom's Borders bags, SQUEE). Also, I just received a $25 gift card for B&N from my friend and I am getting a $50 gift card to Borders in the mail. Whatever will I do??? I'm never going to finish my TBRs!!

Is that a good thing or a bad thing, ya think??

message 132: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Heather, calm down sweetie. I have over 600 books on my bookshelves thats in my bedroom lol.

Also Heather, I haven't started her book yet, due to reading other books for other challenges.

message 133: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Ha ha!! Finally finished Saving Fish from Drowing (gotta love covering the phones at work)!

Now going to be starting The Man on the Ceiling by Steve & Melanie Tem. Not sure about it, as it has gotten some interestingly mixed reviews on GB, but we shall see.

message 134: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Just realized...wow. I was a bit over hyper on that post yesterday. My apologies. Thanks for talking me down from the metaphorical ledge Fiona.

message 135: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 240 comments I just started The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb. I loved his other two books and am hoping this one is just as good. So far, so good. I'm only a few pages into it but can already tell it'll be one of those books I won't want to put down when I have to!

message 136: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished When the Bough Breaks - Jonathan Kellerman. Will now read In Their Footsteps - Tess Gerritsen.

You're right Jenny. Not bad for a handsome 30 year old...

message 138: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) So, finished The Man on the Ceiling today. In my opinion....don't bother. What drivel.

Starting an Anthology called The New Weird. It should be something fun to get me through the holiday!

message 139: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (wildbanshee) | 10 comments I'm reading Jacob's Ladder by Donald McCaig, seem to be taking forever, want to finish so I can start Twilight, borrowed from the library, had to wait for it because it is on a waiting list, have to have it back by January 3rd. OH MY!!!

message 140: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Sandra, no worries. You will wizz through Twilight. It is an exceptionally easy read. Just try not throwing it too much, since it is a library book.

I hope you like Twilight. I had a hard time getting through it because the writing is so terrible. At the same time, I couldn't put it down because the story is really good. This book makes me feel so conflicted!

message 141: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished In Their Footsteps - Tess Gerritsen. Now gonna read Stardust - Neil Gaiman.

message 142: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Fiona, I hope you love it! Which version did you get?

message 143: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I've got the film version (I watched the film at weekend with the kids).

message 144: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) The book is fairly different from the film, so please keep that in mind when you are reading it. So many people seem to be disappointed by the book after watching the movie. They are both excellent, just different.

message 145: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Heather, so I have seen and read so far lol.

message 146: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Still trying to read Stardust - Neil Gaiman.

message 147: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Text Game - Kate Cann and will now read THE MAN IN THE PICTURE - SUSAN HILL

message 148: by Elise (new)

Elise Ravenclaw (eliseravenclaw) I'm reading The Coins of Judas, it seemed interesting:
"2000 years ago, 30 coins betrayed Jesus, 2 millennia later, 3 reappear. Their possessors have the power to achieve anything they want. The price- A pact with the devil."
I'm just on page 44 since it isn't very engaging so far :/

message 149: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished The Man in the Picture - Susan Hill. Will now read Arctic Hero - Catherine Johnson.

message 150: by Ellie (new)

Ellie I am reading The Mitfords: Letters Between six sisters, and its really good I chose that as I am really interested in them as a family....I am about to start the Gormenghast trilogy, which my dad gave me for xmas as they are his favourite books.
I normally read books that people give or recommend to me, or otherwise I will choose them by their covers!
