message 51: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Melanie, I hope you like it. I'm a Chris Moore lover myself and am anxiously awaiting his new one in Feb. His books are the few that I will actually buy in Harcover. I think I have three different formats of Lamb as well, including the bible version. Love it!

I just started Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. Someone please tell me if they have read it yet. It is good so far, but I'm only 30 or so pages into it.

message 52: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Hi Heather-
I read Dirty Job awhile and liked that one. My husband is also pretty excited about the his new one coming out (about Shakespere, I think?).

I read Labyrinth when it first came out. I remember enjoying the story. She just released another one a couple months ago (not a sequel) and I didn't think that one was as good.

message 53: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) I started The Historian in bed last night, but I was so tired I only read a couple of pages.

I enjoyed The Labyrinth too, an interesting story. I think it takes a little while to get going though.

message 54: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I finished Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Ablom. Now I am readin The Business of Dying - Simon Kernick.

message 55: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Just finished The Friday Night Knitting Club...So sad!! Now I'm going to read either The Almost moon or The Boy in The Stripped Pajamas. I can't decide which!

message 56: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Stephanie, hope u get on better than I did with Almost Moon hun. I hated it and dicarded it. I loved Boy in the Blue Striped Pyjamas. Made me really sad and I think I cried near the end.

message 57: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments Oh, Fiona, I lust LUV Karin Slaughter's series, and I think Faithless was my favorite of the lot! ('Course, I haven't read the last one yet) But, I gotta say, Tuesday's with Morrie did nothing for me, except to give me the feeling that Mitch Albom is rather selfish (Let the dying old man spend his last days with people who loved him, for goodness sake!)

Let's see ...I have three on the go currently;

"Mark Twain's Book for Bad Boys and Girls" I'm reading because, well, because I love everything Twain, his birthday is coming up, and I'm using this for a challenge I'm participating in on the web.

"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" I'm reading before bed, because , again, I luv Sherlock, and this is going to be my selection for ANOTHER challenge (Every Month's a Holiday) in celebration of "Forget-me-not" day...Holmes was my first "adult" mysteries when I was a kid, and I haven't read any for some time, so...

And, finally. I'm reading "E is for Evidence" by Sue Grafton, cause I recently started this series and this is the next title I have! (I missed D is for Deadbeat, but I'm sure I'll go back to it!)

message 58: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Maurean, have u read her 2nd series (Karin Slaughter's)? I have Triptych and Fractured to read as well as Skin Privilege aka Beyond Reach.

Greetings from a group newbie!
Just been reading through the posts and got a few ideas for the TBR list, thanks!

Just for the record, am currently reading Willa Cather's 'My Antonia'. Picked it up after reading 'O Pioneers' by the same author, a book I really enjoyed. Here's hoping for some more literary goodness.

message 61: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 6 comments I am currently reading Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. I was in the mood for something funny, after I just finished two serious novels. I haven't stopped laughing :)

message 62: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 52 comments Lisa, David Sedaris is really funny. I love all his books. I have to do the same thing: read something funny or at light after reading a serious book. Right now I'm reading Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and a nonfiction book called The Wishing Year by Noelle Oxehandler.

message 63: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) What a story. Just finished The Business of Dying - Simon Kernick. Will now read Where There's Smoke - Simon Beckett.

message 64: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I'm currently reading Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. Actually, I only have about 100 or so pages left. I am reading it because....well because it was on my TBR shelf and since I am reading roughly alphabetically by author right now (cause I'm a freak), it was next up in my M authors to choose from.

I think next up is Midnight for Charlie Bone, just because it was written by Nimmo.

message 65: by Lisa (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:45AM) (new)

Lisa | 6 comments I just finished water for elephants, and really enjoyed it, now I'm starting on The Memory Keepers Daughter, cause its on my list and I've been wanting to read it for awhile now.

message 66: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I really liked "The Memory Keeper's Daughter, Lisa, hope you like it too. Elephants was just a little better than okay for me.

message 67: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments What did you think of "Labyrinth", Heather? I have that on my wanna-read list, but I have heard such mixed reviews of it (especially here on GR) I'm second guessing rather I really DO wanna read it! LoL...

message 68: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) Maurean, I really enjoyed Labyrinth - definitely worth a read I'd say, thought it is a bit long!

I borrowed Steve and Me by Terri Irwin off a friend today, so need to read that for a book group. Not really looking forward to it, but we'll see how it goes!

message 69: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments Oh, I think I would like to read "Steve and Me"; I always liked the guy, and his daughter is adorable! Let me (us) know what you think of it, Suzie. (oh, and thanks for the input on Labyrinth...I *do* believe I wanna give it a go!)

message 70: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments "Maurean, have u read her 2nd series (Karin Slaughter's)? "

No, Fiona, I haven't tried any of her other works, but I do enjoy the Grant COunty series (altho, I've been kind of putting off reading the last one, because I inadvertently read a spoiler review that mentioned the killing off of a certain character, and I'm not really looking forward to that! LoL)

message 71: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Maureen,

labyrinth was pretty good. I gave it 4 stars. The end is kinda weird, but it works within the story.

message 72: by Megan (new)

Megan I'm currently reading:

The Tragic School Bus:
Only because I've had it sitting around since I was a child and I want to know what it's all about. Especially after reading Wuthering Heights, I needed something light.

message 73: by Terri (last edited Nov 25, 2008 04:19AM) (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) I finished Steve & Me this morning. I found it to be a very touching account of Steve Irwin's life with his wife. She may not be the best writer in the world, but her total love for the guy is completely obvious throughout the book. To be honest I found it a bit sugary-sweet and 'oh he was perfect' ... but I suppose you shouldn't really expect anything else. The writing is a bit disjointed, but all in all enjoyable reading. Tears were shed!

Back to The Historian now!

message 74: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) Hi nikki I have read the Post-birthday world and to be honest I can't remember what the storyline of it was at all! I remember enjoying it though. How are you finding it?

I'm currently reading The Door by Magda Szabo because it was reviewed on here by someone last month when I happened to click on the explore button and it looked good! I am enjoying it a lot as well so it was a good pick. Had never heard of the book or the author before so I have made a discovery. I like it when I read random books and enjoy them. It's good to find new authors.

message 75: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Finished Midnight for Charlie Bone over the weekend and now I am reading "The Dive From Clausen's Pier" which is pretty good so far. I read a few reviews on it here, but it seems to be one of those books that you either really like a lot or you hate with the passion of a thousand suns.

If anyone was actually wondering how I pick out my books to read next, I have 4 shelves to TBR books, so I decided to start reading them in roughly alpha order by author's last name. This means that if I have 5 or 6 authors with the last name starting with the same letter I just pick out a couple. If I went exactly Alpha, I'd probably have keeled over and died by now. So, I am working through "P" right now. I just really really want to get rid of most of my TBRs and this seemed like the most logical method.

message 76: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) I was just thinking Heather that if you read them in alphabetical order you would never ever get to the S's or the T's or the V's!

I choose which one i'm going to read next by how much i found my last one a chore. If it was a tough one i'll pick the thinnist one waiting to be read and vice versa!

message 77: by Nascha (new)

Nascha (najstar125) | 10 comments Hi all, another newbie here!

I just finished Playing With Boys by Alisa Valdez-Rodriguez.

I'm currently reading a few books (I have this annoying habit of trying to read more than 1 book at the first time.) So for starters I'm reading White Teeth by Zadie Smith. I've heard a lot about this book and many mixed reviews, but so far I'm really enjoying it. I think it's awesome that the writer was only 24 when she completed it.

I am reading a few books by Roberto Bolano next. All are in my current reading list.

message 78: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments Hey Naj, welcome to the group!! I keep seeing White Teeth and liking the cover :P. Let me know if it is any good!

message 79: by Melanie (last edited Nov 25, 2008 09:00PM) (new)

Melanie Naj - Let me know how you like the Robert Bolano books. I have really been wanting to read The Savage Detectives and 2666.

message 80: by Maurean (new)

Maurean (moreads) | 10 comments Well, like Heather, I'm trying to work thru some of the books on Mt. TBR before the new year creeps in (hopefully, I'm making room for all the NEW books Santa will bring!) Anyway, in that vein, I'm currently reading "The Ax" by Donald Westlake -sort of a comedic horror tale about a middle-manager 3 years out of work, who decides the only way to rid himself of the competition is to kill 'em off! Highly entertaining so far, I must say (but, I usually DO enjoy Westlake.)

message 81: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I have read Trouble in Mind - John Harvey & Sherlock Holmes: Short Stories - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Still readin Where There's Smoke - Simon Beckett

message 82: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments I've just finished reading The Other Boleyn Girl and I've just started The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency as I needed something short and sweet :)

message 83: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 52 comments I just finished reading Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist and Speak. both of them were very good. Next I'm going to read My Sister, My Love by Joyce Carol Oates.

message 84: by Elise (new)

Elise Ravenclaw (eliseravenclaw) I'm reading The Savage Garden by Mark Mills because I like mysteries, specially if they take place in old manors. It has mixed reviews, but I'm liking it so far.

message 85: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) I've just started The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeister. It is giving me chills already!

(I decided to leave The Historia for now but I will come back to it as I was enjoying it, just finding it a bit slow-going)

message 86: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments I think that's why I didn't like The Historian, I thought the beginning was really good!

message 87: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished Where There's Smoke - Simon Beckett. Can't decide between Dissolution - C.J.Sansom or The Intruders - E.E. Richardson.

message 88: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Jenny, what did you think of the TOBG? I read it a while back now but really liked it, it made me go out and buy The Tudors and Elizabeth and want to read more books by Gregory.

message 89: by Jenny, honorary mod - inactive (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) | 846 comments I love anything about Henry VIII, don't know why. I really liked it, some people moan that it's not historically accurate but I'd prepared myself for that. I thought it was a really good story. Do you mean the BBC series 'The Tudors', I love that as well. And years ago Ray Winstone was in a series about Henry VIII which I also loved! I've read 'The Constant Princess' by Gregory as well, TOBG was better as it held my attention the entire time. TCP was a bit long winded and repetitive in places. I'm definately going to read more from her.

message 90: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Yeah, the BBC series, I've only watched the first four so far but am really enjoying it.

message 91: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Maurean: I totally know how you feel! I am desperate to get through my TBR, but as the shelf is currently at around 130 or so...(Down from 150 a couple of months ago) I am just wanting to get the shelf under 75 or so...I think I would be happy then.

Oh, btw, done with The Dive at Clausen's Pier..meh, it was so so. I'm halfway through Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. It's actually really interesting so far. Makes me want to cook more, and more elaborate food. yummy. I thought it a good book to read through Thanksgiving as it's all about food!

message 92: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Dissolution, C.J. Sansom (Sons chose this), Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer (need to read to give back by January), The Intruders - E.E. Richardson (Library book).

message 93: by Melanie (last edited Nov 29, 2008 04:36PM) (new)

Melanie Heather,
I am glad you are liking Julie and Julia. I really enjoyed it - had me laughing out loud at some parts.

message 94: by Kipahni (new)

Kipahni | 144 comments I am reading Sex and the origions of death. It's not as dark and titlating as it sounds it's about how cellular death and sex are related.
I suppose I chose it because I just finished Bill Bryson's "short history of nearly everthing" and wanted to read more about something scientific that didn't involve a text book.

message 95: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Kip: have you ead Dr. Tatianta's sex advice to all creation?? Hilarious science book about all of the different types of mating practices of different species. What I like about it is the how it is written in an agony aunt style.

message 96: by Jo (new)

Jo (Jo_Wales) | 62 comments I'm currently reading The Horse Whisperer.

Apart from being a bit Americanised this is proving to be one of those books I just don’t want to put down! If you’re an animal lover it really is a difficult read at times but compulsive.

Two girls go out for a horse ride in the snow, unaware that a truck driver is heading their way. The result is catastrophic but then the horse whisperer comes along…….

I really, really would recommend it.

message 97: by Kipahni (last edited Nov 29, 2008 01:38PM) (new)

Kipahni | 144 comments heather thanks for the recommend! I will def. look it up!

message 98: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 240 comments I just started Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich. I've had it on my TBR for a long, long time now and it introduces characters that are in some of her subsequent novels. I decided to read it now because I have always been very interested in Native American cultures and I have other books by her but thought I should read this one first!

message 99: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Jenny, to go way back to your discussion on TOBG and The Constant Princess, the next in the series is The Boleyn Inheritance -- I read it this month and I want to warn you that it is pretty tedious, but I enjoyed it. I like that they're each written in a slightly different style. I hope you enjoy it, whenever you read it.

message 100: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) So...Finished Julie and Julia last night. I enjoyed it, and if you are into food and don't worry about occasional cursing, I would rec for you.

Just started The Blue Moon Circus by Michael Rahleigh today. I'm about 55 pages into it or so, and I am liking it so far. It's about a Circus....which is tops in my book, but no freaks so far. (shucks)
