John and Heather,
Hold on to your hats...it gets even better! :-)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Starting Year Of The Hare by Arto Paasilinna. I'm trying to read some Finnish authors for once. This should be a light, quick read.

Dear Heather, Thanks for your view. So far the book is very readable I think but is little more than a travelogue. I cannot yet see it as a "page-turner" though I feel fully involved with the heroine. I reckon our interchange proves the value of forums such as this one! All the best.

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Just finished Every Last Cuckoo A Novel . It was better than I anticipated (4 stars). The main character, Sarah, is a mature mother and wife who continues to grow as her years move along, actually being quite hip in her thinking. I also loved the Vermont scenery and references...brought back good memories. I am now reading The Magician's Assistant .

message 805: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Just started 1984. About time, right?

message 806: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I finished the Gargoyle. I really enjoyed it! 4*, I would have given it 4 1/2 but no half stars ya know.

I just started in on Weaveworld by Clive Barker last night. One of my best friends swears by this book and says she absolutely loves it, so I thought I would give it a try. It's pretty good so far.

I just started The Gargoyle today. I have been having trouble getting into a book lately for one reason or another. I hope this one takes. Good to hear you enjoyed it, Heather.

message 808: by Victoria (new)

Victoria I've started Mr Toppit by Charles Elton and I'm completely swept up in it. I heard good things about the book on the radio and adored the cover so signed up to it on the RISI mobile library.

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments I have just started The Tent Peg for my real life book club and it seems pretty interesting so far. I am enjoying how its laid out. Had to put Shanghai Girls down so that I could get to this one - and I have picked up Gargoyle because so many of you were discussing it.

Ooooo...I've been having trouble lately getting into books. I've started several and put them down. I think I finally found a keeper with The Gargoyle. It's not for the light of heart, but, man, this guy can write! He really stirs my emotions. Wonderful! Have you started it yet, Shannon? I wasn't sure if you meant you just bought it or that you actually started it.

message 812: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I am glad you are enjoying it Jaime! The last half be prepared to fly through it! I just seemed to anyway from the middle to the end. I agree, the narrator is a "bit" on the harshly icky side to begin with, but you'll get used to it and he does get better, promise!

message 813: by [deleted user] (new)

I picked up 'The Girl who Played with Fire' by Stieg Larsson yesterday and have been reading it on and off since then. The 1st book was enjoyable but this one is fantastic. There are lots of different strands in it and I want to know how they all come out.

I am now half way through Gargoyle and loving it but unfortunately life keeps getting in the way and I am having trouble finding reading time. Sadly painting trim trumps reading on sunny days!

message 815: by Donna (new)

Donna | 79 comments I am reading The Calling by Inger Ash Wolfe and listening to The Disagreement A Novel by Nick Taylor. Both interesting but very different. The Calling is a page turner of a book as the Ontario police chase a serial killer across Canada. In The Disagreement a young Virginian learns the more subtle problems of the Civil War while studying medicine at the University of Virginia.

Jaime, I did start the Gargoyle but I knew I wouldn't have time to really read it so it is set aside but wow, what a start and I think I will really like it. I have so many books on the go at the moment. I am totally taken with Aritha Van Herk's The Tent Peg so will finish that shortly (and in time for my book club meeting) then I will finish Shanghai Girls (Lisa See) that I recently bought |(and am halfway through). Then probably onto the Gargoyle and will continue to plug away at Soul Mountain (that I have been reading off and on again for about a year!)and Three Men in A boat (almost done). Sometimes I have a book in each room but the ones going right now are a little too deep for that (although I could read something else with the Tent Peg - its easy reading and good) - and Canadian (puff up with national pride - since I can't write, I might as well claim my compatriats). Ok now must get off GR or I won't finish anything!

message 817: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Recently finished Rules (4 stars), The Magician's Assistant (2 stars), and The Last Days of Dogtown A Novel (1 star). Just beginning Hannah's Dream A Novel .

message 818: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Just finished Weaveworld. It was fantastic, though I am not sure it would be everyone's cup of tea.

I am now going to start The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff. It seemed like a completely different book than what I just read so I thought it would be fun to have the complete change. We'll see though.

I just picked that one up second hand at Barter Books in Alnwick the other day, along with Tracey Chevalier's Falling Angels.- Don't know when I'll get round to reading it but I'm looking forward to it!

message 821: by John (new)

John Just finished "The Gargoyle" - Andrew Davidson. I really enjoyed it. A great mix of a contemporary story with tales of how the couple met 700 years ago.

Now I am starting "In the Name of Honour" - Mukhtar Mai.

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Just finished Hannah's Dream A Novel. This is now one of my favorites! What a beautifully touching story! 5 stars...highly recommend!!! Also read Plain and Simple A Woman's Journey to the Amish (4 stars). About to start In the Shadow of Gotham .

Mary wilhelm (marywilhelm61) | 5 comments Has anyone read "The Elegence of the Hedgehod"? Or am I late (as usual) for that discussion? I read 13 books over my summer vacation and that was - by far - the most interesting and compelling! Anyone agree?

message 826: by Ally (last edited Aug 22, 2009 05:45AM) (new)

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) Hi Mary - I absolutely loved The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and I've also read The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which I wasn't so sure of! - I've written reviews of both if you wanted to take a look. How are you finding Elegance?

Ally

message 827: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Just finished Mr Toppit has anyone else read this one? Think I might start the Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff next. Have a bit of a stockpile from the library.

message 828: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I just finished the 19th Wife. Quite good and quite insightful but sometimes the interplay between the historical parts and the modern day story just didn't work for me and I found some of the historical parts fairly preachy and boring. meh, 4*

I have decided to start re-reading the Harry Potter series again since it has been about 2 years since my last run through. I have been finding that I miss Harry and the gang, and the movie didn't really hit my HP fix right. Mad love as always though.

Bernard Collard | 10 comments Has anyone come across "The Luminous LIfe of Lilly Aphrodite", or its author Beatrice Colin. The book is being advertised on Amazon, but I cannot find a review wither on Amazon, or here. Any idease
please?

message 830: by Ally (new)

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) I've read [Book: The Luminous life of Lily Aphrodite] and have written a review of it if you wanted to see a review. Also - it was published as 'The Glimmer Palace' in the USA so maybe try under that.

Pollyanna (polly8) I'm currently reading Circus of the Damned (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #3) I love this series, it is quite cheesy but then it started in the 90's so I guess it is to be expected. Plus I love her take on the supernatural.

Bernard Collard | 10 comments Heather wrote: "Bernard - I liked the Historian and I thought for the most part it was a page turner, however, there are some dry parts and some people will completely disagree. and think that the book was terribl..." Well I gsve up on the end of chapter 27. I have never liked books that give you little snippets of more than one story continuing at the same time. I have never been able to persist with Galsworthy for this very reason. Thus in spite of the beautiful writing I left and am now reading Barbara Vine's "The Chimney Sweeper's Boy" - a much easier read. Thanks again for your help

message 833: by John (new)

John "In the Name of Honour" is a very powerful book. Imagine being gang raped in the name of "honour justice" for an alleged slight committed by you 12 year old brother. That is what happened to Mukhtar Mai. Instead of committing suicide she fought back and now is a champion for educating women in Pakistan. A very worthwhile read.

message 834: by John (new)

John I am currently reading "Have Gun will Travel". It is one of the many Whitman Publishing books that were kids stories based on various t.v. shows in the late 50's and early 60's. Last week I picked up old copies of "Zorro", "Annie Oakley" and "Combat"; to go along with my "Rin-Tin-Tin", "Sea Hunt" and "Roy Rogers". The stories are all hokey but it is fun to reminisce. They are sort of the book equivalent of junk food.

message 835: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) I actually could not finish In the Shadow of Gotham...just did not hold my interest...gave it 1 star. I'm now reading Nineteen Minutes as an easy read before I delve further into my to-be-read pile :-)

message 836: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Recently finished Patty Jane's House of Curl and really enjoyed it (4 stars), as well as Nineteen Minutes (2 stars). I've gotta take a break from Jodi Picoult books...the "doom and gloom" is feeling too predictable. Now I am reading Three Bags Full .

message 837: by Heather (new)

Thank you Heather for the recommendation...I'll definitely read it!

Richard O'driscoll | 3 comments I am reading "The silent and the damned" by Robert Wilson, it's a thriller set in Sevilla. I chose it because I read "A small death in Lisbon" by him and it was a brilliant read, and I am a Spanish teacher so I like the local colour. I'm not far into it but he writes well.

Caroline R | 2 comments Read 'About Grace' by Anthony Doerr , I want to spread the word .. and find out what others think too....

message 842: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Finished 8th confession by James Patterson. Think I'll give up on this series now this one was terrible. Enjoying chapter and verse by Bateman now.

message 843: by Ally (new)

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) ...I've just started [Book: The Help] by [Author: Kathryn Stockett]. I'm only up to page 28 but it's very engaging so far.

message 844: by [deleted user] (new)

The Evil Seed by Joanne Harris. I'm not a vampire-fic fan at all, but it's worth a try. I'm finding it expectedly silly, but in fairness, there isn't a dull moment.

message 845: by Donna (new)

Donna | 79 comments I'm reading the third Inspector Tejada, The Watcher in the Pine by Rebecca Pawel.

message 846: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) Finished reading Three Bags Full and gave it 4 stars. This author gets kudos for being creative and original...have not read a book like this one before. Who knew sheeps' thoughts and personalities could be so clever, humorous, and endearing! BAAAAAA-RAVO! For the long weekend, I am reading Darling Jim A Novel and Labor Day .

message 847: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) About to start Stephen King's Cell. It was last month's group read for the Stephen King Fans group but I'm behind so I'm only starting now. I got Joe's 20th Century Ghosts so I might just pick that up next and then read Night Shift (the SKF group read for September) and keep it in the family :)

message 848: by Cecily (new)

Cecily | 576 comments I've just finished another Ian McEwan, The Child in Time. At least as good as Atonment and Chesil Beach etc, but very different as there is more satire, plus a dash of magical realism. My review is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

I'm now reading An Unsuitable Attachment, the first Barbara Pym I've read since my early 20s. It's very good so far. Somewhat like what Jane Austen or Elizabeth Bowen might have written if they'd done so in the 1970s/1980s.

message 849: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments I am well into The Gargoyle and am enjoying it. The beginning was absolutely fantastic and so surprising and well written. I thought I was going to be reading a 5 star book but it has bogged down a bit for me in the first quarter of the last half. Crossing my fingers that it picks up back to the earlier quality and captivation.

message 850: by Carrie (new)
