Just now starting Rumo and his Miraculous Adventures by Walter Moers."

Yup. Same thought here. I am really curious to hear from someone who didn't care for In The Woods but read the sequel anyway - was it any better?

And I am finishing The lost art of Practicing His Presence It's about learning how to center oneself (the Quaker form of Zen Buhddism)

Please share your thoughts on Stolen Child vs. Book of Lost Things when you are finished. Book of Lost Things - what an awesome book that was!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 61 comments I'm currently reading The Calder Game by Blue Balliett. This YA mystery is the third in a series featuring Calder Pillay as the main character. Great little mysteries.

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments Currently back to Three Men in a Boat because I have never finished it and it isn't bad and well, I feel like I made it this far....

message 656: by John (new)

John Just started "Blind Lake". I haven't read any science fiction for years but I decided to give this one a try. It had been on my "to find" list for a number of years and it showed up in this years TC Book Drive (among the 450,000 books that were donated).

Someone sent me this link after I had finished this book and I wish I had had it while I was reading - thought you might like to check it out:

Kathy and Molly,

I have this book on my bookshelf at home. I'd love to know what you thought of it!

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Still reading Sleepyhead - Mark Billingham

message 663: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (sianin) | 453 comments I am still reading 20,000 Leagues under the Sea (out loud) and am also reading Anansi Boys because I did a quiz about what author is my soul (silly old facebook thing) and somehow I scored Neil Gaimon. I have never read anything by him so thought I should. So far its engaging although not something I would have picked up left to my own devices.

message 664: by Kipahni (new)

Kipahni | 144 comments Molly wrote: "please share your thoughts on Stolenchild

okay I wouldn't compare it to The book of lost things. In the book of lost things I felt the heart break and the magic- and loved all the characters vonerability and courage.

Stolen child is another book all together. While there are elements of fey that make it kind of magical I found it less fairy tale and more a question of trying to find out " who one really is" and "what does it mean to be human" It is still a good read, but I didn't feel as attached to the characters (but the author could have done that on purpose, highlighting the fact that the two main characters henry day and Aniday do not belong in their worlds)

message 665: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I have just finished Sleepyhead - Mark Billingham and found it weird. Not sure what to make of it now. I am now gonna read Hollywood Wives - Jackie Collins.

Ross Burton (rossb) | 1 comments One reason for picking up a new book - it looks interesting. I haunt second hand bookshops and have discovered some great reads; it's easier to take a chance on a book if it costs £1.50 rather than £7.99!

message 668: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Can I also suggest if you go to Facebook, there are groups on there that offer free books if you are 1 of the amount of books that they are offering. Its just an email with the title, author of the book and your name and address.

message 669: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 6 comments I'm reading "The Book of Lost Things," which seems to have gotten some good press here. I've picked it up a few times and then found it in the bargain bin section and couldn't resist. Made it to the top of my "to read" pile because I finished the second book in "The Mysterious Benedict Society" series (which is completely wonderful by the way, love children's lit) and thought it would be fun to follow it up with a book about a child and his own adventure with stories.

I have to admit, I cannot read this late at night as it gives me nightmares, but I have been very impressed with the writing and the creativity. Much darker than I anticipated, but I am very much enjoying it - especially the chapters with Snow White and the dwarfs. A little comic relief was much appreciated!

message 670: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Still reading 2666 unsurprisingly - up to the 3rd part. Also reading The shadow of the wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I'm a little disappointed so far after so many positive reviews. I'm on p190 does it get better?

message 671: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) Lindsay. I hope you love the book of lost things....hmmm...that reminds me, I need to re-read that. Maybe next after I get finished with Rumo tomorrow or so.

message 672: by Donna (new)

Donna | 79 comments I finished Snapshotby Garry Disher and really enjoyed it.

Now I reading The God of Spring A Novel by Arabella Edge. This books has received mixed reviews but I am about half way through and enjoying it. It is about the controversial artist Gericault and the creation of his famous painting, The Raft of the Medusa. A mix of art and politics in 1820s Paris.

Thanks, Shannon! I just took the quiz and got Haruki Murakami, which is funny, because I recently put The Wind-up Bird Chronicle on my to read list.

message 679: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (tracey1970) I am reading Don't wake me at Doyle's by Maura Murphy. I try and read my books in sequence along the shelf. It doesn't always work but I try because that way I read different authors and different genres. After all, variety is the spice of life.

message 680: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 6 comments Hi Heather, yes finished it and have to say I loved it. I thought the writing was brilliant though perhaps a little unnecessarily violent. Passed it along to my brother, but he better return it because this will definitely be one to reread. The last couple of chapters were just so poignant!

Maybe we can put it up for voting one month for a group read because I would like an excuse to dive in again.

Heather (hpduck) Lindsay - I am glad you liked it! I am currently re-reading it myself. I am still enjoying it. I am currently at the 7 dwarfs house. Love this part!

Lindsay | 6 comments Heather - I loved that part! A little comic relief there in the middle was a bit of a relief :) Happy reading!

Jamie, after finishing The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America, I will tell you that it is one of the best non-fiction reads I've come across. It is told in a narrative style, making it easier to absorb all the many facts and information spread throughout it. The juxtaposition of the enormous accomplishments of the Chicago World's Fair with the monstrous acts of the serial killer was carried out with perfection by Larson.

You never tell us why you're reading what you read - but the way you wrote this it sounds like after your bath you decided to read up on plastic surgery - which I'm sure is not at all the case ;0)

message 691: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) LOL, Molly I read The Beekeeper because I wanted a short book to read while I was relaxing in the bath. I wanted to read Nip n Tuck cos I was feelin down last nite and thought this was the best book I had to read so far.

message 692: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 6 comments I once read "Lolita" in the bath. It kind of creeped me out - not the best call on my part. I have yet to bring another book in there, which is a shame because books and bubble baths are such an excellent combination :)

Totally unrelated, but right now I'm reading "Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously" because I needed something light and fluffy after "The Book of Lost Things." I must say, so far a bit of a disappointment.

You must be a speedy reader - or take really long baths. I should learn to take luxurious baths with a book. I'm afraid I'd fall asleep and drop the book in the tub.

I love my 2hr baths as Ronan Keating says in a song (not sure which tho).

message 695: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Couldn't get into Nip n Tuck - Kathy Lette. Tried to read The Boy who taught the Beekeeper to Read - Susan Hill couldn't get into that neither. Now reading Succubus Blues - Richelle Mead which I am finding really good, not my usual kind of book. Need to read the series for the last book to be sent off in a swap and book 3 is awaiting at the local library for me.

message 696: by Ally (new)

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) I'm currently reading 'The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite' by Beatrice Colin. I'm really engrossed so far - its interesting to 'look behind the mirror' to see the German side of the war years...I'll let you know how it goes.

Heather (hpduck) I finished Darkly Dreaming Dexter yesterday and I am working on The Reading Group, which I am only about 45 pges into it right now, but meh, i'm not that keen on it so far. I just needed something sort of light and not too involved as my family is having some tough times... :)

message 698: by Molly (new)

Molly | 270 comments Heather - how did you like Dexter? I have that on the list and can't wait to give it a go - I love the TV series.

message 699: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1 comments I'm reading The Stone Diaries - it's for my book group. Also reading The Tenderness of Wolves after searching some reviews (and yes I liked the title and cover).

message 700: by Heather (new)

Heather (hpduck) I liked it quite a bit actually. The TV series follows fairly closely except regarding the romance between Deb and "Rudy". never happens in the book, but that's to be expected, eh? I enjoyed, but it wasn't amazing.
