Oh! Thank you! I've read Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in Historyand I really wanted to read Storm of the Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, since it has sat on my shelf for about 18 months ;)

Yes, I'll take it as a microhistory of AIDS.

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments I have changed my mind so many times on this task! I finally ended up with this - which I'm pretty sure should fit, but I wanted to check anyhow.
Just My Type A Book about Fonts by Simon Garfield
Thanks

Yep, that works.

Liora (chinquapin) | 0 comments Will Museum of the Missing: A History of Art Theft work for this task. I think it meets the guidelines for this task, but it is not on any of the microhistory lists you provided.

Looks like a great choice.

My Beautiful Genome: Discovering Our Genetic Future, One Quirk at a Time"

I'll take it. It seems to be a memoir, but the description makes it sound like she definitely makes the effort to put it into the larger social context and she's selected a narrow, "micro" focus.

message 114: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments I'm considering switching my choice for this one to The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements - I think this fits, but want to confirm before I commit.

Great choice.

message 116: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (robotwitch) Do either of these qualify: Pistols at Dawn by Richard Hopton and/or Leviathan by Philip Hoare?

Neither of those has clear descriptions, but they both look okay to me.

Joanna (walker) | 433 comments Dee wrote: "does The Purpose of the Past: Reflections on the Uses of History work? (i'm struggling with the first book I selected)"

Yes. Very meta -- a microhistory of history!

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments figured as much ;)

message 123: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments How about Mwf Seeking Bff: My Yearlong Search For A New Best Friend which takes the author's scientific attempt to find a friend and uses it to discuss the idea of female friendships in general?

Joanna (walker) | 433 comments Ashley FL wrote: "How about Mwf Seeking Bff: My Yearlong Search For A New Best Friend which takes the author's scientific attempt to find a friend and uses it to discuss the idea of female friendship..."

No, this is a personal memoir, not a microhistory. The author engages in a personal development project over the course of a year; she isn't really examining the history of female friendships or a specific friendship in the larger social context.

message 126: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (walker) | 433 comments Belinda wrote: "Would 1000 Best Wine Secrets work?"

No. That looks like a nonfiction book, but not like a history. The description does not indicate any effort to place wine in a larger social context or trace its history through time. Sorry.

message 127: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments No problem. I'm still going to read it though :=)!

message 128: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Galloway | 1077 comments I really enjoyed Brothel: Mustang Ranch and Its Women. The history of prostitution in Nevada was interesting but I really enjoyed the author's experiences when she was staying at the Mustang Ranch and the different POV when it was closed for good.
