It's great that you started this discussion! It's been a while since I read it, so I kinda forgot about it (never a good sign with a book).
I completely agree with you about the protagonist. Although, I also had an issue with Matthew. He was WAY too controlling and possessive for my liking and it irritated me that Diana just let herself be ruled by him. I think it would have been a more comfortable read for me, if they had a more equal footing.
Speaking of characters, did anyone else feel like there were too many of them? By the end, I kept forgetting everyone's names. I felt it detracted from the story.
I will no doubt be reading the next book, because, regardless of my dislike of the characters, it did have an intriguing plot.

I am disappointed to say that I did not love this book, primarily because I found our heroine to be a little irritating. I have read a flurry of books recently where the female character is so resistant to opening up to someone that it becomes a turn off to the story. The plotline was certainly interesting and I loved all of the magic, but her personality was just a major turn off for me.
