I gives a good insight into GH who may not have been a person you warmed to if you met her face to face.
Yet in writing she sparkles and I sure some of her is in herain female parts

No , not a warm and accepting sort of person I do agree and quite markedly snobbish and classist . But I sort of expected it , and she is not as bad as the in- person execrable Daphne Du Maurier whose biography I almost wish I hadn't read .
Like one of my favourite authors Mary Renault who despite being a life long same sex oriented person , hated and despised those she characterised by the 'L' word. Hated feminists too. Wonderful writer though.

Tina the book that is supposed to be the most autobiographical is her contemporary Helen. I don't recommend seeking that one out. One of the worst books I've ever read. *shudders*
I think there actually may be a little of GH in some of her heroes - most particularly Alverstoke (Frederica)

So she may not have been the most loveable person in real life. But I cut her some slack for how hard she worked & how many people she financially supported.

Tina | 75 comments I have never ever seen Helen anywhere and it is certainly not recommended. Comments similar to yours regularly come up.

She did seem to be the family bread maker
Not sure if the husband was much support
I think the young male hero in her crime stories are modelled on her som
