message 604: by Paul Douglas (new)

Paul Douglas Lovell (powerpuffgeezer) Paulyanna: International Rent-boy is an honest and frank portrayal of a working-class male prostitute’s life.

Many factors contribute in delivering the main character onto the streets. Some very typical, such as early abandonment, poverty, lack of education and sexual abuse. But Paul does not dwell too much on the past and refuses to allow these events to mar his ambition.

At eighteen a lost train ticket leaves him stranded in the city after a job interview. He uses his questionable wits to make a quick decision that steers him down a rather dodgy path.

Without added glamour or grit, Paul shares the raw accounts of his life as a rent-boy in the 90s, from London to Los Angeles. It may not have been pretty, and there was risk and danger as well as fun and thrills, but Paul had the audacity to succeed in his quest to obtain happiness, security and wealth.

This is not an erotic tale. It is an ordinary account of day-to-day life as viewed from a unique perspective. A peek into what really goes on behind the glassy-eyed smile of a male street worker. Read about his life in this optimistic and fascinating roadbook adventure.

John Dizon | 108 comments Here's the Amazon blurb for Destroyer (Abaddon), the latest novel by John Reinhard Dizon:

Richard Mc Cain is a retired Special Forces operative whose underground activities during the Tribulation Era of American history places him on the FBI’s Most Wanted list as the mysterious Destroyer. He is called upon by his ex-wife to rescue her sister from the tragedy of a “dirty bomb” terrorist strike in Mexico City. In doing so, he is forced to rely upon the Angel Train network of Christian activists spread across the country. The network, a major target of Homeland Security, absorbs the full force of the agency’s technological arsenal as no effort is spared to seek and destroy Mc Cain. In a series of supernatural events, Mc Cain realizes that there are even greater forces at play threatening his life and that of the beautiful Isabel. It seems that only a miracle can save him, and at last he finds the answer to the ultimate question: is God truly in control?

What makes Destroyer unique is the fact there is no Antichrist, no Beast or False Prophet. Rather, we find the Anniversary Attack of 9/11 resulting in a third-party Administration amending the Constitution to `forever separate Church and State'. The Organized Religion Act and the Hate Crime Act effectively ban all forms of proselytization in America and end all tax breaks for offenders. Churches, synagogues and mosques across the country are forced to close as a result. A `dirty bomb' attack in Mexico City creates a flood of refugees from across the border, causing the standardization of the Verichip as a foolproof method of identification for citizens throughout the country. The damage done by the terrorist attacks creates an economic recession sending millions into unemployment. The entire planet sees the War on Terror and the end of crime and lawlessness as a `final solution' to economic disaster and the prelude to world peace.

Enter Richard Mc Cain, an itinerant preacher turned vigilante who goes by the name of the Destroyer. His ex-wife contacts him in an effort to rescue her sister, an illegal immigrant trapped in the exodus from Mexico City. Mc Cain employs the services of the Angel Train, a transportation network devised by underground Christians operating under the auspices of the World Christian Society. Unknown to him, his movements are being traced by Homeland Security in an effort to bring him to trial before an international tribunal. Supernatural events underscore the spiritual war raging beneath the surface, and when Mc Cain is finally arrested and put through the ordeal, it takes a miracle from God to deliver him from evil.

The ethnic flavor of Destroyer adds to its uniqueness. Mc Cain's wife Agnes, her sister Isabel, and her children Sandra and Felipe are native Colombians who are deeply rooted in their culture. His connections in NYC are largely Puerto Rican, and result in a hit team from the Caribbean being called against him to speed his demise. His flight through Texas exposes him to the Mexican Mafia, called upon by other gangs to expedite his demolition. The scenarios are authentic and augment the taste of Americana found throughout Mc Cain's flight across the Heartland.

The gradual immersion of the USA into the darkness of the Tribulation gives us all food for thought. We can see how civil liberties are sacrificed for the security and protection of the many, and how global solidarity becomes the new imperative in a world effort for peace and stability. Suddenly the Verichip allows us all to become citizens of a world community, and religious fervor is eclipsed by a sense of international inclusivity that holds secular humanism as the greatest good. The newspapers and tabloids are slowly reflecting the prophecies of Scripture that will eventually bring us to the doorstep of the Tribulation. Hopefully books like Destroyer will help us delay the process, at least in our lifetimes.

Oops. For got to list the review for The Nano Experiment How silly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hang onto your hat for a hell of a ride..., August 15, 2013
By Joseph "Joe Perrone Jr." (United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: The Nano Experiment (Kindle Edition)

Writing a novel successfully from varying points of view is difficult enough (especially when the central character is not only that of a person of a different ethnicity but also one's opposing gender), yet that is exactly what author Richard Brawer has so successfully done in the Nano Experiment.

This fast-paced thriller tackles both the world of high-powered drug companies and the politically-charged issue of the death penalty with equal panache, combining the two into a riveting story.

Without giving too much away, suffice it to say that
Eileen Robinson, a middle-class African-American woman sentenced to be executed and Mark Chetney, a convicted serial killer, similarly destined, have more in common than one might imagine. To learn more, however, you'll just have to read the book, but I assure you that you won't be disappointed. I look forward to reading more from this author. Excellent job, Mr. Brawer.

Bailey James | 4 comments Transplant, a medical/techno thriller is available on Amazon, at select Independent Booksellers and all e-book outlets including Kindle, iBookstore, and B&N. 5 star rating on Amazon.

In this gripping, fast-paced thriller, Dr. Robert “Doc” Lamb, trauma surgeon, former Army Special Forces Intelligence officer and CIA covert operative, swore he would never go back to his former life—not after his wife, Grace, was killed in a car bomb meant for him. But when Dr. Greg Johnson—the Broward County medical examiner, and an old friend—asks him to assist with the evaluation of a mysterious John Doe found floating in the Intracoastal Waterway, he begins to be pulled back into the world he had deliberately left behind. Identifying the John Doe sets a complicated investigation into motion, one that seems, implausably, to lead from a topless dancer, to a local drug house stocked with black market anesthesia drugs which appear to have originated in the Middle East, and then to a medevac jet leaving the country on the night of the victim’s death. It also becomes clear the victim is one of many. The trail eventually leads Lamb to a private island in the southern Bahamas, to a stem cell research institute on a remote Caribbean island, and eventually to a hospital in the tribal highlands of Yemen. When he finds the clues are leading him out of the country, Doc turns to Isaiah Jefferson, his old CIA partner, confidante and friend for help. Doc had sworn he would never become involved with the CIA again, but as he probes deeper and deeper into the case—and as the dead man’s wife pleads with him to find out why her husband was killed, and who killed him—he feels his own overwhelming grief and guilt over his wife’s death driving him further and further into dangerous territory. In the process of gathering intelligence at the hospital in Yemen, he makes a grisly discovery -- one that explains everything. When his cover story starts to unravel, he begins, in order to escape and report his discovery, to recall and utilize all the skills he had deliberately buried along with his former life. Finding himself drawn inexorably back into the battle between good and evil on the world’s stage, he is also forced to confront—once and for all—the demons living inside him. Bailey James, an orthopedic surgeon and fifth-generation Floridian, was born in Tampa, into a family of natural storytellers. He currently lives with his wife on Amelia Island. His experiences in medicine over more than thirty years have provided him with a deep catalogue of characters and situations he mines for his writing. While continuing to practice orthopedics, he spends most of his time writing the type of thrillers he's always enjoyed reading.

message 618: by Paul Douglas (new)

Paul Douglas Lovell (powerpuffgeezer) A modern, entertaining, upbeat memoir

28 septembre 2013 Par S. J. Dagg

It couldn’t be better timed that Paulyanna: International Rent-boy by Paul Douglas Lovell has been published exactly 100 years after Pollyanna (by Eleanor H Porter) first hit the literary scene. And yes, Paulyanna, coined by one of Paul’s friends, is a clever adaptation of Pollyanna. Paul is Pollyannaish through and through. And that’s a real word – Pollyannaish. It’s in the dictionary. (Check if you don’t believe me!) It means someone who’s incorrigibly optimistic and upbeat. And that’s what Paul is.

Paulyanna follows Paul through early adulthood as he begins to make his way in the world. Emerging from an underprivileged childhood in the Midlands, Paul heads to London to take up his first job as a kitchen porter. He’s delighted to be in the city, where he’s free to be himself – to be independent and to express his sexuality. From portering he moves on to barwork and later a responsible job in the music TV industry, but increasingly he comes to rely on his alternative career as a rent boy to support him.

A character himself, with his strength of personality, slightly unconventional interpretation of the Catholic faith and strong belief in karma, Paul encounters some equally fascinating people along the way. Some are good, generous and sympathetic, others less so. Others, such as his friend Richard whom he calls his ‘partner in crime’, are a bit of both. He travels to Spain, Holland and America and his amazing eye for detail really comes into play here in his depictions of the appearance and atmosphere of the places he visits.

Drugs, streetlife, friends succumbing to Aids, loneliness – there’s a tough, gritty element to the book but the overall impression is of hope and cheerfulness. The Pollyanna in Paul won’t be beaten. As you read the book you’re rooting for things to turn out well for Paul who doesn’t ask for much – a settled loving life with a husband and a dog – so when the dark, handsome Michael turns up, you’re holding your breath. Will he be the one to cement Paul’s happiness?
The book is so well written. Paul’s style is easy to read, ranging from the poetic to the pithy. He’s a great companion through the pages of the book. This is a thoroughly modern, entertaining memoir that I recommend to everyone.

John Dizon | 108 comments This is John Reinhard Dizon, proud to announce the release of my new novel The Fury (available at Amazon).

The Fury is a supernatural thriller set in modern-day New York City that provides a historical subplot with a medieval European flair. Bridgette Celine, a private investigator, is hired to track down the daughter of Giovanni Rossini, a notorious Mob boss. Annabelle Rossini has made contact on the Internet with a fortune teller in East Harlem who offers her an opportunity to develop her psychic abilities. Bridgette is unable to refuse a huge financial offer and takes on a case that catapults her into a vortex of devil worship, drug dealing and murder.

Anna has moved into a three-story tenement run by Miss Goyette, a West Indian voodoo priestess who has rented the second floor to one of the most notorious crack gangs in Harlem. The third floor is occupied by Buda Sakumbe, an illegal alien from the Congo who rarely leaves the building. When he does, only its residents realize that horrible catastrophe follows in his wake. Bridge begins piecing the puzzle together, and she grows inextricably entwined with Anna in making her acquaintance and discovering the nature of her predicament.

Unknown to anyone but Mrs. Goyette, Giovanni Rossini is the descendant of a 16th century Italian nobleman who entered into a satanic pact with a French noblewoman. Their rituals of blood sacrifice ensure that their seed would establish an empire of vast economic and political power. Goyette has foreseen that the prophecy would be fulfilled through the bloodline of the Rossini Family and that of Bridgette Celine. Bridge becomes an unknowing pawn in helping Rossini make the connection with her family in New Orleans where the final link can be established.

The key to Goyette’s influence in East Harlem is Sakumbe, who is under a curse that causes him to turn into a hyena when a satanic demon called the Fury overcomes him. Goyette uses her mystical powers to control the Fury, which she can unleash through the force of her spells and incantations. The leader of the crack gang in the tenement, Kenya Kilmanjaro, has sold his soul to Goyette in exchange for control over the narcotics racket in Harlem. His exultation over his absolute rule is quenched as all of his rivals, real or imagined, are found torn apart by what authorities believe to be a wild animal.

Enter the Zombie Squad, an undercover NYPD black ops unit headed by Johnny Devlin. He crosses paths enough with Bridge to bring her in as an informer, and eventually they discover that Anna is being sent to New Orleans by Goyette. Bridge makes herself known to Anna, and offers to accompany her on the trip. They end up staying with Bridge’s cousin Rebecca, on whose property lays the missing link to the Rossini prophecy.

A mystical amulet is exhumed from the family graveyard and brought back to Mrs. Goyette by Anna. None of them realize that Anna’s life is required as a sacrifice to consummate the satanic pact to establish the Rossini kingdom. It results in a cataclysmic confrontation between the cultists and Bridge and her friends that the audience won't soon forget.

Pick up a copy as a Halloween gift!!!

Zack Love (zacklove) Hey Goodreaders!

My romantic comedy should become available on Kindle in the next day or so and I’m looking for reviewers.

The novel, "Sex in the Title," is a comedy about the misadventures of five male friends living in NYC (circa Y2K), with Milan Kundera-esque reflections along the way.

Here is a brief description:

New York City, May 2000. The Internet bubble has burst, and Evan's boss fires him with an email. The next day, his girlfriend dumps him, also via email. Afraid to check any more emails, Evan desperately seeks a rebound romance but the catastrophes that ensue go from bad to hilariously worse. Fortunately, Evan meets someone whose legendary disasters with females eclipse even his own.

To reverse their fortunes, they recruit their friends into a group of five guys who take on Manhattan in pursuit of dates, sex, and adventure. With musings about life, relationships, and human psychology, this quintessential New York story about the search for happiness follows five men on their comical paths to trouble, self-discovery, and love.

If you’re interested in reviewing this book, please let me know how your reading schedule looks.

Thanks!

Zack

But Jerry is there for another reason, too. A reason that Jessica can't even begin to guess at, but that will hit closer to home than she ever could have imagined.

For Jerry is not as innocent as Jessica believes him to be. Like his murderers, he, too, has killed--and he will stop at nothing to send those responsible for his death to the grave.

Aya Walksfar (goodreadscomaya_walksfar) | 23 comments Sketch of a Murder, Book 1 Special Crimes Team, is set in Seattle, Washington and written in multiple first person viewpoints.

A serial killer, self-dubbed The Avenger, is murdering wealthy, prominent men and the pressure to find the murderer is exponentially increasing on Governor Marleton. To get the heat off of herself and to ultimately take the fall if the killer is not apprehended, she establishes the Special Crimes Team.

The unit is comprised of misfits and loners, good cops who’ve ticked someone off and have been “invited” to join the team. Even as new as it is, the unit is considered the Siberia of law enforcement.

Lieutenant Michael Williams, a black man with a penchant for doing things his way, heads the team.

His second-in-command, Sergeant Nita Slowater, is a mixed blood Native American, and is pissed at the world. She hates Seattle, she hates the media, and most of all, she hates being part of the Special Crimes Team. It doesn’t help that Williams is in a constant state of PMS and riding her case hard. She’s not sure she could deal at all if it wasn’t for Molly the Pack Lady, a homeless black woman. When Molly dies she wills all of her artwork to Nita. Within the old woman’s art lies the key to The Avenger’s identity.

Can Nita forge a working relationship with Lieutenant Williams before an innocent man dies? Will she discover the key to the killer’s identity hidden in Molly’s artwork? And, ultimately, will she be able to accept the life-altering truths she’s learned about herself?

J. Lee Graham (jleegraham) | 8 comments All the TIme in the World.

In this third Andy Mackpeace time travel adventure, our bright, introspective main character, now fourteen, travels to Montana to visit his best friend Roger who has discovered his Cheyenne Native American roots. Andy has one of his grandmother’s incense sticks so that when they burn it together they expect to travel back to the Custer Battlefield… the day before the infamous battle. However, Roger’s history is inaccurate; they arrive in the wrong year, encountering, instead, a young Cheyenne Warrior on his Vision Quest.
Later, when Roger’s mother mistakenly lights the incense stick, the smoke sends the two boys travelling back to 1899…separately! While in search of Roger, for the first time in his life, Andy has to fend for himself against an extremely dangerous bully. He struggles painfully, attempting to navigate a world with few modern conveniences and where youth is short-lived. Andy finds himself on his own perilous Vision Quest and wonders if he will survive to return to the 21st Century.

Vashti Quiroz-Vega (vashtiq) | 14 comments Hello! My first novel: The Basement was released in August. It is a suspense/thriller aimed at an Upper Middle Grade/Young Adult audience.

“A kid shouldn't be aware of his own heartbeat”, he thought.

Never forget the unexplored territories in your own back yard, or under your house. Here, Vashti Quiroz-Vega gives voice to the young inhabitants of one neighborhood where things are more than they seem.

Robbie is an ordinary boy in a normal world, as we first enter the neighborhood and witness an idyllic scene of prepubescent children at play; but what happens in silence and in the dark will amaze you. Join Robbie as he journeys to explore unknown and forgotten tales of intrigue, fear and blind faith.

Ask yourself:

What kinds of monsters lurk in your world?

What will you do when you can no longer see?

The Basement is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, of treasure hunts and adventure, and of facing your fears. It is a focus on the small- but everything- world of one group of pre-teens and the very real and wondrous world they face.

The basement is available in paperback and eBook formats

Blurb:
What if looking at the face of the man you loved meant death?

Needing bloodstones for a jewelry commission, Mirianna and her father journey across the dreaded Wehrland where the beast-men roam. When their party is attacked, only the Shadow Man can save them. Strangely drawn to him, Mirianna offers herself in return for her father's rescue.

Living in the ruined fortress with the Shadow Man, Mirianna slowly realizes that a flesh-and-blood man--not a fiend--hides there in hoods and darkness. But are love and courage enough to lift the curse and restore the man?

Hello, everyone! I just released my new Christmas story, sequel to the best-selling Clara Claus, which you can actually read for FREE now on almost all e-book platforms!

This is the second tale of Jack Frost and the Snow Queen...

Nearly a year has passed since that fateful Christmas in which Clara became the Snow Queen, and everything is about to change...

Jack and Clara arrive at the North Pole to find it under attack by mysterious forces, and in the fray, the unthinkable happens when Jack is kidnapped by none other than Rosaline, the former Snow Queen. Rosaline has somehow regained her powers, and challenges Clara to a duel to win back her title. In order to prove herself worthy, and attempt to rescue Jack, Clara travels to Rosaline’s castle in the South Pole with uncertainty in her heart.

But, Rosaline isn’t the only villain on the rise. The chaotic Immortal Eclipse has returned, with plans that no one can decipher -- plans that include Clara, and the destruction of everything that she, and the Winter Council, hold dear. Aided by her new friends -- Gertrude, a flying pink reindeer, and South, North’s eccentric brother -- can Clara hope to overcome the impossible by defeating Rosaline, and truly become not only the Snow Queen, but also herself?

The second book in the Snowflake Triplet, Clara Snow is a tale of wonder, hope, and of discovering the truth of who you are.
