War of the Worlds

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Loved it. A great book that offers a rather disturbing insight into human nature and is more a social commentary.

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Read it and it freaked me out ! Had to watch the movie though, as I read it quite a few years ago and I couldn't grasp all the English back then. Will read it again if I get the chance :)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I've seen the movie with Tom Cruise... I should have known when they said he was in it that it would be no good but my mum is a big fan of the musical so will def give the book a go :o)

message 5: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I much prefer the book to any film version. Things are so much nastier in my head!

or less nasty depending on how much of a wimp you are...

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments The film versions (whilst both being quite fun) don't actually capture what Wells put into the book. This isn't just a book about an alien invasion (one of, if not the, first of its kind) it's also a book about humanity in the face of a catastrophe.

It's also kind of timely because Jeff Wayne has just revamped his musical version with Liam Neeson taking over from Richard Burton. Tickets are now on sale. All together now - "The chances of anything coming from Mars..."

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I've never managed to read an HG Wells before, although I have tried and couldn't get into them. That was several years ago so I've decided to try again with this one! I've just started to read the first few lines and I can hear Richard Burton saying them!!

:0)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I love Wells. The History of Mr Polly is excruciatingly funny. Just love it!

message 11: by Mark (new)

Mark Faulkner (markrfaulkner) | 464 comments This is one of my all time favoutite books and I've just read it again. Just as entertaining and insightful as I remember.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm all over the place with my reading these days. Can't seem to settle in to just one book. I have about six on the go at the moment, including this one. I'm at about 30% and I'm really enjoying it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just finished and loved it. Looking forward to the discussions.

message 14: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I still have to get round to reading the sample...

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments I have read it before, it is one that I am enjoying re-reading - & yes I can hear Richard Burton saying the words. Must look out my copy of War of The Worlds - I think it could be on tape.

I had it on cassette originally (stop laughing you kids!), but I played it so often that it finally stretched. It's now proudly on my mp3 player ipoddy thingy.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Right up to date on the technology terminology Darren. Wow - glad I don't have to actually say that!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh an APPLE product, Darren?

message 19: by Darren (new)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments The ipod plays everything that all other mp3 player ipoddy things plays and is a world leader in communications technology and looks cool. I have nothing against Apple. I also have nothing against the Ipad. I just note that it has certain deficiencies in certain areas (such as being crap).

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oiy you. It's not crap. I found a load of nifty symbols on it today! Check out the morning thread.

To be on topic...did I mention I finished War Of the Worlds and liked it?

message 21: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I hoping to have read the sample by the 15th... I'm currently reading the Road but am almost 60% through it now.

message 22: by Jud (last edited Dec 14, 2011 09:27AM) (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm going to the hairdressers after work so I am going to start this this evening :o) Never thought I'd get through all the group reads this month but there you go I've almost done it!

Not sure how much I'll like it cause I'm not into sci-fi and scary things like the imminent end of the world, but Steve has proven me wrong already this month with his book choice so here's hoping you do too Shaun! (I'm assuming you've picked it cause you posted first...) Darren

message 23: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments No, it's not my pick, Jud.

message 24: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments gah!

well I'll go find out who did pick it and edit my post so i don't look stupid...

message 25: by Darren (new)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments 'Twas I that picked this one. I wasn't allowed my main choice because of the stingy moderators (fair enough it is a bit pricey), but this is one of the books that I always go back to time and time again and there are only a handful of those, so I hope that it doesn't disappoint.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You know you can always put the other one in the recommended books section, lovely.

message 27: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments what was your first choice? I'm sure you are allowed to tell us, and to be fair the under £5 rule has been in existance from the very beginning...

I'm enjoying it so far, its not written in the way I was expecting AND I have pictures to go with some of the chapters :o)

message 28: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments 42% through and LOVING it!

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Just finished......really must root out my old copy (on tape) or ask for a new CD for Christmas. I remember watching the film that was all about the Americans panicking because they thought a radio play was real news. Can't remember what it was called (Darren probably would know)

message 30: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished too!!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I have the original radio programme somewhere.

message 32: by Darren (new)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "I have the original radio programme somewhere."

Is that the Orson Welles one that scared the living daylights out of America? That was really well done, though we're far too familiar with such things now to get fooled.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I've only read a few pages so far, but I keep hearing Richard Burton's voice in my head as I try to read!

:0)

message 34: by Joo (new)

Joo (jooo) | 1351 comments I appear to have this on my Kindle (I was obviously in a "must read classics" mood) I'm bored of the book I was reading, so I think I shall do this next.

I'm pretty sure I have the Jeff Wayne version on my Kindle too, but I might get a bit confused unless I get the instrumental version off my mate tonight.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm hearing it again now Joo! *deepens voice* "No one would have believed that in the last years of the nineteenth century.... minds immeasureably(each syllable carefully enunciated) superior to ours... etc etc!"

:0)

Yes, I need to dig it out.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Did I imagine that there was a film made of that radio programme panic?

message 38: by Mago (new)

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments 53% read and I'm struggling! It is certainly of its time, and I don't think it has aged that well.

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments Jay-me (Janet) wrote: "Did I imagine that there was a film made of that radio programme panic?"

Yes there was. I believe that it was a TV movie entitled the Night that Panicked America, though I stand to be corrected on that. I recall one scene where a father was about to shoot his family because he mistook the police lights for martian war machines. Only in America.

Isn't it sad the stuff I have in my head?
