Guenter | 1 comments My writing "carrier" began at 14 when in school. We had in German Lit. the mandatory "read a book and then talk about it next week" scenario. I had liked a few book at that time, but the "heavy Literature" I disliked because most of the 3rd or 4th place Characters in such stories always got the "bad deal". being next in line to read and make a presentation, I made a typical "Boring!" remark to my teacher. To which he replied:
"If you don't like what is out there, write your own stuff!"
As if it ever is "wise" to dare a Teen!
The other reason was, that I had an excellent history teacher! Someone who did not force one to remember dates of battles long gone bye, but to understand "why" such events in history took place. An incredibly gifted man! One of the few history teachers ever who had his class so spellbound that we "hated" to hear the bell sound the end of the period! He was responsible for me to understand that very often history happened because something did "Not happen, someone did not act, etc." that enabled the events that we call today "history". I also began to realize that History was written by the winner.
Seeing the differences between cultures, opinions and the likes all made me ponder the "What IF?" question. What if there would be a society that was untouched or unconquered by the powers of the past? How would such a society look like, behave and so forth if they would never have been touched by missionaries, conquerors and the likes?
Thus at 14 I began to write on this theme, which finally ended in the book "Tiny Eden".
Needless to say: The dare of my German Lit. Teacher backfired on him. My classmate who was always a person that spent 95% of his energy on figuring out how to launch the next prank, decided to use "My" book in his presentation in class. It worked! Everyone liked the story! All asked where they can get it. The one not fooled by this was my teacher. From that day on he became my best friend till to his death. he began to mentor me in my writing style, in how to develop a story and so forth.
Today's "Tiny Eden" is the matured product of those early attempts back at age 14.
