I could see why this book may have been banned back in the day, when segregation was still a major issue, but I'm not sure why it would be banned now. I think that it is important to learn about our history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. If we are trying to shelter the students in the classroom from hearing "certain words", then I think we are doing a poor job, since "that word" is in almost every single rap and R&B song out there. What is the phrase..."If we ignore the past then we are doomed to repeat it"??
Besides, the moral of the story is to step up and do the right thing, regardless of narrowmindedness and bigotry. I think that sort of heroism and compassion is an important thing to pass on to teenagers.
