Chapter 6 was about poetic broadsides. This chapter told us that it is sometimes difficult to activate AAmales' voices and move them beyond intellectual sterility or inellectual reticence. Using poetic braodsides, which are usually short and to the point, could break the impasse. Poetic broadsides have a number of characteristics so they are fairly easy to write. Some teachers challenge their AA male students to write poetry to stop one bullet, to stop on pregnancy, to stop one dropout, to bring one father home, to save one younger brother,or to....(have them fill in the rest). I really think this is a great way to help them release any anger or pain they may have. This is a way to show themselves and others that AA males know what is being said about them and how they are going to change it, starting with themselves.
