Chapter 5 was about choosing, creating, and mediating enabling texts. It was a very interesting chapter and I really learned a lot about choosing texts for AA males.Tatum talks of the two types of caricatures that you should try to avoid. One being the hoopster, fatherless son, and gang recruit. The other being the AA male who is scourned for being smart. Tatum talks about establishing platforms for literacy so that the texts encourage the readers to do a number of things like defining self, becoming resilient, engaging others, and building capacity. Another big part of this chapter was about reconciling differences. Teachers need to remember that there are differences between people. We need to face these differences and try to change the way they are seen. It is also hard to teach students who don't share the same culture or gender as you. Teachers need to rember this as well and do their very best to accommodate for different cultures and genders.
