Okay, so I'm Sarah, and I'm leading the discussion of Water for Elephants this month. I thought we'd start out as usual, with a progress and non-spolier thread to use while we're still reading. I'll add a spoiler thread in a bit, and I've got a few ideas for discussion after that which I'll introduce once we're underway. If there's a WfE-related burning issue you want to discuss, feel free to bring it up -- the more participation, the better, so don't be shy!

Who's with me so far? :)

I'll be reading it first. I wanted to read it before it became a film. This is going to be good and I can't wait to read it as a group :D

I started yesterday lunch time and since I've seen the film I knew when I should stop before I got hooked (if it was nighttime i would have kept reading).
Who's started?

Sarah (scheherazade) | 364 comments Mod
I started reading properly today, and I'm finding it really hard to put down. It's very vivid :)

I love the details of circus life. The whole thing is fascinating. 6% in and I was teary eyed. This is going to be a good one!

Ooh sounds exciting, I may start this next rather than Anansi Boys...

Kirsty (kirkel) | 1162 comments Mod
I've had to pause because my parents are visiting.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
I decided to start this today instead of Anansi Boys because I've wanted to read it for ages, then I can watch the film lol.

I've emailed those who voted for Water for Elephants in the deciding poll, so hopefully we'll have some more readers soon :)

Kerry Bridges | 121 comments I started reading it a couple of days ago, so I'm in when you're ready

A few of us have started, too, so feel free to add your comments when you're ready :)

Sarah - can you maybe think of some things to get discussions going? Discussion points etc.

I haven't finished reading yet, but I should have by tomorrow morning, and then I'll post my ideas on the spolier thread. I don't want to second guess what'll happen, that's all.

I actually finished sooner than I thought I would, so I've added my first impressions, and some questions/discussion points over on the spolier thread. No peeking until you've finished, though, I really don't want to ruin the ending for you!

My friend told me I shouldn't read this as it'll upset me - when you've all finished can you tell me if it will or not? thanks :)

There's a fair bit of human and animal cruelty, and a horse shooting. They were the bits that upset me.

My parents left today and The Mr has a Christmas night out tonight so I can get back to reading. I'm really looking forward to it - it's really wrapping me up in the story. I don't plan to read all of it tonight - I want to savour it.

A bit of violence towards humans and animals and an old man in a home might be triggers but it's well worth it (and I haven't eaten red meat for 20 years tomorrow).
