Still a good read. Maybe I even like the "Return" better. But this is the basis and it contains many good parts.
Wow, this is an old discussion! I just wanted to say that this is probably my favorite classic of all time.I do love Jane Eyre, but that would have to be my favorite love story.
I have to be honest and say that I think ERB's MONSTER MEN is my favorite book, at least of his stand-alone novels. I didn't read all the Tarzan books, probably no more than four or five. Might be time to start a discussion and group reading of PRINCESS OF MARS, considering the John Carter movie coming out later this year from Disney/Pixar.
Really? A John Carter movie? Wow! After all these years!I found Princess of Mars very good (did I give it 4 or five stars?). Gods of Mars was imho considerably less, but Warlords is the same quality as Princess again.
To get back to Tarzan: The first vbook was brilliant, of course. The second maybe even better, but 3 and 4 were not very good. I took a break after book 4 (Son of Tarzan).
Rene, you can find a trailer for the John Carter film online pretty easily. Interesting that the film appears to begin with Daryl Sabara (from the Spy Kids films and Polar Express) as ERB, then gets into Carter eventually finding himself on Barsoom/Mars.Looks pretty good and I hopes that it will lead to a series.
Thanks, I found the trailer om IMDB, after I read the former message. It looks good, and it will even be in 3D. Yes, let's hope it will become a series. Meanwhile I finished rhe third Barsoom book (Warlord of Mars), which I liked much better than the second. So, after a break I will continu with book #4 (Thuvia).
High Adventure, True Romance. It's the book that got me to like reading.
As a child I read the whole series though the first two are head and shoulders the best. I also read it to my children. Ten years old is about right to enjoy it the most. You have to be able to suspend your disbelief.
Tarzan, marooned on the coast of Africa, raised by apes, doesn't meet another white man until he's about 19. And who does he meet but his cousin who has taken Tarzan's rightful title and was also marooned at the same location.
