Ireen (rengurase) | 7 comments thanks, kuya doni!,

well, following this thread, what i do with my baby so that he will be a READER someday, is that we sit together and read books together (and i can see that my baby is so engrossed with the story hahaha). i guess you should start early to make your child a better reader.. pero for the adults, i guess, it should have started when they were little kids..(i learned to love books kasi yung nanay ko, binabasahan kami ng story palagi)..

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments That's the way to go Irene! Keep on doing that! She will not only end up a good reader but she will also be closed to you. Bonding moment nyo yan!

Very true, ganyan din kami ng daughter ko hanggang ngayon. We sometimes read to each other now that she's 14; she reads a chapter, then I read a chapter. It works, lalo na if we're really both interested sa book at pareho naming gusto maunang magbasa. :D

Tricia (triciuhhh) | 1752 comments Hi. My brothers are hard to convince to read but I am able to let them read my comic books and graphic novels. They want something with few words.

message 72: by KaiPea (new)

KaiPea | 74 comments Changing adults view on reading can be very hard and late, they've already set reading as a boring activity.

I suggest to influence the younger generation to read, but never force them. Read to them before bedtime or anytime, take them to bookstores, and buy them a lot of books to put in their room.

message 73: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (silentreverie) | 9 comments In my class there are about 40 of us, and I think only about 5 people are readers. And our school doesn't have these book clubs, so I made one.

I try to know what kind of books they like and I recommend books which I think they will like. So far I have happily *converted* (lol) two more students into an avid reader. We talk about books all the time and it's fun.

Wow, it's awesome that you can make book clubs in school! Sucks, I graduated already and I never experienced it :(

message 75: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (silentreverie) | 9 comments Oh, but it isn't really like the official book clubs, but my teachers thought it's a good idea, so I encourage my friends to read books :)

You graduated already? So how's it like now? What course did you take? :D If you don't mind. Is it hard?

IKR, it's really a good idea. When I was in High School, I was like the only kid (except those snotty kids from kindergarten) who stays a lot of time in the library, and nobody likes to read! So sad.

Yep, I graduated last year. I took up Nursing :D It's hard but it's harder to find or work for a living. :)

message 77: by Ivan (new)

Ivan (IvanBookworm) | 20 comments I have a friend who is not a reader. He always tell me reading is boring. During his birthday I gave him The Hunger Games. He likes action and maybe I think if I give an action filled book he may change his perspective about reading. After some week, I just knew he completed the trilogy and looking for more.

For me, for them to be encourage, they should like reading first. Like my friend, I introduced him in a book which I know he will like, and know he likes reading.

message 78: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (silentreverie) | 9 comments Yes, that is very nice, and the book that you recommended is in fact a very lovely book.

message 79: by Ivan (new)

Ivan (IvanBookworm) | 20 comments He actually complete the trilogy before I can. Because I'm waiting for the paperbacks as the hardbound cost a lot.

message 80: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (silentreverie) | 9 comments I killed my pocket and bought the hardbound ones. I've completed the trilogy, too. Feels great when no story is bothering you for weeks.
After reading though I admit it took me a week to get over it. Just a bit.

message 81: by Ivan (new)

Ivan (IvanBookworm) | 20 comments Well, the box set now is cheaper than buying the individual hb in the series. The same, I cannot concentrate on what I'm reading after I read the HG.

message 82: by javiruchi (new)

javiruchi | 59 comments 'discuss a poem. That's the best way. Target its insight (take note, it's not insightSSSS). Discussing figures of speech is a big NO; that's what most teachers do, kaya students tend to look at literature as a boring subject. To teachers, it's good when they have knowledge of creative expression like storytelling, it's effective (promise! I'm a witness >.<).

It starts with poetry, then to prose. Reading is a process... to be honest, nakakaboring talaga ang reading BUT, in the process, it eventually becomes a leisure/'pleasure' activity.

Reading is beyond entertainment, it HUMANIZES us. It makes us to be TOLERANT (of the people's shortcomings, behavior, etc.) and be BETTER PEOPLE. Kaya nga sabi nila, LITERATURE is beyond books, it's also Psychology,Anthropology, Philosophy...

Literature is madness to the common, but life to the enlightened.

message 83: by Christine (new)

Christine (diwataluna) | 99 comments This is a nice thread. :)

If we want to encourage reading, the habit should start at a young age. Of course, kids should be exposed to reading materials that are not just for school. My frustration has always been that there were no books at home and no reader in my family. (Now I've become a storybook-obsessed girl. Hello, Freud!) That's where the school library steps in.

A group called AHON Foundation gifts some chosen schools with a great selection of books. After meeting the org's head, I was inspired to start my own project called "Care for the Day Care." I want to help day care centers collect books for kids. But that one is still on the drawing board. So right now, I make do by giving books as gifts to my nieces and friends. :)

Tuklas Pahina (TP) | 1191 comments Hi christine can I join your Care for the Day Care?

Pamela (waterspout) | 8 comments Read The Hunger Games. It's a fast read and has a lot to teach people.

message 88: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) | 191 comments A better reader.
I just start on a simple children's book. Like Lion King, Aesop's Fables etc. Little by little, I started reading novels. Still children's novel like Heidi by Johanna Spyri. It depends on your interest. Sharing interest with your fellow mates, and simple discussions.
Books helped me on Vocabulary skills. Lumalawak din ang imagination ko. :)

and Changing into different genres, don't just stick to one genre. or whatever catches your eye.

Me & My friends sometimes have book discussions on break time. and book swapping. :)

message 89: by K (new)

K (ilikesunflowers) | 13 comments Read what is interesting to you, not what other people think is interesting. Don't force yourself to love a book and don't force yourself to hate one either.

Read what you love and screw the rest :)

message 91: by K (new)

K (ilikesunflowers) | 13 comments Tama naman di ba Po? :)

Maraming nagiging biktima niyan. Minsan kinakahiya yung librong nagustuhan nila. Minsan nagpapanggap na gusto yung mga Classic para 'cool'. Di dapat ganun.

Do I have any suggestions on how to make people a better reader?

Buy them kindles

Watch this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTN3s2...

Because less than 3% of you people read books.
Because less than 15% of you read newspapers.
Because the only truth you know is what you get on this tube.
Right now there is a whole, a entire generation that never knew anything that didn't come out of this tube.

A movie made 30 years ago that perfectly describes the situation today about television, news, and the main stream media. It resonates louder and sounds truer today that it did when the movie was made.

message 93: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (deprofundis) | 4 comments to be a better reader, read good books. if you read good books you will likely read more and more.. if you flick through crappy books, you learn nothing.. you get nothing good out of them and just end up hating reading... :p

read books that you can understand.. like one commenter here wrote, "nagpapanggap na gusto yung mga classic para cool". :p I love classic novels but I don't pretend to like them just so I seem cool. There are classic literary works that don't appeal to me because they are too pompously written therefore making it hard for me to decipher the message.

never read just so you can complete the reading challenge.. if you read only for the sake of wanting to finish a certain number of books then you unmercifully deliver each book its deathblow. read not as if you are in a race, for it is never a question of who can read faster nor who can read more. read to enjoy.. to be inspired.. to learn.. to live. ^^,

message 94: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Well said, Cynthia. :)

One thing that I learned since I started reading voraciously 2-3 years ago: the more you read, the faster you get. Fast does not mean not understanding but you just develop fast reading skills as you challenge yourself.

If you read slow, your brain adapts to your speed. If you challenge yourself by increasing your speed, you develop the skill of how to read fast still with full understanding and you also get to enjoy it: be inspired, learn new things and be able to live your life to its fullest! :)

Happy reading!
