Mary Sue means that they're plain and they don't develop at all in the story.
It also means that they're perfect and really clichéd. Like... hang on, I'll explain.Exhibit A: Isabella Swan
~First symptom of Sue-ness: Her NAME. I mean, really. "Isabella Swan"? I didn't think names could be cliché, but apparently I was wrong.
~Second symptom: All the guys want her, even though she claims to be "plain" and "ugly" and "not pretty at all" and all that crap. But oh, of course ALL the guys just fall at her feet, but oh nooo, she doesn't WANT them.
~Third symptom: Lack of character flaws. Clichéd clumsiness IS NOT A CHARACTER FLAW.
Exhibit B: Edward Cullen
~First symptom: Perfect physical appearance. This is self-explanatory, since Bellaphant goes into rambling detail about every single one of his body parts on every single freaking page. (Wait, that sounded dirty.)
~Second symptom: Perfect personality. He plays piano, is super smart, speaks a million languages, is devoted to Bella, loves her more than anything... it's like Mr. Disgustingly Perfect in character form.
~Third symptom: Lack of character flaws. Blind devotion to

Here's another thing: according to Google, a Mary-Sue is usually a character created by amatuer (I don't know if that's spelled right, but oh well xP) fanfiction writers. I mean, with Twilight, she WAS a beginner, but this is not fanfiction. Well, it should be, but it's in book stores, so apparently people don't think of it that way.
