I hated Beauty and Chalice, and I'm hating The Blue Sword. Not a Robin McKinley fan.

She's a very dull writer, I think; her books move slowly. I like more spunk.

message 9: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I read Spindle's End, but it took me awhile to read it and it wasn't my favorite. I did enjoy it though. That's the only book of hers that I read.

message 10: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
Hm, I liked Beauty. Didn't like Chalice. Blue sword, no. I haven't read. Spindle's end was beautiful. And I loved Hero and the Crown. That's when I fell in love. Pegasus, was amazing.

Robin McKinley, to me, writes like Paolini. Her story line sometimes seems so boring, but the pull of the words is inexplicable.

message 11: by Siareen (new)

Siareen | 1620 comments i read Hero and the Crown before i read Blue Sword when i was in about fourth grade. i have to admit that it took me a while to understand exactly what was going on :)
though they are not my favorite books i think i can safely say i like them and i have read them quite a few times since

mhm. To read Hero and the Crown you have to be a little more advanced in reading to really appreciate it (no offense to those of you who dislike it) As I've said before, it's kinda like how through out the Eragon books, I'd read them, and be totally engrossed and then finish. I'd look up and think, Gee, that was boring Except, with these books, I feel like there's more of a moral lesson.

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
That's an interesting take on her books. And Paolinoi's Klymy. I actually haven't read any yet, but I have Pegasus, Rose Daughter and Spindle's at my house lined up to read.

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
I have wanted to read the Hero and the Crown, but do you need to read the Blue Sword first? On her books page, it says it's (H&C) is #2.

message 16: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Those are depressing names for dogs (says the person who her family calls her the most morbid child alive...)

message 17: by Hannah, Don't TOUCH my Title Klymy. (new)

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
Lol. I know. Haha. That's what I was thinking. A bit off, but interesting. Like paranormal book titles.

message 18: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Yeah, it is kind of like that. I wonder if there is a reason for those names. It would be interesting to find out why she called them that.

Hannah wrote: "I have wanted to read the Hero and the Crown, but do you need to read the Blue Sword first? On her books page, it says it's (H&C) is #2."

Probably not. The Blue Sword was written first, but The Hero and the Crown is the prequel, set well before The Blue Sword, so I think you'd be okay to read The Hero and the Crown first.

message 20: by Arienna (new)

Arienna | 209 comments Out of all the ones you guys have read of hers, which is the best?

I have never read Blue sword, and I probably will never. it sounds silly. And too much like one mark Twain book I can't remember

Arienna wrote: "Out of all the ones you guys have read of hers, which is the best?"

I can't decided on one, Yenna. But Pegasus was definitely one of my favorites. I've read Deerskin, and Spindle's End, and A few others. But I can't remember the names

message 23: by Siareen (new)

Siareen | 1620 comments i read Hero and Crown first. it was cooler like that because you actually knew the backstory that was mentioned in the Blue Sword. [which is actually really different from HATC- as in, its almost like a completely different style.]

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
The Blue Sword is kind of sort of about Stockholm Syndrome, except...apparently it's a good thing?

I usually read books in publication order; I've always read The Chronicles of Narnia that way.

message 25: by Siareen (new)

Siareen | 1620 comments lol ya i guess you could say that. the main character falls in love with the guy that kidnaps her.
but he didn't kidnap her to hurt her. i dont remember exactly why he did but i think it had something to do with a prophecy of sorts. he's nice to her all the way through that they teach her things and she becomes some sort of hero. so it doesnt really feel like Sockholm Syndrome, but i guess technically it is :)

message 26: by anilee, "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion." (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 780 comments Mod
Because the kelar told him to.

I don't think the niceness or heroics or anything changes the fact that she was still kidnapped. She was still taken from her bed while she slept. Yes, it's a fine situation and all that and she ends up being happy.

It's still kidnapping.

message 27: by Siareen (new)

Siareen | 1620 comments ya, i guess. but its not like she was kidnapped and tied up and held in a dark cell and got Stockholm Syndrome you know what i mean?

message 28: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
Haven't read it! But it still sounds bad.

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments Should I read one of his books? Or is it a waste of time?

message 30: by Siareen (new)

Siareen | 1620 comments her books. Robin Mckinley is a girl....
and i dont think the two i read were a waste of time.

lol, im starting to feel like i want to reread them :)

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments oh.... i didn't really read the beginning.. and when i heard robin i thought of iron king where robin is a guy.... and robin from teen titans..

maybe i'll still try one.... which would you recommend as less of a waste of time?

message 32: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
It really depends on what you like to read. Deerskin was really slow and through out the book, I was thinking, "Wow, I have to keep reading," and then at the end I realize that that wasn't such a good story.

message 33: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
other books were good. Do you like faster books, or stuff like Eragon?

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments fast

eragon was good though.. i liked it a lot but i prefer fast

not too fast that it kinda skips half the story and its jumpy

i just watched The Company Men then Just Go With It then Grown Ups in a row... i am really tired

doing hw

What happened to complete sentences, Honey? ;)

Hey.. Just so y'all know, Dani doesn't like Robin McKinley!!!!! It breaks my book lover heart. Fortunately, I have back up. Anyways, did you know that there is going to be a sequel for Pegasus!!!!????

message 36: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I don't think I ever got around to reading Pegasus. I should probably do that soon.

message 37: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
I loooooved Pegasus. I just can't figure out why. It's slow, and somewhat dull. Nothing much happens in it, except that we find out the main character has a special talent, and Pegasuses like her especially. Really, quite uneventful.

Honey Hawthorne | 67 comments I TOTALLY FORGOT THE COMPLETE SENTENCE THING!!!

SRYYSYRYSRYSYRYR!!!!!!

Yeesh, Honey. Relax. I'm not going to kill you. Yet. Mwahahaha

message 40: by Hannah, Don't TOUCH my Title Klymy. (new)

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
Yeah I heard about the sequel. I started Pegasus but there was SOOOOO Much description and back stories and history it was driving me nutso!!! I had to take it back anyway so I never got farther than 100 pgs or so, but seriously. It took forever just to meet Ebon and stuff.

I mean it was sooooo dull. No offense Klym. Ill get around to it eventually, when I have the time

message 41: by Hannah, Don't TOUCH my Title Klymy. (new)

Hannah | 3223 comments Mod
the story seemed good though. Sigh. If there was less "development" maybe I would have gotten into it more.

message 42: by Katerina, Mother Gothel's Cake (new)

Katerina (klymene) | 2740 comments Mod
I know it was dull. That's why I said I was confused. I love, love, loved the book. But I can't figure out why. She's an amazing author that I love. But her books are soooooo dull. But I love them. Do you get what I mean?

message 43: by Hannah, Don't TOUCH my Title Klymy. (new)

Haha yeah I think I do get that Klymy.
