I think that there are great suggestions in this short section. As usual, I think that most of these techniques are much easier to implement in prosperous times, and almost impossible to get support for in lean times.

The Coding War Games sounds like an interesting idea on paper, but in practice I wonder how motivated most programmers would be to participate in something like this, especially on their own time.

Aleksander Shtuk | 84 comments I agree about War Games – it would be difficult to motivate programmers to participate, but on the other hand, as noted in this book, it could be an unforgettable experience for them if succeeded.

I like the discussion about Holgar Dansk effect. I’ve seen it in action, though success rate (per my experience) is not as high as desired in both small and large companies. Even if it gets huge and supported by many people in lower levels of organization, usually it requires some sort of “sponsorship” from higher levels. Otherwise, there is always “business need” and promises to bring it up on some high level meetings in future.
