Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments John, that website is too funny... This is why, when I worked retail, I did overnight stock. Got paid more and didn't see any customers except for the first hour on shift at Christmas time...

A (aarrghhh) | 32 comments Lol, Marsha! You'd probably stick around a while as long as you don't do anything too weird, or, you know, steal things. There are quite a few people on my staff that get the "ooh! distracted by shiny things" look on an hourly basis and I'm not always around to snap them out of it.

Seriously, I *heart* some of our customers. It wouldn't be worth working there without those people who come in who feel like we do about books--gotta have 'em! The ones who get excited about a new book coming out the way most people get excited when they hear someone's having a baby. (Which the author of that new book sort of is, but I digress.)

I just wish the people who clog up the toilet/leave trash lying around/break things and try to hide it/leave sticky fingerprints on and in the books/take 20 things to look at but don't put them back/steal stuff would *stay away* and leave us to enjoy our book-lovingness in peace.

/rant.

John, thanks for that link! My heart hurts, now. (from laughing, and also because people are lame)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I loved doing the morning shift at WHSmith and put out the new magazines and newspapers, sned back the old ones. Not ebcause og the customers, but most of the other people I ahd to work with. They were even worse. I have a problem working with people who don't feel like working, who pretend they work but don't, who influence my work in a negative way and who are rude to customers without realizing. I worked once with a 16 year old girl (thought she was older because she was working instead of being at school)who had been called in the managers office twice and had been called to two different team eladers to tell her not to have chewing gum in ehr mouth while she was working and not to chew with her mouth open in front of the people at the til! And she just kept going on. Or she would be reading magazines, hand holding the head and just take the money of cutomers at the till after she needed at least five minutes to realize someone was waiting!
How great the days were when she was ill!!!!

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments Not sure if anyone on here is from the Phoenix area, but I just discovered the best bookstore called Changing Hands in Tempe. There are new books plus used books at a cheaper price that are in great shape. There's a little cafe attached, they have poetry readings, author signings and interviews, can you tell I'm excited and wish I would've discovered it sooner!
And I totally understand what you are all saying about rude people. Makes me think of the comics line, "You can't fix stupid!" :)

Alycia (malfoyfangirl) | 22 comments 1) About customers... there is a funny line in the movie MALLRATS:
Brodie: "The customer is always right."
Shannen: "The customer is always an @**hole"
After having worked in retail over ten years, this rings so true!!!

2) I am lucky to have a good number of used book stores in the area, but they tend to be hit-or-miss. There is a fabulous children's bookstore not too far away and I love it! It reminds me of "Shop Around The Corner" another poster mentioned earlier, the shop from "You've Got Mail." They have the best selection of kids' books, and some great puzzles and games. I love going in there.
