Harlow A quick, enjoyable read. A page turner. Interesting characters. Another white woman saves the day. No desire to see the movie.

It's no Olive Kitteridge, Glass Castle, Cutting for Stone or Time Traveler's Wife . . .

I agree with every word in your post. A month ago there was a stimulating discussion with the same topic. Here is the link.

You will see there are many people who fully share your opinion.

IslandGirl Reads I thought the movie was good and very funny in parts. Dont knock it til you've seen it.......

Russell Brooks I agree with everything you've said except the part that it was ONLY the white woman that saved the day. Abilene taught Mae Mobley the right things, Minny helped by doing the "Totally Horrible" (or whatever it was called). It was a very accurate portrayal on how things were back in those days. I agree with IslandGirl, don't knock it until you've seen it.

Chill Run by Russell Brooks

Library Nymph I haven't seen the movie, but I read the book. I loved it! I couldn't put it down.

Harlow A friend suggested I read it. I find people either love or hate The Time Traveler's Wife. Specifically the time travel part (I found this clever and interesting. Others find it annoying).

It's one of the few books that made me cry.

I actually said "another white woman saves the day" and my tone was sarcastic. . .

Ana Sofía I actually loved this book... I don't think it's overrated at all.

then u havent read "my sisters keeper"

Alisha Gollihugh This book was not overrated! It was written from the perspective of Jackson Mississippi maids in the 60s Do you know how big a risk these women were taking trusting a "White Woman"?!? The "White Woman" didn't save the day now don't get me wrong she took risk too but if anyone ever found out what Minny and Abilene and all the other maids that came forward did they could easily be taken care of because when black people where hurt in Jackson Mississippi in the 60s no one even batted and eyelash!! I think you are failing to see the gravity of what this book was trying to portray.

I haven't read My Sister's Keeper. Someone suggested it. I haven't read any Jodi Picoult books.

Have you read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (non-fiction)? I read it awhile ago and one of my book clubs also read it. It's about the woman HeLa cells came from and her family. A different time in the history of medicine and medical research. Serendipity played a role in how the author learned about HeLa cells and came to write the book.

Exactly!!! I loved this book!

Alisha Gollihugh Me too!!

Nicole Gallant I believe the "hype" was overrated. The story was a good read but I fell victim to the "wow, you've got to read this book" hype.

I don't believe I'll watch the movie :)

Ana Sofía I think you should... the movie is really good, with Emma Stone as Skeeter.
