The angels were pretty entertaining! That whole scene was refreshing.
Each of the characters really drew me in too! Even though there are a few stories going on at once in the beginning, I got connected to each one.

I am having trouble with her tone, all that sh*tkicker, man-up, take no prisoners b.s. Somehow, it doesn't bother me quite as much in the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, or maybe I'm just getting tired of it. I mean, every single man in her books talks the same. No sensitive Beta heroes in her world. They're all biker gang wannabes, mafia types, or former Navy Seals or something. That's why Nigel and the rest of the croquet angel set were such a breath of fresh air to me. I'm assuming Adrian and the other biker/construction dude are angels, too, and THEY talk all that tough guy patter, too.
Sigh. Maybe that's what's not drawing me to finish it quickly. Some books I just can't put down, and this isn't one of them. Plus, it's Thanksgiving week, and I have tons, to do, but still.
And I agree with you on the lack of romance, at least so far. Maybe there's a bit more. I just read the diner scene with Marie-Therese and Vin last night, and that had some nice moments. But I'm asking myself, even if you're talking to a prostitute, do you really come out and say you were dreaming about buying her last night, but wishing she wanted you with out payment? It seemed crass, if he really is attracted to her. Also, isn't that the fantasy of every John? Why would Marie-Therese get an automatic warm fuzzy that he said that. I would think a real prostitute would be wary of statements like that.

I really like the 'heaven' angels more than the 'earth' angels as well. Granted, I really like Eddie, but Adrian is kind of of my -blah- meter. I think they are well done and the way they all get along with Jim was really good too.
There wasn't a lot of romance in this one, which bummed me out. I was really hoping for a bit more, especially because Marie-Terese was so cautious. I also agree on the dinner with the 'buying you' thing. Personally, IF I was a prostitute, I would have been very wary and skeptical about the whole dinner. Most people don't treat people like that and it was strange.
But when I look at the story as a whole, I think it was very well done and very enjoyable. Not every book is going to be a winner, and maybe we're on different levels (cause I personally LOVE paranormals and am still going quite strong--yes even the vampires lol) But again I haven't read as many books as you have and there are still a TON of authors out there I want to try.
This book was easy for me to put aside and leave alone, but I forced myself to read it cause I have other books I gotta get to before the month is up. XD I felt like there was a lot going on at times, and at others I felt like key feelings or reactions were missing. But overall, I enjoyed it. I might wait a while before I grab the next one. It just wasn't one of my "OMG MUST OWN" type of books.

If you haven't read many of J. R. Ward's Brotherhood vampire books, they are like crack. The first four or so have lots of romance in them, but action subplots, too. The latest one had more action than romance, but I still liked it. My favorite one was the one with Zsadist - Lover Awakened, the third in the series. Lots of angst for our hero!
As I was reading, I was thinking how I enjoyed watching Soprano's and the like, and the banter there, but I wasn't attracted to them like I expect to be to the hero of the romances I read. I gravitate more to the intellectual dukes in Regencies. Give me a reformed rake as my bad boy over a biker thug any day.

I'm only in chapter 4, and I like it so far! Loved that the angels were in "whites" and playing croquet. Nice change from everyone wearing sh*tkickers like in the Brotherhood!
