Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments yes. Try pressing your Command Key and the letter F. I think a box will open upper right. You can then type in any search term. It will work on any web page.

YES!!!! that worked. Thanks for teaching me how to use my computer! That should help a lot.

message 408: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 2651 comments Can you also find a translator for Season of Migration to the North, and, The Wedding of Zein ? I doubt he wrote in English since other works DO have a translator... but none listed on GR for this one.

Found this on the African Books Collective:
"Alain-Joseph Sissao was born in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. He is a researcher at the Institute for Social Sciences at the National Scientific Research Center in Ouagadougou. He studies both the oral and written literature of his country and is engaged in several research projects on burkinabè culture."

I noticed that the sentences are in present tense, which seems to indicate currently living. Otherwise, I did not find anything. Perhaps someone else?

Turns out that I was only able to get The Wedding of Zein from the library....and GR doesn't have a translator for that one either. The book I have lists Denys Johnson-Davies as the translator of Arabic to English.

Owlette | 706 comments GR's record for poet Saint-John Perse says he was born December 13, 1901. However, that date is at odds with the websites that I checked for information about his birth and death. All of them said he was born in 1887 and died in 1975. Websites:

I have corrected his GR profile and we will fix our database as well.

It's worth noting that we will not go looking to see if the GR record is incorrect, so if you know this before posting, it can save everyone extra time.

message 417: by Owlette (new)

Owlette | 706 comments Thanks for fixing his year of birth. His birth day was May 31 (GR has December something.) I will pay closer attention to GR's dates vs. outside sites next time.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Owlette wrote: "I will pay closer attention to GR's dates vs. outside sites next time. "

Please do. If GR has the information, we use it, rather than go looking around. We keep a database to help us with score keeping, and the info gets used for all the extra points available. And then the info is there if someone else reads a book or an author in another season, so we don't have to keep looking up the same information over and over.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I’m reading Muriel Spark’s auto biography, Curriculum Vitae: A Volume of Autobiography . This is the edition on the cover of The that I downloaded from Amazon. They also sell the hard copy of this edition and both give a page count of 224 pages. But the MPE for GR is 12 pages! All the other editions listed on GR seems to be at least 200 pages. Believe, I am well past 12 pages on the edition I downloaded. Even past 112 pages! Can’t I count this book. When I was reading about the 12 page edition, it said photographs. Could it possibly just be a book of photographs from her life time?

Corrected page count to 213. It was from a bad import, and yes, apparently there are 12 photographs in that edition.

It is this edition:

The Purity of Vengeance with 500 pages. Way to go, Valerie, the shortest Jumbo possible!

Gabriel Soll Not sure how to approach this one, even the correct question to be asking.

I just learned of a government publication covering the history of the site where my job is located (a former mental institution). I have found a PDF (about 300 pages) but no ISBN or available print publication. Here is a link: http://stelizabethsdevelopment.com/do...

Is this claim-able? Add-able? Not sure what I should do. Please advise.

...would it still qualify for RwS?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Gabriel wrote: "...would it still qualify for RwS? "

No, only books on Goodreads qualify for RwS. Goodreads wants to have every book ever published, and I would be happy to add it if it were allowed.

Fair enough. I might be able to do some digging to get the info needed to be added...other than an ISBN, what should I try to get?

Get me what you can, and I'll ask in the librarian's group if it can be added. GR is a book site, and I think this might not work anyway, but I'd be willing to look further if you have more info.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I’m having a hard time finding the publication and page length of Dawn by Harriet A Adams. The MPE has 0 pages under kindle. I looked at the other editions none are published before 2000, yet this edition states it was a pre-1923 published book that is found to be culturally important enough to be brought back into print. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Then I tried to read the bio of the author. There is no info on Goodreads about here. When I used a search engine I kept getting referred to a Wikipedia site for Harriet Stratmyer Adams who was part of the publishing dynasty that produced Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. On Amazon, there is a bit of a free excerpt that sounds nothing like style of writing in 20th century and I saw Stratmeyer Adams wasn’t born until 1892 and died in 1986. I also got referred to pages about Harriet Adams in family trees on Ancestry.com and an explorer named Harriet Chalmers Adams. I tried searching with title of book with author’s name and found this https://www.bookdepository.com/author... that shows another title by her that was published in 1865. Looking this up on Amazon, I found another book with her as author https://www.amazon.com/Womens-Jureniy...
Using that title and author I found this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adams..., going past the “games and novelties “ you see this company lists her as one of their authors of one of the titles. Goodreads says Dawn is based in Boston and this company is based in Boston. The man who runs the company is named John S Adams but can’t find more about him. It appears the company was only in operation from 1860’s to 1880’s.

Anyway that’s my exhaustive search and the clues I have found. One version of the DAWN at book-depository says it is a 2 volume set. So what will you give as a judgement on pub date and page count?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Rebekah wrote: "I’m having a hard time finding the publication and page length of Dawn by Harriet A Adams. The MPE has 0 pages under kindle. I looked at the other editions none are..."

This is the MPE: Dawn with 296 pages, published in 1868. I had to fix the author name who didn't have a period after the initial, for one thing. When there are print editions, the kindle will never be the MPE. But always feel free to ask.

Bryony (bryony46) | 247 comments Could anyone help me with a question about The Riddle of the Sands please. Goodreads shows the original publication date as 1902 but I have seen many references to it being published in 1903, for example:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/200...

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/books/wha...

Is it possible the Goodreads record is wrong, and if so can it be amended? Thank you!

Edited to add: the preface to the book also seems to list a 1903 publication date. It’s on Project Gutenberg here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2360/...

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Bryony wrote: "Could anyone help me with a question about The Riddle of the Sands please. Goodreads shows the original publication date as 1902 but I have seen many references to it being published ..."

Yes, changed to 1903. Another member had changed it to 1903 back in 2015, but the system at that time picked up the date of the oldest entered edition. There was an ebook which gave a 1902 date. (And how could that be?).

I cannot verify the page count for the MPE, and we will have to use this edition: The Teahouse of the August Moon, which has just 94 pages. This is consistent with other editions, other than the hardcover.
