Ouch yeah, I couldnt read off a laptop either. I hate reading on tablets as well (have an ipad and an android tablet). I only read on my kindles.

Terri | 19576 comments I have to mention, (and it goes along with what Bryn was saying about eReaders and religion and conversion)..many people find comfort in Packing many books, so when they travel they don't need to eRead. They are quite happy to carry 10 books. And some people even find used book stores where they are on vacation or whatever, and trade for new ones.

It definitely comes down to what you like and what your habits are.
Just like our taste in books, different things work for different people. Some people exclusively read ebooks and can't stand to read paper. Then others, like me, it is the other way around. Some people have no problem reading on a screen and would do it part time or if they had to, but they simply like the feel of books and choose to go with them.

eReading or paper books, it is a decision made on personal experience and likes and dislikes. Dependent on the individual.

I love my Kindle for it's practicality... but you prise my paper books out of my cold, dead fist. LOL.

You really carry two full sized books with you everywhere you go? I would find that so cumbersome and annoying! While you can do the same with print books, it's much more convenient with an ereader, they are so much lighter weight and smaller than 2+ print books.

Bryn wrote: "Kindles work for the indecisive reader, who has no idea what she might want to read on the trip home, or who needs to try five before she settles."

There's plenty of other benefits to an ereader. I usually know what I plan to read next so I'm not indecisive yet there are many, many reasons I love my Kindle.

Terri wrote: "As many of you know, from chatting to me around A&M and from my posts throughout this thread, I havea Tablet and the ability to read an eBook on that Tablet. I tried it a couple times and hated it...."

Reading on eInk is entirely different to a backlit tablet. If you haven't tried eInk, don't rule ereaders out completely.

Cool! :-)

May I ask which browser you use? I use Dolphin and I find I can't add books via the new green 'Want to Read' button on GR. I can add the book to Want to Read, but the drop down box appears and it won't let me tick any of the shelf boxes. It just closes the whole drop down box.
This happens in Dolphin, the stock browser, but isn't a problem in Opera.

Terri | 19576 comments For me and digital it isn't the fact that I am reading on a backlit screen (Tablet) that makes me dislike eReading. It is reading on a screen of any kind.
eInk, backlit, laptop, tablet, kindle etc.. it is the act of reading on a screen that I hate. I need to hold a book and feel it and smell it and turn a page and put my bookmark in it. :-)

I dont really use my tablets anymore, I use my macbook pro. But for the tablets I found chrome to be the best.

As for the ereader vs dtb, for me its all about the story, not feel or smell of what the story is written on.

I'm not carrying around a couple hardcovers, just regular paperbacks. :) They fit in my purse.

Still, compared to a Kindle, it would be annoying to me personally. Even before my Kindle, I wouldn't have carried around more than one paperback.

This is my Kindle on top of 2 regular paperbacks, look at the difference!

I agree. I tried to read a book on my laptop and it drove me crazy because everytime I stopped, it went back to the beginning. I love my Kindle and I love paper books too. The Kindle is a blessing in so many ways, like already mentioned, takes up so little room in my purse, easy to hold with my arthritic wrists, and holds a lot of books in a small space. Right now reading "In a Dark Wood Wandering" is hard as it is very heavy and is hard to put on the shelf when I am not reading.

The majority of limited time freebie promos are self published in my experience but some are from small/independent publishers too. I use www.ereaderiq.com - it lists all freebies so you do have to do some weeding, but you can narrow down by genre, which helps. And you can check out price drops or add books to your own price drop watch list.

Richard Coady | 47 comments I never thought I'd like reading on a Kindle. For pretty much all of the reasons that I've read about in this thread. I genuinely thought I was going to hate it, and then I bought myself one for reasons that I won't go into here.

And I loved it. And then my wife got a look at it and I didn't get anywhere near it for the next three weeks, so I bought another one.

Now I'd have to say it's the best piece of technology I own. It does what it's supposed to do, apart from a couple of little bells and whistles that nobody uses. You read books on it. If it was an Apple product it would have a fancy web browser and a load of pointless games and video phone calling on it that would just get in the way and take up storage space.

None of that with my Kindle. Just books. Glorious.

I'm amazed at the book categories out there. I was recently looking through a list of book reviewers and found one which said:

Genres I review: Paranormal romance, urban fantasy
Genres I do not review: Amish romance.

Wait, what? Amish romance? Is that a thing?

message 235: by Chris (new)

Chris | 419 comments Banshee, with New Zealand actor Antony Starr is currently showing on the Soho channel of SkyTV in NZ and the town it is based in has a large Amish community. So far the exAmish businessman is the centre of most of the criminal activity in the town and there is a great deal for such a small town, and a very conflicted Amish girl is a main contributor to the shows R rating for sexual conflict. It may not be a romance in this case, but it just goes to show that whatever deviant ideas we think of chances are someone has written or filmed it somewhere!

On a more respectable note I've seen a series of mystery novels where the main character is a woman sherif in an Amish town, but can't remember the author.

I love the feeling of sitting and reading a good long paperback, the smell of an old book and the touch of the pages under my fingertips. At the same time I travel a lot and with the crack down on the weight you can have in luggage these days it just isn't feasible to carry a stack of novels with me, however my iPad can hold a great plenty of my favourites

Ereaders would be indispensable when travelling.

Running a farm, we never get away on holidays anymore, (no more than a weekend if we do get away) but if I did, I would have to get used to reading on an eReader so I could take books with me.

message 246: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Just take the paper books, as you read them you leave them behind and fill up the space with souvenirs.

No need for an eReader just for vacation. Now, as a new tech toy to play with?? That's a whole other matter. :)
