10.1 As You Like It: Goodreads is now providing recommendations based on the books that appear on your shelves. Let's see how well they pick books! At the top of your Goodreads home page, click on the label that says "Recommendations." Choose a shelf listed under the heading "Recommendations by Shelf" and read a book that has been recommended to you. Required: Identify the shelf you used when you post. How did Goodreads do picking a book for you? Did you like it?

10.2 Here, There Be Dragons: January 16th is Appreciate a Dragon Day. Read a book that features a dragon, has the word "dragon" in the title/subtitle/series title (plurals, possessives, or compound words containing "dragon" work, too), or that has a picture of a dragon on the cover.
Examples: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Dragonflight, Eragon (The Inheritance Cycle, #1) by Christopher Paolini
This list might help, too: Dragons

10.3 The Winter Blues:The cold, dark days of winter can get people down. Read a book with a cover that is mainly blue, white, or the black of night, or a combination of any of these colors.
Examples: Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate , Night Road by Kristin Hannah , 1984 by George Orwell , Beastly (Kendra Chronicles #1) by Alex Flinn

10.4 It’s Summer Somewhere: Let's warm up! Read a book that is set in the southern hemisphere or one that takes place during the summer. These maps might help: Hemisphere Map, African Map, South American Map. As long as part of a country is in the Southern Hemisphere (ex: Kenya, Columbia, Brazil, etc), it can be used for this task. Required: State how the book fits the task if it is not obvious from the Goodreads description.

10.5 Can't Wait 'Til Spring! Get ready for spring by reading a nonfiction book about gardening, a novel featuring a gardener, or a book with a flower (or flowers) on the cover.
Examples: Organic Gardening, Pushing Up Daisies, The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen , Bed of Roses (Bride Quartet, #2) by Nora Roberts

10.6 Peace Memorial Day On February 28, 1947 an anti-government uprising known as the 228 Massacre took place in Taiwan. This tragic event is now commemorated annually as Peace Memorial Day. For this task read a book with 228+ pages or a book set in Asia. A majority of the plot or the subject matter should take place within the Asian Continent Examples: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Sky Burial, Bangkok 8, Someone to Run With This resource may help: Asian Historical Fiction

10.7 - Same Place, Same Time...Same Books
The Place - Goodreads. The Time - Whenever is convenient for you. For this task you will need to discover who is visiting Goodreads at the same time you are and what they are reading. Go to Online Now … click on page 1,2, or 12 and select one of the books that these fellow Goodreaders are currently reading to read for this task. You can visit the pages as often as you like.

10.8 - Quiz Me

Kathy (kdcraterattnet) | 116 comments 10.4 pages 427..."The People of the Mist" by Henry Rider Haggard...What an unbelieveable adventure-a cross between Indiana Jones and Mighty Mouse. Two brothers left penniless seek their fortune in the wilds of East Africa. One character, Otter, an African dwarf befriends the brother as they search for the beautiful red and blue stones of the people of the Mist (A lost colony of savages)This is not a fast read but it is entertaining and suspenseful. It was quite a surprise to find out this novel was written in 1894.

Kendra | 3 comments 10.3 Pages 420..."Passion: A Fallen Novel" by Lauren Kate...This is a really awesome series especially if you were into the vampires when they were such a big hit. Now it seems like "Fallen Angels" are our next big thing! Fallen, Torment and Passion are all novels that I recommend for all the die-hard Twilight fans. Even though it doesn't deal with Vamps it still has your love story that doesn't seem like things can work out as the main character Luce feels it should. My favorite quote is on the back of the book asking the question:"What if you find your soul mate...at the wrong time?" It's a pretty fast read and can get a little confusing with the time travel but each chapter helps you a little to figure out exactly where and what time period you are in.

Lynn | 203 comments 10.4 IT’S SUMMER: Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary: 1 & 2 Corinthians David W.J. Gill / Moyer V. Hubbard (166 pages)
I call these “Kindergarten Commentaries” – they contain hundreds of excellent full-color photos, graphics. maps, charts, and timelines that depict the real-life setting of the New Testament. Relevant historical and cultural insights provide an added dimension of perspective to the interpretation of the words of the Bible.
These commentaries, along with Warren Wiersbe’s “Be Series”, have become the study guides for my prayer group’s Bible study.

Lynn | 203 comments 10.5 CAN’T WAIT ‘TIL SPRING!
Texas Gardener’s Resource Dale Groom/Dan Gill (272 pages)
This is the first book I reach for when I need answers to a gardening question. The plants highlighted are known for their hardiness in Texas. Each entry includes a color photo, information on planting and care, pests and diseases, and landscaping ideas. Simple to understand icons are used to indicate sun and water preferences. Additional icons are used to indicate benefits such as attracts butterflies, native plant, or fragrance. Monthly garden maintenance advice for each of eleven plant categories is included. Well organized, with a simple layout that makes it easy to locate information with minimal effort.

Were you associating the setting in the Bible with a warm place ... Middle East? I'm not sure what the setting is in Corinthians .. I'm guessing Israel

Lynn | 203 comments 10.3 THE WINTER BLUES
Murder in the Vicarage Agatha Christie (288 pages) (Move from 20.1)
Agatha Christie is one series I haven’t read. I enjoyed the book – I’ll definitely read more. It would fall into my “no thinking required” category” (which is where a lot of my books choices have been coming from lately!)

Murder at the Vicarage (Miss Marple #1) by Agatha Christie There is a lot of black on this cover ... I think the library's copy is missing the dust jacket and the whole cover is black.

message 15: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 203 comments 10.3 - That is true - no dust jacket

I found that a 365KB file is equivalent to 58 pages as a pdf. Does that sound right? What task does this book go with anyway?

message 18: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (kdcraterattnet) | 116 comments 10.3 pretty dismal winter grays and black. And what is 58 pages of pdf worth?

Well since a pdf page is about the same as a regular sheet of copy paper, I'd double it and say the book's pages average 116 (10 bonus points)

I figured this out by looking at the pdf page count for "Old Man and the Sea" and comparing it to the print page count.

Lynn | 203 comments 10.4 It’s Summer Somewhere:
Left to Tell Immaculee Ilibagiza 215 pages
The inspirational story of Immaculee Ilibagiza’s journey threw the genocide which took place in Rwanda in 1994. How is it that the Rwandan Holocaust took place less than 20 years ago and I can't remember it? My eyes were opened to the harsh realities of this terrible event. Even though the genocide was terrible and horrifying, this book is more about forgiveness than hate. Immaculee did a wonderful job telling her story of survival and how she came to know God and find peace amidst the Rwandan storm.
It's hard to imagine that we live in a world where things like this happen, and we don't tune in or send help. This book was wonderful. I was amazed at her continuing faith and her willingness to forgive and love. It inspired me to serve more willingly, to be more informed, and to continue to put my life in God's hands. Her story, even for a nonbeliever, is an inspiring tale and a stunning demonstration of the power of her faith. (Rwanda is just south of the equator)

I want to read this book .. I was appalled by the violence when I read stories about this in Say You're One of Them .... Basically the hatred begins by not accepting differences of others.

10.6 Peace Memorial Day
Tuesdays at the castle pgs 232
Jessica Day George
Tuesdays at the Castle
This book was about a princess who saves her country and her magical castle, that seams like it has a mind of its own, when her perants are ambushed and thought killed.
I liked this book because it was mysterious and exciting, and would definitly read this again if i had the chance.

Lynn | 203 comments 10.6 Peace Memorial Day
228+ pages: The Good Sister Drusilla Campbell 334 pages
Roxanne has taken care of her little sister, Simone since she was born. Simone ends up in court and eventually a mental hospital, a victim of learned helplessness and postpartum depression.
It is a really good examination of the pitfalls of trying to *protect* someone from feeling the consequences of their actions.
Excellent research concerning postpartum depression by an author who had experience in the area as a daughter of a mother with this problem.
