Sorry to hear that Jex, hope you feel better soon.
Sorry to hear that Jex, hope you feel better soon.

Since my book, "The Werwolf on Eagle's Nest Mountain" has quite a bit of World War II history in it, I've been setting up at military shows around the area and selling/signing books for parents and grandparents to buy for their kids.
Also, since much of the action in it is snowboarding and skiing related, I've got the book for sale at one large ski hill (and soon another, I hope) where the proceeds go to the adapative ski program.
Other forms of promotion I've been doing are the usual that most authors seem to do: free giveaways, consignment at independent book stores, online social media including video book trailer, testing different price points, donations to libraries, and, next Spring, setting up a table at a book festival.
Congratulations to all of the self-published authors out there (and those working towards that goal)!

I don't know how this would work with other genre, but I started a blog called English Historical Fiction Authors. http://englishhistoryauthors.blogspot...
I invited other authors of the genre/subgenre to join me, and we have one or the other of us post each day about England. It has been a huge success. We have had 7411 individuals visit as of today since our opening on Sept. 23rd. We have a Books page listing our English HistFic, an Authors page with bios, a weekly giveaway featuring one of the authors and a few other things, besides the daily post. We also started a Facebook group to handle blog business, one to share our posts with the public and one to PROMOTE EACH OTHER. (Any historical fiction authors who wish to join the promo group are welcome. That genre only, please.) Just contact me.
We also have a Goodreads group, Historical Info for Historical Fiction Readers, to help readers to know a bit about the historical era their books are set in. Anyone is welcome to join that group and our public FB group.
Anyway, I think this could be done in other genre with some serious thought given to it. Sci-Fi writers could, for example, do posts on outer space, the earth's core, etc. and some posts could be short stories.
Just some ideas you might want to kick around with like-genre authors.

I organize book blog tours for YA authors. A book blog tour is a great way to promote your book on several blog sites. If you are interested in finding out some more information, please feel free to message me or email me at yanovelreader@gmail.com.
