Rachelccameron wrote: "For 20.10 Sam's Task, Can the published year have more than one "1" or "2"? (ex. 1922, 2011)?"Yes!
For 20.10 David Copperfield - autobiography - do memoirs count? Some memoirs from my TBR:
Growing up Amish by Ira Wagler
Testament of Youth: An Autobiographical Study of the Years 1900-1925 by Vera Brittain
Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist by Michael J. Fox
Tempting Faith: An Inside Story of Political Seduction by David Kuo
or the ubiquitous
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Thanks!
Um, I always get confused about which ones I can't get combo points for... so, can I clarify that basically, CiV and task 10.1 are not available for combo points?Any other task out of the combo points?
Kazza wrote: "Any other task out of the combo points?"10.7 Baby it's Cold Outside is only once per country.
Rebekah wrote: "The Trouble with Angels by The Trouble with Angelsand the cute one with the movie The Trouble with Angels by Jane Trahey"
whoops! the author to the first The Trouble with Angels is Debbie Macomber
Hello, I am knew to this group and as I was reviewing the Winter Challenge list, I had a question. Can you use the same book for multiple different tasks? As example, I noticed that East of Eden is one of the group reads, and the story is also set in California, my own place of birth so could I count it for both the Group Reads Challenge and the Home for the Holidays challenge?
Silver wrote: "Hello, I am knew to this group and as I was reviewing the Winter Challenge list, I had a question. Can you use the same book for multiple different tasks? As example, I noticed that East of Ede..."
You can use the book only for one task, BUT, we have what we call "combo" style points for just this situation. You use the book for whichever task you wish, and then for every other task that you could have used it for, you get an additional 5 points. A book can earn as many combo points as you can find tasks to fit, but you need to list them when you post your claim.

Ok thanks a lot
By the way, I think East of Eden, also qualifies for 20.10, as it was originally published in 1952, 20.7 as Steinbeck is a US author, and 20.4 because it is a historical novel.
I have one more question, I just want to clarify becasue I was uncertain about it. Can you read more than one book per task?
Silver wrote: "I have one more question, I just want to clarify becasue I was uncertain about it. Can you read more than one book per task?"You can repeat most of the tasks as many times as you like. The exceptions are 10.1 - Square Peg which can only be completed once and 20.7 - Baby it's cold outside which can only be claimed for task points seven times (once for each country).

Ok thanks

Memoirs are a subset of autobiographies so you don't need to make a distinction for 20.5.

Hello, my friend! Glad to see you here! This is my second challenge season with this group and everyone is super nice and helpful! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Hi,I am new to this group and wanted to ask about the Style Category "Lost in Translation"...my mother tongue is German, but I read mostly English books (if the original is English). Do I count those points for English books then, or not?
greetings, Phoebe
You would count books as translated from their original. So books written in English and read in in English wouldn't count, but would count if you read them in German (or some other language). And lucky you, that you can read in more than one language!
Ah! Okay, thanks! I got it. :)And, just to be sure...the publication date is the date of the first publication?
Liz M wrote: "Deedee wrote: "For 20.10 David Copperfield - autobiography - do memoirs count?..."itpdx wrote: "Something that I have been struggling with--what is distinction between memoir and autobiography? ..."
yeah!
Phoebe wrote: "Ah! Okay, thanks! I got it. :)And, just to be sure...the publication date is the date of the first publication?"
Yes. Use the original publication date.
And --- Welcome to the group!!
I am reading First You Shave Your Head and wondered if it would count as autobiography for 20.5. (I cannot see a thread for that task.) It is a true description of a physical and spiritual journey that she made, but it is not the story of her whole life. Would it count as a memoir?
With this in the description: lighthearted collection of Buddhist practices and principles that won't fail to inspire and amuse, it doesn't sound like enough of a memoir to qualify. It certainly could be used for 10.5 Under-rated, though, and as it takes place mostly in Korea, could be used for 10.8 as well.
I was wondering if I could claim points for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - haven't decided exactly which task yet but... it seems to be short...I read it on my Kobo of which copy I d/l from gutenberg. The most popular edition on GR (ie. highest number of rating) has 144 pages.
So, I just want to make sure before I go ahead...?

Yes, you can use Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I read it last challenge and claimed points for it. :-)
Thanks, Krista!!oh, um, I'm using it for Task 20.1 - does the "Oldies" point still applicable for this task?
Kazza wrote: "Thanks, Krista!!oh, um, I'm using it for Task 20.1 - does the "Oldies" point still applicable for this task?"
yes! Freebie points!

Woo Hoo!!
I don't see a specific thread for 20.5. Would The Prince of the Marshes: And Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq by Rory Stewart be considered a memoir? It is Stewart's account of his time in Iraq.
itpdx wrote: "I don't see a specific thread for 20.5. Would The Prince of the Marshes: And Other Occupational Hazards of a Year in Iraq by Rory Stewart be considered a memoir? It is..."My library catalogs it in general non-fiction, with a call number starting with: 956 - General history of Asia Middle East.
But it should work for 10.5 underrated (currently it has 629 ratings).
For 20.1Some of Dickens' contemporaries are:
•Louisa May Alcott
•Edward Bulwer-Lytton
•Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle
•Wilkie Collins
•George Eliot
•Ralph Waldo Emerson
•Thomas Hardy
•Leigh Hunt
•Henry James
•Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
•William T. Sherman
•William Makepeace Thackeray
•Leo Tolstoy
•Anthony Trollope
•Mark Twain

Surprisingly Elizabeth Gaskell is not on the above list since he co0authored a book with her. He often did serial short stories with several authors contributing. Wilkie Collins almost always appears in any of these collections. Maybe because he was Dickens' son-in-law. One example is Somebody's LuggageAlso
Alfred Lord Tennyson
Harriet Beecher Stowe
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Henry David Thoreau
James Fenimore Cooper
Charlotte Bronte
Emily Bronte
Anne Bronte
Jules Verne
Also Lewis Carroll
Ivan Turgenev
Honore de Balzac
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Edgar Allen Poe
Gustave Flaubert
Booker T. Washington
Frederick Douglass
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Robert Browning
William Wordsworth
Mary Russell Mitford
Sorry, I know I'm obsessing!
Soren wrote: "I've read a 1st of 3 in a fantasy series. Can i read the 2nd and get points for it?"If the second book of the series fits any of the tasks, yes you can claim points for reading it.
Does anyone see a reason that Case Histories would NOT work as a square peg? I haven't read it yet, so I'm mostly guessing based on summaries, reviews and an episode of the Masterpiece production. I'm hoping someone has read it and let me know if I'm missing something.
British author, pub 2004 (No 10.7 or 20.10). It looks like it takes place mostly in Edinburg (No 10.8 or 20.2). The main character is a PI, so no 20.6. I think it takes place in early 2000's, but since its about "cold cases" there may be some flashbacks? Can anyone rule it in or out of 20. 4 Christmas Carol?

And, although it's the first in a series, she's written less than 11 books, so no 10.9!I think you've found a winner. Jason Brodie is a dear, hope you like this!
Need clarification on a book and whether it will fit into the Square Peg task. I'm reading The Strain by Guillermo del Toro. It was published in 2009, the author is from Mexico, there's no "saintly" word in the title. Will it fit or am I missing something?
Tobey wrote: "Need clarification on a book and whether it will fit into the Square Peg task. I'm reading The Strain by Guillermo del Toro. It was published in 2009, the author is..."Although first in a series, only 6 published works. I think you've found your Square Peg!

I don't know if this helps, but I have a book that starts a series I've been wanting to read for awhile. I'm going to wait until toward the end of the challenge to read it, hoping that others will fit into the next challenge.

Thanks! It's an Anthony Trollope series, so they should fit in 20.1, but I'm not sure I want to do that. We'll see.....
Do collections of short stories count? For example I recently read Wizards: Magical Tales From the Masters of Modern Fantasy which fits for 10.5 as it has only been rated 473 times, am I allowed to use it?
Yes, you can use short story collections. Any book that is 100 pages or longer and that qualifies for a task can be used, so most non-fiction could be used also. Some tasks have additional requirements/limitations. For instance, 10.3 must take place entirely in one location. Or 20.7 has limitations on the number of times it can be used. If you're unsure, just ask.
Question on scoring - I have a book that fulfills a both a 20 and 10 pt task. I've used the 20 task already. Can I repeat it to maximize points rather than make it a combo?
Example: Task 20.10 has been completed by previous book.
New Book
+20 Task (20.10), +5 Combo (10.5) Total 25
-or-
+10 Task (10.5), +5 Combo (20.10) Total 15

So would Santa count as in Santa Claus?"
The santa in Santa Evita is Spanis..."
The word 'angel' needs be be in the title. I see that some of the books by Mignon F. Ballard fit that requirement. Simply having an angel as a character in the book doesn't qualify the book for this task.
As far as 'Santa' goes -- I was going to disallow it, but what the heck. Happy Holidays! I'll add Santa to the list of acceptable title words.
