The first think I come up with would be Nordic names... That's where you get Beowulf ect...

Above is a site with some cool ones. You can check out the different nordic places for different names.

Any ideas?

There are lots of name generators out there:

For those who write in Scrivner, I've just discovered it has a random name generator. (Edit, writing tools, names generator)

I like Peterson and Hunt thanks so much!

The scrivener name generator is awesome. You can totally mess with the settings and get names from all kinds of different backgrounds and even set the letter that the first and last names should start with.
I generally come up with my own character names for MCs, but when I need a good secondary character name the name generator saves my bacon. :-)

Also, for help with last names and sometimes first names I use this latin translator to translate words that describe the character into latin that works well for names.

If you're looking for a more average last name, you can look on a top 100 last names site. These are normally collected from censuses, so they'll give you a good supply of your everyday last names. These can also be found by searching for "most common surnames" etc.

If you still can't find what you need, looking on your average baby naming website is as good an option as any. Some even give you meanings for the names, which helps in choosing the perfect match for your character.
Hope this helps,
Eve
