I think in a nutshell, yes. Individual experiences, polical and religious influences, upbringings may be one person's damage but anothers "making" (if that makes sense). Adrian's "broken home" maybe made him a tortured soul with a philosphy that baffled his teachers...which caused the boys and Veronica to love and want him. (If that makes *any* sense)
I don't think they were threatened by Adrian, I think they admired him. They probably would have hung onto his coat tails if he suceeded to great things, dining out on "I knew him from school". It makes me said that he was so selfish as that character flaw seemed all to predicatable.
