WINTER CHALLENGE TASK SUGGESTIONS
Read a book whose author has the letters w,i,n,t,e,r OR s,n,o,w in order but not necessarily next to each other
Read a book with title containing a body part (eg. hand, nail, finger, toe, etc)Read a book on the history of the city / area you are living now and then go to a meeting about the local history
(my library has organised this sort of events but I've never been so this will be a good one to do! they're usually free of charge too)
Fiona, I think I will have a really hard time with my first name, and I won't even start thinking about my last name! Middle name won't be worth thinking about because i don't have one.
I like a lot of your ideas, too, Fiona (the book you've given up on, trilogy, librarian, and heritage ones especially). I was thinking, regarding the name ones, that it would also be interesting to read a book with a character who shares one of your names.
I second Heather, I'm not real sure of the rules and regulations but this game sounds fun and challenging and I'd like to join. Anyone care to explain please?
Taken from Cynthia's Fall Challenge rules, which I am assuming will be the same for the winter challenge.1. Anyone can participate and can join in at anytime after Dec 1st and before Feb 28th.
2. Each individual can set their own goal as to how many points they think they can earn in that time and if they want to they can reward themselves.
3. Each task counts for points only once and the same book can not be used for two categories.
4. Have fun and post what your reading and your point totals...small adjustments can be made to the categories but try to stick as close to the task as possible.
Cynthia will post the actual tasks closer to December so that we can pick the books...hope this helps.
Thanks Angela! I was reading through the old threads but was confused about the categories, I didn't realize we voted on and set up categories before the actual event started. I am excited now because it's a nice way to find new favorite authors.
Fiona, we aren't all that gifted like you to write a book! But then, you didn't say a good story or anything, so I might have a chance.
Read a book with Santa or the name of any of the reindeer in the title.February is national Library Lovers month...visit your local library and either check out a book or for those who have to own buy one from their sale or make a donation.
Read a book with the words love or romance in the title.
Read a classic & read a re-telling/complimentation of the classic (ie: King Lear with A Thousand Acres or Jane Eyre with Wild Saragossa Sea or a Henry James novel with The Master or Pride and Prejudice with Bridget Jones' Diary)
By my count we're up to 96 challenge ideas (including leftovers from the last challenge)...you guys are great...keep the ideas coming!!!!!!We could use some more character based challenges.
For example read a book with a character who is deaf or blind.
How bout these:Read a book about a problem we face as a nation, etc. and start a thread on TNBBC about how to solve it - 25 pts. I think at least!
Read a book such as The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them that will inspire you to change the world (or your piece of it) for the better
Read a book where the main character is a orphan.Read a book where the main character has some type of disability
Read a book where the main character is an animal
Read a book where the main character has the same profession as you
Read a book where the main character is bipolar.
For Valentine's Day, a book with a love story in the titleFor inauguration day, an autobiography of a president
Pick the first 10 books in your TBR list, put the titles on a piece of paper for each one, and pick one out of a basket, and read it.
Pick your least favorite book on your read list and ask someone else to read it (just because one person doesn't like it, doesn't mean you won't. Look at me. I couldn't even get 1/3 of the way through Something Wicked This Way Comes, and there are people who swear it is a great book.)
For Valentine's Day, a book with heart in the title
For inauguration day, read a story with some form of America in the title
For Valentine's Day, find a recipe book with chocolate recipes, read one,and make the recipe.
For Christmas, a book about caroling
For Christmas, a non-fiction book about Jesus
Read a book about a snowman
Read a book about an angel
For Christmas, a book with Yuletide in the title
I really like all of these ideas and I hoping to participate in the Winter Challenge! For the Inauguration Day ideas, how about including reading a book about your country or about one of your country's leaders for our members who are not in the US? Okay, I could word that much better, but I know you get the idea.
Thanks Jeane! Here's another in the political theme - read a book about/by a leader from another country. I've always wanted to read more about Winston Churchhill. So maybe it's a little selfish, but it covers anyone from outside the US who may want to read about our leaders and it'll encourage us to think outside the U.S.
I like the leader of another country idea! Very few of us (if any) have read the complete works of Shakespeare, so how about "read a Shakespeare play you've never read before".
Yea, I like the Shakespeare idea too then we can watch a play (on dvd) or adaptation of it (these are available at libraries too).
Good idea, Heather! I for one need to broaden my horizons, and reading about another country's leaders is a great way to gain an appreciation for that country and its people. Really good point there.
Is it the first of December that it starts???? I am so curious about the challenge, which ideas will have been chosen.
read a book who's movie counterpart won the oscar for best adapted screenplay the year you were born
Wow Alyssa, that is an intense one. Oh, wait, I think I understand it now. lol, I thought you were saying something else. That is a good one!
Kathryn,Thanks for your last post. I thought the exact thing you did, but then when you stopped to think about it I did the same and now I understand:
Find out which movie won the Oscar for "Best Adapted Screenplay" the year you were born, then read the book it was based off of.
That's a good one, Alyssa. Is there a site where you can easily look this up?
There are so many great ideas out there! What about reading a "classic" that you haven't already read? I'm thinking 10 points?

I just want to say I like a lot of the ideas. I'd had a few, but can't seem to remember them. I'll be back, when I can!
