Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) The image to which you are referring: is it the corvid? If so, we can use it temporarily and, hopefully, we will get something book related once I send out the April newsletter to members. :D

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes the corvid. I thought it could stand in briefly, as you have said, while we look for something more appropriate. I can envisage a drawing, books and cobwebs, that sort of thing.

Do you want me to put the picture up?

:) Georgina.

message 53: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Yes. Please put the picture up.

message 54: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I have added some images to our photos page, but they rather specific in topic.

Some lovely photos. :)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I still think we need more appropriate (read: appealing to a broad range of pagans of all traditions) banners, and avatars for both the group here at Goodreads, and at Facebook. I've posted up one of my photographs so members can see the effect and hopefully be inspired to create something special for the group.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I found some cobwebs...! and uploaded a couple of bookshelf pics - one as taken and one with some de-saturation - better methinks. (No spiders were harmed during the collection of cobwebs.)

Pagan bookshelf 1

Pagan bookshelf 2

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments Free pagan avatars can be downloaded Here.

Not many specifically pagan, but there are probably many suitable ones under different headings - eg. 'Moon'.

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I've been playing a little...

I quite like this one: Pagan bookshelf 3

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Is anyone willing to take over monitoring/moderation of Facebook page?

If not, I shall have to delete it altogether.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

I think C-Cose is moderating it?

message 63: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Haven't seen any activity from C-Cose in ages and it really takes two, in case one is away.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

You are right, it does. I don't go on facebook much anymore. I closed my author page due to my own lack of interest and I only keep my private profile in order to keep in touch with distant friends. I'm o.k with deleting it. I know Nell isn't on FB at all, not sure about Aaron. How about I drop a line about this in our announcements thread?

message 65: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Cool. I may be leaving GR in the near future, depending on how the Amazon buy-out plays out, so I don't think I can maintain the FB page. Not to mention, I am heading back to college in September.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

That's fine, although we'd miss you if you did decide to leave GR! If we don't find someone to take over the FB page soon, we'll delete it.

message 67: by Aaron, Moderator (new)

Aaron Carson | 1216 comments We would definitely miss you Ancestral, and I'm not totally clear on what changes will occur from the merge with Amazon, but they reassured me that the feeds would not overwrite the cover images which I had lovingly scanned and edited for goodreads. I took that as a good omen.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

I think amazon is aware of the lack of enthusiasm about their purchase of GR. They would be mad to change anything anytime soon. I unlinked my private FB profile from GR, deleted myself from a score of GR groups (one due to an argument over opinions about the possible changes), and sulked for a while, but at the end of the day, I have friends here and it's the most amazing virtual library in the world.

I do think private companies becoming monopolies is a real issue though. I am also worried about data retrieval and the fact that this is the first time in history that private cooperations have so much personal information about individuals. This is dangerous territory in my mind. Anyone seen that old 70s movie Beware of the Blob?

(P.S excuse typos please. End of the day. Just finished feeding all the animals. Knackered. )

message 69: by Aaron, Moderator (new)

Aaron Carson | 1216 comments Oh thanks for your response Georgina. Don't worry about the typos.

Yes I get concerned about the corporate takeover business. I do think it's a backlash to all the open source type projects which have become almost a movement on the internet.

As for me, I will be here as long as this group is here, and we can basically interact, share ideas, and respectfully write about what we want.

"As for me, I will be here as long as this group is here, and we can basically interact, share ideas, and respectfully write about what we want. " That's my take too.

message 71: by Sara (new)

Sara I've been reading this thread with some interest. I don't have a Facebook account. What Gina writes very much mirrors my own feelings about all of this. I very much dislike this tendency to link everything together and know all about me. It's exacerbated by this tendency to have us sign in with either our Facebook or Twitter or Google+ accounts. I try to keep it all separate.

I do worry about the corporatization of the internet, and the establishment of profiles about each and every one of us, whether we are aware of it or not. And whether its needed or not. I could go political on this and talk about how to me it all links to the freedoms in the US that began to be curtailed with The Patriot Act, and continue to be. Another rant for another day.

I agree with what Aaron wrote--I don't plan on abandoning GoodReads yet. And I hope it stays the large free-for-all book family as it began. I like sharing ideas here, and wish I had more time to do so. LOL, and I'm woefully behind on my reviews. One of these days. . . .

message 72: by Nell (new)

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 1682 comments I didn't know about Amazon taking over GoodReads.

Things seem to be becoming very bigbrotherish. I've noticed lately that if I browse for something I need, there will inevitably be messages in my Hotmail (now Outlook...!) inbox trying to sell me the item/s I was looking at.

Happily, I don't belong to FB or twitter, and have no intention of joining.

message 73: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) I'm sorry but I forgot to post here that I deleted the Facebook page. If anyone wants to take it on, there are instructions somewhere here at Goodreads for so doing.
